I'm confused by the vandalism bit, is it complaining that there is not enough vandalism these days? Or that the vandalism you get these days isn't as good as the vandalism when Britain was great? Also makes it sound like the school only had one desk.

I'm placing that golden age above as around 1984 as opposed to my 1978. You got 20 sweets in a 10p mixture in my day, as long as they were Black Jacks or Mojos.
Also we didn't get "grounded", we got "kept in" or more often "beaten" so I think this is after the corporal punishment became frowned upon, if not illegal.
