Nothing. In the same way posting statuses about your handbag has nothing to do with breast cancer. In the same way that posting "no makeup selfies" has nothing to do with breast cancer. I want to kill all of these people with knives.

I got in trouble with friends-of-friends a couple of years ago for pointing out that the "hey laydeeez let's post cryptic statuses about our handbag colours" was pretty full of grossly sexist assumptions and also, by dint of being cryptic, could not possibly help raise awareness of any issue, aside from the issue of you all being idiots.

xxxpost it reminds me of this one meme from 2010 where everyone was changing their FB pics to that of a cartoon character. at first everyone was just doing it cuz 'hey, cartoons!', and somehow midway through it became "oh, this is about child abuse awareness!". Nothing to explain the connection, no link for us to make a donation, no underlying message with statistics, anecdotes, or anything you would expect. Just "this is about child abuse awareness!".

friend of mine who likes to act as 'mediator' on every FB thread posted a link to an article criticizing the meme, suggesting correctly that it was pointless clicktivism and that half the people didn't know what it was they were supporting, and all these people blew up at him saying "WE'RE TRYING TO MAKE PEOPLE AWARE OF CHILD ABUSE! THIS IS POSITIVE, LIKE A PHOENIX RISING FROM THE ASHES!".

So on that day, I learned child abuse was a thing. Previously I had been led to believe that it was not. I learned something that day. and for that I am grateful.
