Well, that ending was unbearably tense. I'll be needing next week's episode now. Also, that acupuncture scene, oof.

She's dead and digested.

That was super intense, very Silence of the Lambs-esque when Beverly was downstairs with the gun. Poor Will. Poor Bella. Poor Beverly.
― carl agatha, Saturday, 22 March 2014 03:17 (ten years ago) link
I can't think of a realistic scenario in which she'd get out alive.

Maybe not.

Raul Esparza did excellent work yet again as Chilton in tonight's episode. He brings just the perfect amount of "camp" to the character. I continue to get not people's qualms about him. That said, I do find him to be incredibly hot so maybe that's blinding me to any weaknesses.

personal weird theory: chilton is like the non-comedic realization of Jim Rash's Dean character in Community
anyhoo, back from crazytown:
this Chilton is better than the movie version, maybe even better than the book ever suggested, all those subtle layers of cowardice greed ambition curiosity, he's SO good, i love watching him

Beverlyyyyyy :( :( :(
the scenes with Will recovering his memories, with the strobe lights and Hannibal-melty face, were some deeply unsettling shit. Also, when Hannibal turned his head to address Will. Mads Mikkelsen can be really terrifying just making eye contact.
― Roz, Sunday, 23 March 2014 06:20 (ten years ago) link
yeah totally!

should we poll how he will cook beverly y/n
when that Fuller interview was linked above and "spoilers" were mentioned I was all "oh come on the gun doesn't shoot up through the dining room floor if she survived it's obvious no spoilers here lol" but then yeah there are proper fucking spoilers which would make that poll unfair.
― Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Sunday, 23 March 2014 12:30 (ten years ago) link
Yeah, the gun shooting up through the floor really answered what happened. But in a subtle way. This show is in some ways pretty subtle, I've been trying to get some people into it, and they complain about Hannibal not doing anything in the first episodes, and I'm like 'wait, he killed dozens of people in the background?' but they don't really catch it.

― have a nice blood (mh), Monday, 24 March 2014 14:00 (ten years ago) link
Abigail is ok, she agreed to let Hannibal cut of her ear to help with some complicated plan which will in the end help Will Graham understand himself better. Hannibal knew that Beverly would misunderstand, so he had to attack her to get rid of her gun. After the episode ended he explained everything and they all laughed and had pancakes. In next weeks episode all will be revealed, and they'll all live happily ever after. Including Jack's wife. It's a miracle!

Hettienne Park, who plays Beverly, wrote this incredibly thoughtful blog post about her character and the accusations of racism/sexism that Bryan Fuller is getting for killing off Bev: http://yellowbird66.wordpress.com/2014/03/25/racism-sexism-and-hannibal-eat-the-rude/

well THIS just doesn't sound like it has anything to do with THIS show
Don’t forget this is network television, not cable. In order to sell those advertising dollars and survive, they want to appeal to the masses of Middle America.

finally caught up with this season. i think maybe hannibal was planning a surprise welcome home party for will if he was released, and that's what beverly found?

They followed up an episode which featured the death of a regular with their most darkly funny episode yet (mostly due to Eddie Izzard, probably).

Seeing Beverly like that was xtremely distressing (>_<) I was a bit annoyed with the last act because we know from the first ep that he is not in genuine peril.

well also the show is called hannibal and they can't kill the hero of the show.
― eric banana (s.clover), Saturday, 29 March 2014 23:55 (ten years ago) link
has there been any hint of their plans post-capture-wise, if it comes to that? i think one of the hardest things for them to do would be to put hannibal in the asylum for a season, since that would go against basically their whole setup and force them to make it all ~~~psychological~~~ (plus put them pretty close to being back in the book/film territory). lesser shows in that circumstance basically just break the baddie out as soon as possible.
― j., Saturday, 29 March 2014 23:58 (ten years ago) link
Why do you definitively know this ain't the last series?
― xelab, Sunday, 30 March 2014 00:45 (ten years ago) link
because that would be disappointing and tv can't be disappointing
― j., Sunday, 30 March 2014 01:02 (ten years ago) link
I hope I am wrong but I think this will get pumped for the likes of Believe to survive, that is depressing.
― xelab, Sunday, 30 March 2014 01:18 (ten years ago) link
I hope NBC will keep this around for prestige purposes (it's quite critically acclaimed now, I think), like how Geffen kept Sonic Youth signed despite them not selling shit compared to their label peers. Hannibal is the Sonic Youth of network TV.

Apparently the Euro co-financing helps it out, too.

― Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Sunday, 30 March 2014 03:45 (ten years ago) link
.. Hannibal would have been a goner last year - but it was saved because its almost entirely paid for by its international co-production status, with NBC having very little financial risk (if any) involved. That, capped off by the glowing reviews, could (and hopefully will) once more bring Dr. Lecter back. If NBC does cancel it, there's also hope that another outlet picks it up, which was in the cards last year when the show was in the same precarious situation.
― xelab, Sunday, 30 March 2014 17:18 (ten years ago) link
I'm not so hot on this season so far. It's insanely beautiful and the score is amazing, but I'm less and less involved in the narrative. The turn with Will this week was dispiriting.
― Simon H., Sunday, 30 March 2014 17:32 (ten years ago) link
I'm way more into the show this season, now that they've put the overarching plot at the forefront and put the serial killer of the week stuff as support.
― Herbie Handcock (Murgatroid), Sunday, 30 March 2014 17:39 (ten years ago) link
so this season the arc is going to be hints about who killed beverly?
don't like how they've kept this chesapeake ripper thing going so long and we still have no idea who it is -- hope the series doesn't founder because the audience gets tired of not knowing.
― eric banana (s.clover), Sunday, 30 March 2014 17:53 (ten years ago) link
uh the chesapeake ripper is hannibal
― Clay, Sunday, 30 March 2014 17:57 (ten years ago) link
they already suggested will is the ripper, and now they seem to be saying maybe he isn't. pulling the same twist twice with hannibal seems like it would be lazy writing imho
