I never did the chat/IM thing (b/c I Am Old) until I got skype, which I did because it's an easy way to make free telephone calls (even internationally, which I bet your CELL PHONE does not). And a friend of mine is videophoning in the other room on skype right now, and that's nice sometimes.

All these programs are heading the same way, I think. It's just that they aren't linking up.

yeah but don't you have to have microphones and webcams and whatnot for skype?

this reminds me of a hilarious story about when my exboyfriend got my number mixed up with his roommate's in London and called me absolutely trashed EVERY SINGLE DAY thinking I was Ian for like, um, three months.

my cellphone is an international jetset no star, baby! i was able to call my mum when i was in ny. only the battery was nearly flat so i had to hang up. rofl

but yeah aim i love more than skype. i feel such a weirdo talking in front of my comp. :-(

You don't need a webcam at all for skype (and in fact, they still only support the video function on windows). A headset (I use a little bluetooth one they gave me for "free" when I bought my cell) comes in handy, but pretty much every computer comes with a built-in mic and speakers, nowadays don't they?

My cell travels, too, Nathalie, but Cingular wants me to pay, like, $5/minute to call Russia (or be called while I am here). Skype is 2 cents!

My one friend who is really career-oriented and into networking LOVES skype but errrk talking to people over the phone is always so awkward for me. Give me text to read any day. :/

i can't do this wtf. i try to log in with the downloaded aim program, and it just doesn't connect (i am having this same problem with bittorrent, too, so it must be a settings issue. i just wish i knew what to change). with aim express, i added myself to my buddy list and tried to invite to buddy chat in the chatz room, but it doesn't work. :(

grady sent me an invite and i accepted and sent him a message in reply, but then nothing. maybe it's an issue with windows vista? i just "accepted" a message from grady but then nothing happened. this is annoying. i wish i knew more about computers.
