I used to have this one basketball VCR game but it was shitty because unless you picked a random point to start the VHS tape (thus delaying the start of the game), every game always started the same! DVDs kinda brought back this type of thing since it's easier to jump around (ie, SceneIt etc).

and then our friends growing up had us playing a horse race betting game, thus exposing me to gambling at a nice right age.

also did anybody ever play the interactive CAptain Power game shit?

not quite sure what the exemplars were of the genre that the textbook plot was based on, but the musical cues were perfect.

I don't know that it was meant to be anything more than 'hey it's organized crime/drug cartel shit only with textbooks instead'.

nah i'm struggling to think of other examples than a simple plan but basically the plot involves small group of friends find some loot that's possibly ill gotten, decide to split it up amongst themselves instead of report it or whatever and then eventually greed and paranoia lead them to betray and destroy each other until whatever larger powerful evil force the loot originally belonged to arrives to deliver the final blow. no country for old men has elements of this, treasure of sierra madre as well but there are some that fit it more specifically. basically a variation on monkey's paw.

Not sure if mentioned here but VCR star was the dude who created breaking bad hence drug deal subplot

Most inexplicable comparison between two things I have heard all year.

I'm not really sure why I felt that (probably just the sci-fi association from last week) but something definitely sent a Chris Barrie -shaped shiver down my back. Something about the lameness and intransigence of the characters and being in a confined situation. But it passed pretty quickly.

Jeez why are some people so unnecessarily defensive of this show? I'm not knocking it at all, I was (I thought) clearly trolling when I compared it unfavourably with a Sunday morning Disney cartoon (albeit a very good one). Regardless, the similarities are more than incidental.

wtf? I mean I maintain a pretty loose definition of what trolling is "Being facetious/tongue in cheek" would probably have illustrated that better, but I missed the part where trolling was defined as some kind of internet lifestyle choice that demands dedication and commitment.

Oh please, could you be more precious? If trolling is something that requires any amount of effort then the chances are I probably wasn't. It was a quaint observation that occurred to me because Recess had an episode called "The Ratings Game" that played out in a very similar fashion to "App Development and Condiments".

It is peculiar that two big dude showrunners have cameo'd recently but considering their bits were great and unrelated to their day jobs I can't see holding it against the show.

Harmon's appearance in Arrested Development was obviously symbolising his being cast out from the NBC and Sony families, as he was in the desert. And further, representing the Harmontown documentary, as it showed him having found an ersatz support group/cult that would pay to be abused, and give him a place to do pointless "work".

Yeah, I probably shouldn't have taken that so literally. And I guess I'd figured the comparison might not mean all that much to most. Recess first aired in 97 when I was 6 and ilx generally trends a fair bit older than that.

didn't think this was great. honestly should've been a 2-parter it all felt so rushed and felt like half of it was missing anyway, didn't really do anything for hickey's character. felt sorta halfassed tbh.
