Know why I love this movie? Because it's so unassailably, unabashedly weird. It's nearly peerless in demeanor, tho Buckaroo Banzai sits at the same lunch table... And if it doesn't get auteured to death, Anderson's Inherent Vice adapt might sidle up shortly some year.

yeah Buckaroo Banzai, another fitfully amusing '80s "nice try" at eccentricity.

Ha ha, this falls right in line with my long-held theory that '70s punks (and the critics who championed the CBGB scene) were a bunch of art school shits who looked down their noses at those knuckle-dragging hardcore kids coming on the scene behind them.

Do I try to catch repo man in 35mm or do I finally watch the Blu-ray which I haven't opened yet
I can only do one or the other
One option saves $14 and I won't have to feel embarrassed for everybody who laughs in the wrong places or fails to laugh in the right ones

It's up to you--there's still plenty to savor on the blu after the screening. I saw it projected as a midnight show a few years back (and wrote about it somewhere upthread iirc) with a tiny audience--no more than 15 people--who seemed to get it.

Third Film:Acoustic installment announced with Neko Case and Repo Man
Film:Acoustic, the series of film screenings paired with talks by musicians, returns to Durham's Carolina Theatre again next month for a presentation of cult hit Repo Man, with Neko Case discussing the film. Case was last in town back in the fall for a sold-out gig at the Cradle with The New Pornographers.
The goal of Film:Acoustic is to present films that inspire particular artists, along with a discussion with the artist about what the film means to them. Joining Case will be Michael Nesmith, who was an executive producer of Repo Man. Yes, he was also once in the 1960s pop outfit The Monkees.
The series debuted in December with The Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne discussing the 1974 film The Night Porter. This month's installment is this Monday with Americana star Lucinda Williams and the 1979 adaptation of Flannery O'Connor's Wise Blood. Tickets to Monday's program are still available, and tickets for Case and Repo Man are on sale now. And while Coyne didn't play any music at his program, Williams is expected to play a few tunes—no word yet on which way Case will go.

i keep trying to think of films that have the same odd tone and same kinda nonsensical story with a a handful of narrative dead ends and unexplained relationships that still succeed as well, but i can't.
― nomar, Tuesday, 20 September 2016 17:02 (seven years ago) link
That comment makes me think of Computer Chess, which certainly isn't close to as successful as Repo Man but is maybe in that same universe

Yeah that's a good suggestion. Obviously a little sillier and more blatantly sci-fi but it has a weird deadpan tone and Rasta aliens.
