Andrew Rose Gregory @arosegregory 49m
@arthur_affect so how long did it take judges to rule on mcdormond/mcdormand? Now that months have passed, do you agree with their ruling?
Arthur Chu @arthur_affect 34m
@arosegregory It took like ten nerve racking minutes. Now that months have passed, I still want the ten grand

OK, good to know. I thought Trebek was going rogue.

i was hella tickled when he straight up gave the wrong answer on the macbeth clue but cloaked it in such a way that it seemed as if alex really was gonna look like a massive dick if he wouldn't accept "what is 'the scottish play'/'macbeth'; it's bad luck to say it"
― PSY talks The Nut Job (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 12 March 2014 04:32 (ten years ago) link
But not allowing "Gerry" with a soft "g," that was total bullshit
they did allow it! alex got snarky about it but gave him the points.
― fact checking cuz, Wednesday, 12 March 2014 05:01 (ten years ago) link
Chu never does well on the music questions.
he -- and both challengers -- completely whiffed on the album covers category today. i hope there's an album covers category and lots of j.d. souther questions when and if i ever get on jeopardy.
― fact checking cuz, Wednesday, 12 March 2014 05:03 (ten years ago) link
looked a little rattled by the end, as he didn't bet to tie, but safely way above
i don't think he ever bets to tie when he's got the game locked, does he? iirc, he only bets to tie when the game is still on the line.
― fact checking cuz, Wednesday, 12 March 2014 05:06 (ten years ago) link
album covers were the only ones i knew today ha
― Spottie, Wednesday, 12 March 2014 05:12 (ten years ago) link
xp not sure, but then i didn't see games where he was this far ahead of the second place contestant
yeah i was like omg c'mon that's Wish You Were Here mannnnnnnn

Ah, ok, I missed that. I was too wrapped up in their little spat.

The other day I was in Milwaukee eating breakfast at a place with an early edition of Trivial Pursuit questions on the table. I had my daughter quiz me, and man, by shifting the time frame 30 years or so what might have once been challenging trivia had turned into utterly impossible esoteric shit totally devoid of any contemporary cultural or practical relevance. Made me wonder what a hilarious clusterfuck it would be to host a "1984 Trivial Pursuit" night, with all the questions being about flying cowboys, outmoded facts and random athletes who were past their prime in the '80s.
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 12 March 2014 14:01 (ten years ago) link
there's any number of pointless things I know about that era solely because of trivial pursuit
― PSY talks The Nut Job (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 12 March 2014 14:34 (ten years ago) link
But see, the 1984 edition isn't about 1984. It's just random trivia that was maybe relevant back in 1984, or maybe semi-obscure in 1984, but has since fallen deep, deep, deep into the dustbin. There's not anyone in 2014 who would get questions about Kirby Grant, star of Sky King, the Flying Cowboy, a forgotten radio show from the '40s.
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 12 March 2014 14:40 (ten years ago) link
The entertainment questions from early 80's Trivial Pursuit games are insanely hard for people under 40 or so. My dad cleans up on them.

Trust me, ALL the questions from that edition would be hard for someone under 60, at least. I mean, I'm 39, which is pretty close to 40, and most of the questions were totally bonkers obscure. There's a reason they update the sets.

She was good, he threw out some really bad/lazy answers, and he only got 1 of 3 Daily Doubles (and lost his entire stack on it). Game theory couldn't help him today.

"got" as in found
I think yesterday's show -- which, for Arthur, preceded today's show by a few minutes -- rattled him. Trebek's dickishness threw him off his game.

Ugh, that made me think he was throwing the game on purpose, mainly because the name of the category was something like "Everything in Threes."

Although this explains a lot:http://www.cleveland.com/tipoff/index.ssf/2014/03/arthur_chu_is_beaten_on_jeopar.html
Chu said fatigue took a toll on him. What most people don't know is that Jeopardy! tapes on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. His first four wins were on a Wednesday and he went home to Broadview Heights until the following Tuesday. On that day, he won five straight games. Then returned Wednesday for more."At one point, I was kind of mad because Alex is like, 'Our champion Arthur had two weeks to rest.' No I didn't. I had NO time to rest."

Felt like Alex could have big upped the guy a little more at the end tbh. I mean that was a pretty impressive streak and he was basically just like see yea later, dude.

Trebek had to establish who was the big dog there without Sean Connery around to correct him.

On the "McDarmand" controversy:
Oh, losing $10,000 on a judgment call is infuriating and leaves a sick feeling in the pit of your stomach. I'm amazed I was able to come back from that and still win that game. What makes it worse is that Trebek didn't "shut me down" -- he initially GAVE me that Daily Double, congratulated me, everyone applauded me, etc., and then the producers shouted "CUT!" and stopped taping while they conferred with each other and then said they were taking it away from me. That's a really nerve-racking process, and it really really sucks to go "back in time" and have Alex basically undo the victory he just gave you and "rule you wrong" for the cameras. And yes, I did kind of act like a dick after that but I'd challenge all of you to ask yourselves how you'd feel if you just lost $10,000 for pronouncing a syllable wrong.

Especially with the "Peptide, . . . Peptic" answer on his last day.
― nickn, Friday, 14 March 2014 20:26 (ten years ago) link
He talked about that, too. As long as you correct yourself within the allotted time, you're ok -- it's the second answer that counts (and apparently, this has been the rule on the show from the beginning).
