Saw this last night in a mostly packed theater and I really enjoyed it, despite me not having watched much of the show (I remember watching an episode back then but it didn't do much for me).

glad to hear the movie holds appeal for a neophyte. but dude! you have to catch up on the show now!

Yeah, I could see how the shuffling from one character to the next could be seen as fan service but since I wasn't technically a fan before the movie, it served as a nice introduction to the world and how expansive it got by the end of the show's run.

Herbie Handcock (Murgatroid), Friday, 14 March 2014 16:45 (ten years ago) link

seeing this tonight sort of against my will. i have fond memories of v mars but every time my wife rescreens an episode it feels stupider and stupider. assuming the movie will be roughly on the level of star trek: insurrection, the standard for post-show feature-length episodes.

No spoilers intended with this post, but I'm getting the impression that most fans prefer Logan over Piz as Veronica's love interest? Because based off this movie alone, I'm mostly for Piz over Logan. Sorry everyone.

Which one is the vampire?

Can't wait for this. O/h is walking around singing 'Veronica Mars' to the tune of 'One foot in the grave'.
Stupid movie ticket says it's 68 min long but apparently it's proper movie length.

i think we're gonna watch online since i can't deal with packed movie theaters. just bought some old school popcorn maker and fancy sodas so looking forward to an at-home event!

Just saw this today in a half empty theatre. I really think they nailed it, it was everything I wanted from the movie. Feel guilty for not giving money to the Kickstarter campaign now.

This was so poor :( Feels like they tried to edit a whole season down to movie length, lost all character and distinctive dialogue, and were left with clunky exposition.

Stevie T, Saturday, 15 March 2014 13:51 (ten years ago) link

what! it was great. They had to wrap up what would be a season-long mystery into 1.5 episode-length so ... the end was a bit rushed. But otherwise I thought they got the pacing and playing to the fans about right. <3
(also multiple Freaks & Geeks actors, yay)

poor piz :(

my screening was totally full (with some younger kids, too) but it's showing like 6 times in total in a handful of theatres in the UK. It was a really good atmosphere!

kinder, Saturday, 15 March 2014 22:10 (ten years ago) link

also I'm pretty sure there is a Mitchell & Webb reference in there (for UK viewers)

is the plot "who killed mark richardson"

linda cardellini (zachlyon), Saturday, 15 March 2014 22:33 (ten years ago) link

the mystery was pretty weak, but the dialogue, especially the essential back-and-forth between veronica + her dad and veronica + logan was exactly what I wanted to see. the theater I saw loved it, but it was a fan screening so unless it was a total bomb they would go nuts. but I didn't hear anyone complaining. also oh pizpaws delivered on a great aspect of the original show, where someone lowers the boom on veronica about her terrible behavior and leaves her speechless.

i've read the "it's a whole season condensed down to 2 episodes" criticism in a number of reviews. first, if that were *really* true, then there would have been 22 little cases interspersed among the big murder case, each one getting solved in 3-4 minutes. second, not sure how an abbreviated mystery arc could have been avoided unless the movie didn't have a mystery plot at all, which would have been pretty weird.

i'm sure the studio rights among a million other things make it impossible but would love if netflix or showtime or a very desperate nbc would do a wheel show w/ a rebooted veronica mars and terriers and something else, just slot them into this -

entirely satisfying little movie.

akm, Sunday, 16 March 2014 17:13 (ten years ago) link

This was just ok, but I'm really happy it got made - seems like a better closure for the characters than the end of season 3.

Kirsten Bell and Jason Dohring still have crazy chemistry, but I thought the Logan+Veronica dialogue seemed to have lost a bit of spark. Then again I always liked them most when they were fighting. Felt bad for Piz.

Roz, Monday, 17 March 2014 04:53 (ten years ago) link

I loved seasons 1 and 2 but skipped 3 after it got slammed here so hard. Should I watch any of it before watching the movie?

Corporal Clegg, you've got a lovely daughter (WilliamC), Monday, 17 March 2014 12:50 (ten years ago) link

haven't seen the movie but at the very least you'll need to know who piz is and there's some stuff at the very end that might (probably should) come up in the movie. maybe start w/ episode 10? the main problem w/ season 3 is the overarching mysteries (there were two - no season long arc) were really lame, you could maybe even skip ahead to the last five episodes, after any running mysteries are done, but you'd miss some stuff that happens. season 3 is definitely the weakest but most of that is usual high school show adjusting to college (i can't think of any show that's made that transition w/ grace) and somewhat desperate attempts and compromises to keep it on the air. i don't think it's actually really bad, it's just nowhere near the first two seasons.

balls, Monday, 17 March 2014 13:01 (ten years ago) link

i just finished watching s3 and really struggled getting through it, i didn't care for either of the multi-ep mysteries but i missed their guiding structure during the last "arcless" episodes. i had never seen the series finale before and it just feels like a mess, they threw a bunch of stuff at the wall to set up a future that didn't end up existing. very bittersweet.

however it was still an opportunity to inhabit the world w/characters i loved so i'm glad i watched it. as for the movie, i think they managed to recap enough of S3 in the beginning of the movie and then organically throughout that you'll be fine.

I am now into S2 and hi my name's VGrrl and I love Veronica Mars

All my previous 'meh' is now gone after binge-watching S1. Once the bigger storylines ramped up and she stopped having to look for ppl's stolen bicycles etc all the goddamn time, it got way better. I'm still trying to figure out how they made me turn a corner from hating Logan on site to squeeing like a fangirl when they finally hooked up.

Now I'm onto hating Duncan, like a constant obsessive hatred. Like every episode I want him to be murdered horribly or drown in a bathtub or eaten by wild animals. He's such a turnip.

I think they stopped having Logan organizing hobo fights for starters.
