I was more disappointed by the explosives-in-the-hangar reveal: c'mon, if it wasn't the Real Killer trying to frame Terrence then surely it was Lamb? It's still too early for such a smoking gun, so to speak.

I thought this episode was fine, a good looking up after a rough patch. I've felt the same way as Alex, about the loss of momentum, but I think it's just in the mysteries of the week, and the terrible WHAT ABOUT THE BABY? subplot, which is thankfully (hopefully) finished. The bus crash & Logan stuff are still working for me.

WitchBaby (witchy), Thursday, 16 March 2006 16:13 (eighteen years ago) link

The supporting cast keeps changing too much.

I love this though: it feels true to Veronica's character (she's too cynical and wounded to ever assemble a true Scooby Gang), and to the necessities of detective work in a smallish community. And a lot of these characters are stronger for only being onscreen long enough to deliver a joke or a clue--if there was ever a "Dick Episode" his assholism would lose its charm, or it'd turn mawkish.

WitchBaby (witchy), Thursday, 16 March 2006 16:24 (eighteen years ago) link

I missed most of the first season of this, but liked it when I saw it; every time I've tried to watch it lately I'm just annoyed and irritated. it certainly acts like it thinks it's good, but it just isn't.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 16 March 2006 18:24 (eighteen years ago) link

Come on Kyle, open your heart. Skeezy teen TV with pretensions is a gift to be thankful for. The ghosts of Dawson's Creek demand their tribute.

UPN fucked up with all the scheduling gaps. Off for a month, one episode, off for another month, etc. I have difficulty caring right now.

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Thursday, 16 March 2006 20:33 (eighteen years ago) link

Is it just me or are they fairly nonchalant toward some peoples' misdeeds? Like the cheerleader/lesbian in this episode - you bust the mugger, but the girl who blackmails and outs her girlfriend just gets an 'oh well, such is life'? Seems like crappy writing.

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Friday, 17 March 2006 02:48 (eighteen years ago) link

I think it's been established before that Veronica really doesn't care too much about exposing people that she has any sympathy towards - she seemed to approve of Mac blackmailing all the rich kids for their purity test scores (though that whole plot was ridiculous).

This episode was pretty meh. Lamb is still a fantastic character, and I liked the "Rick Santorum" thing, but the whole thing wasn't terribly intriguing or funny.

clotpoll (Clotpoll), Friday, 17 March 2006 03:37 (eighteen years ago) link

That was the longest "Previously On..." that I've ever seen.

The Yellow Kid, Friday, 24 March 2006 19:32 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm kinda sick of this show at this point.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 24 March 2006 19:39 (eighteen years ago) link

Everything was OK, except the mystery of the week sucked.

I wonder if watching the first season on DVD, one after the other, colored my view of it - the writing was tighter and more cohesive, not too many characters got in the way. This year the mysteries have been boring, too many b-plots get in the way (girlfriend in a coma, etc.) and not enough screen time for Wallace.

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Friday, 24 March 2006 19:41 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, this season hasn't been as good as the first. And you're 100% correct that there's not been enough Wallace - that guy's fantastic.

That said, I thought last night's episode was the best one in a real long time. All of the various subplots got an interesting scene or two, the plot-of-the-week had some twists (even if it wasn't all that interesting), and look at all the characters who showed up. Cordelia, Harry Hamlin, the lawyer guy, Vinny Van Lowe.

The Yellow Kid, Friday, 24 March 2006 20:27 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, this week's was the first cohesive episode in a long time. Not a great episode, it just felt more up to the lower end of the standard of last season.

i am trying very hard not to read all of this; try with me.

tom west (thomp), Saturday, 25 March 2006 16:54 (eighteen years ago) link

(episode 21 could well be great, though.)

i actually really liked the twelve angry men episode. just me?

season two doesn't seem so bad until i remember that the first season had the poker game / party stabbing / echolls suicide where this had the limp, limp 'donut run' deal and all the slightly inconclusive feeling stuff leading out of it. it's still, uh, 'highly watchable'. but if in season 3 they really go with having veronica go to college in her hometown (most hatable american tv readymade of them all) i very much doubt i will be able to carry on.

tom west (thomp), Saturday, 25 March 2006 17:00 (eighteen years ago) link

The 12 Angry Men episode had that woman who taught at the college and wanted to put a good word in for Veronica because she was exactly the type of person she wanted there, or something, so I'm worried it's going to go that way. It'll be like when the tiny town of Sunnydale suddenly turned out to have a University.

I'm still enjoying this, and the guessing game of how everything's going to be resolved, although I'm guessing that the guessing will turn out to be more fun than the real ending. And I'm still worried that it's all going to be down to the secret society (and that the sheriff is a member and has framed the baseball bloke). The secret society even had a cameo the episode after I had the thought, apparently just to remind the audience that they still existed (speaking of which, continuity weirdness? Last year they were ultra secret and Veronica had never noticed the school's logo had a trident, etc, this year they streak at the school fayre and Veronica's going "oh those wacky secret society types, it just wouldn't be the school fayre if they didn't run through it naked every year").

Cressida Breem (neruokruokruokne?), Saturday, 25 March 2006 17:39 (eighteen years ago) link

Apologies up front for being a petulant dork, but Sunnydale was always modeled fairly closely on Santa Barbara, which has a UC. And there were storylines in the high school seasons which involved college students. Remember the big phallic frat-snake-monster thing? I agree Veronica should get the hell out of Neptune, though.

So where is Neptune, precisely? Between LA and San Diego, in "Balboa County" ie Orange County? Last season Keith was a big Padres fan, now it seems there's another mysterious MLB club somewhere in the vicinity. And do OC'ers really go to San Diego more than LA, which the kids in this show seem to do? Did they shut Camp Pendleton down, turn it into a beach community?

Who is Troy, the ex-boyfriend she's supposed to be saving tonight? I don't remember him at all.

Big Willy and the Twins (miloaukerman), Thursday, 30 March 2006 00:24 (eighteen years ago) link

she dated Troy briefly in the first season, only to discover that he's been two-timing her the whole time, trying to skip town for a drug deal. (which Veronica thwarts, natch.) he was in maybe episodes 2-5 of the first season.

horsehoe (horseshoe), Thursday, 30 March 2006 01:43 (eighteen years ago) link

I recognized him once the episode started but I couldn't figure out if he was the dim-bulb cop beforehand.

Big Willy and the Twins (miloaukerman), Thursday, 30 March 2006 02:37 (eighteen years ago) link

best episode of the season. The shot where the camera follows as she walks past generic frat boy, turns around and stun-guns him was maybe the high point of the entire series.

OK-good ep (the ones yous are talking abt)

seeing the arrested development guys was funny (thought george michael was gonna turn out to be the rapist, for a sec!!)

I really love the lawyer guy

this is still fun

have last nights but not seen yet

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 6 April 2006 21:53 (eighteen years ago) link

They could have led up to Veronica's haunting a little, right? Or at least make it feel like the episode fits into some kind of timeline of recent episodes, rather than just a reminder that there's a big mystery to solve in the end (which will involve Steve Guttenberg, for he has no other reason to exist).

Big Willy and the Twins (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 03:00 (eighteen years ago) link

some surprising quality in the last two episodes! something about this show and edgy, snarky one-liners, let me tell ya

although i may have been blinded two weeks ago by michael cera - i mean, he wasn't even all that good, but, like, michael cera!

lemin (lemin), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 03:16 (eighteen years ago) link

so, by last two episodes i meant the one last week and the week before, as the time slot change completely passed me by

lemin (lemin), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 03:21 (eighteen years ago) link

I found tonight's episode really pretty to look at, but so breakneck-paced as to be near-incomprehensible. who in the what now? are we supposed to think Weevil's responsible for the crash? please.

it was still very funny, though.

horsehoe (horseshoe), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 03:45 (eighteen years ago) link

I liked the one. Nice to see some plot points start to come together.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 04:17 (eighteen years ago) link

Why don't they just put the titles right at the beginning, or get rid of them altogether? 10 minutes in is just distracting.

Cressida Breem (neruokruokruokne?), Thursday, 20 April 2006 01:48 (eighteen years ago) link

12 minutes in even more so.

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 20 April 2006 02:08 (eighteen years ago) link

They're on a roll now. Why couldn't the first half have been this good? If it's just the need to stretch out a plotline, make two big mysteries or something.

Big Willy and the Twins (miloaukerman), Thursday, 20 April 2006 03:52 (eighteen years ago) link

Duncan should have been on the bus.

maybe he was

tom west (thomp), Thursday, 20 April 2006 19:07 (eighteen years ago) link

it was strange to have a kind of nothing episode (ep 17 (I can't even remember what it was supposed to be (looking: OK, not nothing but barely a mention of the bus crash (I know it's all involved) that is HAUNTING her in the following two episodes))) and then these two, much faster ones

they were just cycling through all poss baddies (w/ the weevil and w/ the gay radio kid and the pwt sister/family etcs)

despite the varying pace, ep to ep, it seems to be managing to juggle quite a few threads OK

the kendall casablancas revelation is a bit of a weird one. makes you wonder why she was hanging around w/ logan and desperate w/ duncan and stuff, when she has the fitzpatricks behind her, etc

I'm still enjoying it

wonder what happens when they graduate

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 20 April 2006 19:53 (eighteen years ago) link

that was awesome. I was seriously grinding my teeth with anxiety the whole time. Harry Hamlin=creepiest motherfucker ever.

horsehoe (horseshoe), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 01:18 (eighteen years ago) link

Why did Woody take a runner? Ooooh, an .mp3 of two people saying Woody touched them, that'll hold up in court! And why did the Indian casino owner just now decide to spring the crooked player?

They waited too long to wrap up too many loose ends, some things read like major deus ex machinae. Unless the season finale is like four hours long or something and then it's all good.

Did I just overestimate how close Wallace and Veronica are - what's with the "I'll miss you" speech in the hall?

milo z (mlp), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 02:33 (eighteen years ago) link

do you mean why weren't Wallace and Veronica more demonstrative during that scene, or why did he say he'd miss her? if it's the latter, I think that was just referring to the fact that he assumes she's going to leave town next year for Stanford. if it's the former, then, yeah, that would have been a nice moment for a hug.

this season did fuck up the timing of the main arc, but this episode was decently suspenseful, so I'm hoping the finale will be, too.

horsehoe (horseshoe), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 02:43 (eighteen years ago) link

crooked ballplayer, I mean.

And yeah, just being more demonstrative, and then they're presumably going to see each other at graduation/parties and during the summer.

milo z (mlp), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 02:52 (eighteen years ago) link

and then they're presumably going to see each other at graduation/parties and during the summer.

aw, graduation parties. i just had a burst of nostalgia. it's true, it was a little dramatic, which might have been hedging of bets in case the show doesn't get renewed.

They never explained what the deal was with the creepy family, did they - the grandparents of Duncan's baby? They were the ones who posted bail for the nut who was going after Guttenberg, and then they offered a reward for his capture (I thought they were working together or something) - I didn't understand that plotline much.

milo z (mlp), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 02:41 (eighteen years ago) link

no, they didn't really. all we know from earlier in the season is that Meg's parents were abusive and that they had some connection with Lucky.

I sort of think that the end of the episode was Veronica's dream, from the moment Keith shows up alive until the end. it was just so bizarre.

horseshoe (horseshoe), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 02:45 (eighteen years ago) link

the episode RJG posted last about is the last one i've seen and I have to say it's the best veronica mars yet! covering my eyes.. hitting send.. thoughts to come

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 02:54 (eighteen years ago) link

Great episode.

Meg's parents hired the guy to find Woody when it became apparent that he was involved in her death. Pretty straightforward.

Just a thoroughly satisfying conclusion to a lot of plot arcs, no matter how stupid the Echolls trial happened to be.

drone/a/sore (drone/a/sore), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 04:23 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm curious how they're going to handle the high school to college transition, which has killed many a similar show.

Does this mean that Duncan's baby has the clap?

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 04:46 (eighteen years ago) link

well, I think chlamydia in the mother can cause a baby to experience infection, but that's within the first weeks of its life, so I'd say baby Lilly is in the clear.
