HANNIBAL on NBC seems amazing and therefore deserves it's own thread!

this show is very silly. watched four episodes and i am not in. tone is so odd, there are some things that are working for me and so many that are not.

Wait, what does Gillian Anderson's character know about Hannibal? I didn't revisit S1 so I've forgotten.

Very enjoyable premiere so far.

i think she… only knows what she could surmise as his therapist? but she sometimes acts like she saw accurately through his person-mask, beyond just realizing that it was one?

I ask because she was like, "You're putting me in the difficult position of lying about you", and I was like, wait, she knows? What does she know?

oh, i forget, she's aware of the inappropriateness of his patient relationships, and i think about someone she knew he was with (will?) when she was asked about it by the feds, though she kept it quiet just on general principle / concern for hannibal?

didn't hannibal save gillian anderson from a violent patient before, under peculiar circumstances? jack tried to question her about something that she wouldn't disclose last season iirc.

The Following was renewed for a third season and I'll be upset if that awful piece of shit survives and this serial killer show doesn't get a third season.

I felt pretty queasy.

Guessing Gillian had to go because of that other show she's about to be on + other commitments. Loved the ambiguity going on at the end of last season so it feels like an abrupt shift but her scene with Will was good so all is forgiven.

Gillian Anderson's scenes have been amazing these past two episodes but they didn't really advance the plot in any way except to allude to some past incident(s) and if she's gone for good, I don't even know why they bothered to bring her back this season at all. Of course, if she's not gone, she can come back to give us some closure on what she and Hannibal allude to all the time but otherwise, it was all a bit pointless (though a well-acted kind of pointlessness, I guess).

That coldopen, sweet merciful Christ. They was basically The Human Centipede minus the anal fixation but with much more convincing effects. (But no nudity, 'cause heaven forbid.)

I do like how the show is taking its time (in this case, at least three episodes) to get Will out of prison. I feel like most other shows would have freed him within the first episode of the new season.

xp my first inclination was to ask WHY did they have to show the flesh ripping -- why couldn't they just cut away and let the sound effects convey the horror? but then i had to admit it really wouldn't pack the same wallop, and seeing how much he suffered made me want him to survive the chase scene SO BADLY.

-the flesh rips on a beat where you're not expecting it! i really liked that
-will is going to be in prison all series, i sort of hope

-it wd seem a weird conclusion to draw that anderson isn't going to be back; her withdrawal seems too precisely delimited for that

--the Promotional Consideration Furnished By Apple stuff felt really intrusive

--everyone acts with their shoulders, in this show. the exact limits to will's slump, the exact set of the investigator's. hannibal a sort of curious-animal thing. fishburne in his chair talking to (an investigator? his therapist?) -- one wonders if fuller is going around going 'no, like this, see'

--one enjoys beverly katz getting to do something, instigate things; it's fun that people's roles in the action have shifted so much, as opposed to their merely interpersonal dynamics

--for a second i was worried they wouldn't bother to explain the mural's ~symbolism~ but, oh, no

--this episode had a really bad script; characters explaining the last episode and their motivations to each other, all the time: the scene with katz and the director maybe the worst, though i did like:

(while not sitting in chair) "they've even ordered a psych eval to determine my comptentency to sit in this chair"

"what do you want me to do?"

(as he sits down) "... we didn't have this conversation"

--hannibal's plastic suit is interesting: like, it now functions as sinister comedy, whereas if we'd not been built to it it would look purely ridiculous (this is the third time we've seen it, right, and the first full shot?)

--"i love your work" !!!

also i feel like it was a shame he didn't make risotto milanese with it because i felt deprived of squeamish moments involving marrow

i feel like the 'protein scramble' from ep one or two was meant to establish that he also ate food without napkins and silverware, yes

This continues to be ludicrous and ravishing in equal measures. It would have to go pretty far down the shitter for me not to continue watching for the art direction and Mikkelsen.

There was Osse Bucco in the cafeteria today. It damn near made me sick. Why do I watch this show?

This show is so abstractly pretty I had no problem eating a roast chicken dinner during the "Ooh he's making angels!" bits (ages ago for you guys prob, I live in NZ)

Was Cynthia Nixon's character aware of the judge's murder beforehand? It looked like she was surprised for a split second that the judge was hung with his heart and brain out on display and then right after went right into chastising Jack for defending Will. She must be used to that sort of display!

So has anyone noticed the sheer glee they're having in putting Hannibal Lecter's dialogue from the movies in Will's mouth this season? "You want to know how he's choosing them" (from Manhunter), "[Dr. Lecter] doesn't want me dwelling on anything morbid" (from Silence), and I noticed a third one but it's slipped my mind at the moment.

Favorite moment: Hannibal entering the courtroom to testify, shot from angles where his face is obscured by the backlight. He really looked like a demon in those shots.

Also, I have no idea who is actually comitting the gun-murders. I mean, I have a theory, as every time I've had doubts on who has killed whom, it's always been Hannibal. But I constantly think 'well, maybe there's something else going on, he seemed so sad when he discussed the case with Will...'
