Yeah, it's provisional though, so don't trust it. When I used to play over the board my rating was about 1700. But as I say that was 15-odd years ago!

Si..Carter (SiC@rter), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

You should try playing against someone who has a higher rating, then.

I tried very hard not to give you an inch in this game but I did and you grabbed it. I'm still hoping for at least a draw but we'll see.

Stevem, I apologize for tromping all over you with my queen. I don't know why you first developed that knight to a3 but don't do that again. ;-)

And watch out for that Scholar's mate. Someone did that to me not long ago on FICS and I felt like a maroon.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 01:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Having overworked myself against Si I am just playing ballistically against Sundar. I'll give him a proper challenge next time.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 01:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Play against someone with a higher rating? What, and possibly lose? But I'm trying to beat ken's winning streak :)

Actually, I don't think the ratings mean a huge amount unless you've played a lot of games - I've just beaten someone with a rating of 1660 who missed a mate in 1, but a 1200 is giving me a good game at the mo.

Si.C@rter (SiC@rter), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

btw good game that one

Si.C@rter (SiC@rter), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks, it was good. The only time my attention really flagged was after you had moved your queen, towards the end, and forked me -- I forgot that your queen had moved and that therefore you might now be able to check me in one move. Oops.

The ratings seem fairly accurate once they're past provisional. We all miss mates in one occasionally... well, many of us.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't remind me - as a teenager I lost £50 prize money in a tournament doing that. And that was a lot of dosh in 1984!

Si.C@rter (SiC@rter), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Another weird one - my opponent just resigned this game, which I'm sure is a draw?

Si.C@rter (SiC@rter), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

When I click that link I get a list of my games.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

How odd. Try this instead.

Si.C@rter (SiC@rter), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Hm. I can't see the draw immediately, but I can't tell if someone is going to be forced into some awful zugzwang situation. Could be either side.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 2 June 2005 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

My knight's stuck guarding the a-pawn, the black king can just shuffle between g8 and h8, and if I try and march my king round the two f-pawns, then my h-pawn dies. When I worked it out on the board we ended up with Q&N v Q which is a draw. I can't see a win here, but if anyone sees different...?

Si.C@rter (SiC@rter), Thursday, 2 June 2005 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I am just playing ballistically against Sundar.

And I have responded my playing even more mentally. How'd I squander a lead like that?

Sundar (sundar), Friday, 3 June 2005 00:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Is nothing sacred? How can I concentrate on my next move if the crazy frog keeps singing to me?

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Friday, 3 June 2005 07:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, gave me the shock of my life that did. Stupid advertisers. My colleague mentioned a new Firefox extension that blocks embedded ads from loading. Bring it on.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 3 June 2005 08:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh Sundar...

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 00:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll figure it out one day...

Sundar (sundar), Tuesday, 7 June 2005 01:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Ken C always beats me without me ever seeing where it's coming from. I always beat SteveM. Casuistry beat me about five times in a row, but then I beat him last time and now it's going to the wire (but I'm probably going to lose):

http://www.redhotpawn.com/core/playchess.php?gameid=1197495

Starryschessclub has disappeared mid-game.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 07:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I finally beat Casuistry, making it 9-1 or something.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 09:07 (twenty-one years ago)

i've just lost again! (although it's to pwn66 who seems to be a pro!)

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 13:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, everyone but Sundar beat me the other week (and he really should have). I'm a little stressed out these days. But I move next Monday and after that I will probably be ready to provide a half-toothed challenge again.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Where is Starry?!

Sundar (sundar), Saturday, 18 June 2005 00:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know.

I'm not playing any games on RHP right now! They all ended. I've been playing on FICS, though, and having a pretty good day of it.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 18 June 2005 00:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Starry will be timed out for my game in half a day. I'll challenge you again then Casuistry. I'm on a roll - two games in a row without losing to you :)

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Saturday, 18 June 2005 09:04 (twenty-one years ago)

D'oh.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 24 June 2005 23:47 (twenty years ago)

STEVEM!!!

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 27 June 2005 20:39 (twenty years ago)

I'm sitting here, playing through games, when suddenly I realize that the game I'm playing is the one against Stevem. I think, that's funny, I thought I lost this game, did we start a new one without me realizing it? And then I realize that, no, apparently Steve didn't notice the mating move! And now I've got him in a knight fork and am going to win his queen.

I don't know what the moral is, though.

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 27 June 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

that steve's not very good at mating?

ken c (ken c), Monday, 27 June 2005 22:02 (twenty years ago)

Too much attention is placed on the big O anyways. Can't we just have more fun pushing the pieces around?

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 27 June 2005 22:04 (twenty years ago)

Dude I've totally crashed in this game as I was too fixated upon the knight trap. Can't believe I didn't see the subsequent knight fork.

Ken surely we are going to have to call our game a draw?

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 08:56 (twenty years ago)

haha good one steve! ;)

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 09:19 (twenty years ago)

let's see you try and win this bitch then...

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 09:20 (twenty years ago)

Steve, 15 Qxh7# would have given you the win. I was all "la dee da, I'm up a piece!" and overconfident and I didn't even see it until just after I moved.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

i just wish i instantly knew what '15 Qxh7#' meant

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 16:22 (twenty years ago)

On move 15, your Q (queen) could have taken (x) what was at square h7 -- in this case, the pawn that you decided to take with your knight (N) instead.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 16:23 (twenty years ago)

Go to http://www.redhotpawn.com/gameanalysis/boardhistory.php?gameid=1181146 and scroll to move 14b (black) and check it out.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 16:24 (twenty years ago)

i figured it out. jesus, what a ridiculous oversight.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 16:24 (twenty years ago)

Well, it happens sometimes. I didn't see it either until it was too late, after all.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 16:26 (twenty years ago)

well i'm regretting not accepting the draw against stevem now :-(

ken c (ken c), Monday, 4 July 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)

ken i just want to see how long we can drag it out - i'll probably resign once that final white pawn goes.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 4 July 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

(Ken, why didn't you just take the bishop on move 6?)

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 4 July 2005 17:39 (twenty years ago)

haha wow that move was about three weeks ago i'm surprised i even remember - i probably just wanted to open up the pieces a bit!

ken c (ken c), Monday, 4 July 2005 20:49 (twenty years ago)

You would have gotten the bishop for free, though! (QxB, QxQ, BxQ, so Steve loses the B & Q and you lose the Q, no?)

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 4 July 2005 21:04 (twenty years ago)

three weeks pass...
I'm in the middle of moving house and I'm going to (temporarily) lose my internet connection at the end of this week, then after that I'm off to France for two weeks holiday, so I won't be playing chess again till late August.

Casuistry & Ken C - hopefully we can get our games finished by Friday morning. If not, please don't kill me on the timeout - I'll be back at some point.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 08:24 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
Someone, hit me!

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 15 August 2005 23:30 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, I could't bear another beating.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 15 August 2005 23:40 (twenty years ago)

Well, that's fair. But there are those who must be ready to beat me?

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 04:17 (twenty years ago)

How good do i need to be in order for it not to be a joke playing? I have Chessmaster which they say uses a ranking system very similar to that of the U.S. and my ranking is abt 1300 which they say is an intermediate beginner. I've only been playin for abt two weeks so hopefully this will improve.

jeffrey (johnson), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

ok challenge me. i am pretty useless but im still game....for a game

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

i am registering redhotpawn style just now.
