Thanks for sharing that, sad stuff, but we'll get past it. Love the thugs not even keeping quiet about the $20!

Kids.
― Pete Scholtes, Tuesday, 18 February 2014 23:34 (twelve years ago)
I mean, there are a bazillion words you could have used to describe the guys who were paid to be there, why did you have to pick the one that has become the proxy stand-in for "nigger"?
― sent as gassed to onto rt dominance (DJP), Tuesday, 18 February 2014 23:38 (twelve years ago)
if you want to take the article's source for it it seems the phrase would have been 'hired goons', shame to miss a chance to use 'hired goons'
― j., Tuesday, 18 February 2014 23:45 (twelve years ago)
Should've said "bootleggers," chum.

this state blows snowballs
― Eric H., Friday, 21 February 2014 17:37 (twelve years ago)
all I know is that yesterday I drove into work because I was going to run home improvement errands afterward; I left the office at 5:30 to a light mist, was in my car by 5:40, then spent the next HOUR attempting to travel 4 miles to Home Depot
at least if there had been actual WEATHER happening there would have been an excuse; it literally took me 55 minutes to travel 3 miles
― sent as gassed to onto rt dominance (DJP), Friday, 21 February 2014 17:44 (twelve years ago)
based on the updates i'm getting from the city of st paul this snow emergency is going to persist for 72 hours
― goole, Friday, 21 February 2014 19:05 (twelve years ago)
minnesotans, on the other hand, will persist eternal

The "I mean" threw me, but is this a response to what I posted--"thugs"? Hoping you're not serious.
― Pete Scholtes, Monday, 24 February 2014 06:44 (twelve years ago)
I think it was what looked like an instant retraction -- "Kids."
― Eric H., Monday, 24 February 2014 11:50 (twelve years ago)
Ah, thanks. No, I meant "Kids" as an indulgent sigh. Like, the fact that they shared the price is kind of endearing. And I hope it's obvious "thugs" has a common political and non-racial context (strikers calling private detectives "gun thugs," Republicans calling protesters against Scott Walker "union thugs," etc.). The "thug life" sense hadn't occurred to me.
― Peter Scholtes, Monday, 24 February 2014 13:38 (twelve years ago)
Think everyone would be happy with 'hired goons'.
― baked beings on toast (suzy), Monday, 24 February 2014 13:56 (twelve years ago)
xp: (Though of course it will next time! You guys are nice, thank you for supporting my retraction anyway.)

I prefer G-men.
― Eric H., Monday, 24 February 2014 13:58 (twelve years ago)
Yeah, this might be best taken as a "you live, you learn" moment.
Just like I learned never again to go to Bar Louie after reading (between the lines) their dress code.
― Eric H., Monday, 24 February 2014 13:59 (twelve years ago)
Which is?
― Peter Scholtes, Monday, 24 February 2014 14:12 (twelve years ago)
No "athletic clothing." No "flat-brimmed hats." No "excessively baggy clothes."
― Eric H., Monday, 24 February 2014 14:18 (twelve years ago)
Oh, I see this is actually a thing: http://www.wmctv.com/story/23043348/memphis
― Eric H., Monday, 24 February 2014 14:19 (twelve years ago)
That exists in the UK: no hoodies/caps/trainers is a THING in many clubs.
― baked beings on toast (suzy), Monday, 24 February 2014 14:58 (twelve years ago)
Yeah, I've talked to Minneapolis bouncers who confessed to using double-carding and cleavage restrictions for management-driven racial profiling policies as well--this is going back to the '90s.
― Peter Scholtes, Monday, 24 February 2014 18:16 (twelve years ago)
Take "racial profiling" there as ironic, since I'm seemingly making myself easily misunderstood, including (apparently) meaning to say I appreciate what I now see as people's kindness and sensitivity here while still not agreeing that "thug" should be abandoned--it has the appropriate connotation of aggression for hire, and in the case of the caucus, I wasn't even sure the young people in question would identify as African American. By the way, the next caucus went fine, though proof of residence was required--now there's a real slippery slope.
― Peter Scholtes, Monday, 24 February 2014 18:29 (twelve years ago)
Racial profiling as in restricting the number of people of color in a club. Really wished I'd gotten this story on the cover of City Pages as I tried to do at the time--not many bouncers willing to go on the record "in real time."
― Peter Scholtes, Monday, 24 February 2014 18:32 (twelve years ago)
in fairness lots of times even clubs that sounds like they are exclusively catering to african americans (or events, etc) have "no jerseys, no sneakers, no hats")....like ones that advertise on KMOJ, usually billed as "for the grown and sexy", seems like they are trying to cater to an older audience w/less chance for trouble

My coworker regaled us this morning with a story of how he stayed in downtown Minneapolis over the weekend and thought he'd be able to get around using the skyways and light rail. Spoiler: he froze his ass off.

there's a big new bar/club type thing in uptown called... "coup d'etat". and now i see news that there's a new place coming into the warehouse dist. called... socialista. i think it's supposed to be caribbean!

though i think i like a trend of inapposite political struggle names over the pointlessly blank ("borough". "parlour". etc.) (a place called "etc" is surely on the way)
