Agh during my degree I undertook some teaching discourse analysis and this exact description of 'adding zero' was determined to be particularly confusing to young maths students. Why didn't they go with the actually interesting 'discovery' of zero?

That's the thing I don't get about that series of adverts - he is actually meant to be a prick, very clearly, and yet he's the one selling the product to the other characters, it seems? So... buy the product, be a prick like this guy?
― emil.y, Friday, 28 February 2014 19:50 (twelve years ago)
I think he might be intended as an endearing dork rather than insufferable wanker.

I'm sure the awesome bros who wrote that ad didn't consciously mean it this way but it's pretty misogynist in addition to otherwise being terrible.
― Doritos Loco Parentis (Hurting 2), Monday, 12 May 2014 04:07 (twelve years ago)
it's incredibly misogynistic. i think they made this one in order to offset that fun aspect of it, somehow, but it doesn't work.

That Werther's Original ad where the narrator recalls the time she visited her 'favourite caramel shop' makes me feel irrationally embarrassed. For one, I don't think I've ever heard of a caramel shop, let alone visited enough to have a favourite one. I don't think I've even met anyone who likes caramel enough to get even remotely excited about visiting a 'caramel shop'. What's more, if I were to ever visit such a theoretical Wonka factory, bedecked in sparkling gold and where kindly old gentlemen inspect each batch with a jeweller's eye, I'd be pretty fucking annoyed if one of them were to hand me a Werther's bloody Original.
― 1 pONO 3v3Ry+h1n G!!!1 (dog latin), Monday, 12 May 2014 09:33 (twelve years ago)
Just tried googling 'caramel shop' and all the links were either to Werther's Originals or to people making the same complaints as you on other forums.
― Turtleneck Work Solutions (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Monday, 12 May 2014 12:40 (twelve years ago)
Though I suppose those people could actually just be you using a variety of internet aliases and taking your complaint to as many places as possible.
― Turtleneck Work Solutions (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Monday, 12 May 2014 12:45 (twelve years ago)
Hah, I guess what annoys me most about the whole Werthers aesthetic are manifold:
- They've always been slightly creepy - They try and generate a false sense of nostalgia which doesn't exist - the company has existed in some shape or form in Germany since 1903 but the brand 'Werther's Original' only went global in the 1990s, so it's bullshit basically. - They're not even real caramels, they're boiled sweets with caramel flavourings, so it's bullshit basically. - Just, just the horribleness of those ads - what's the opposite of a strawman? where someone creates a benefit on the basis of a false assumption (i.e. I'm obsessed with nasty hard caramel flavoured sweets).

anyway, the mentos bumper ads that wrap all the e4 programmes at the moment, the 'cool' members of the public break-dancing or free-running, are some low-quality, sub-apprentice-task bollocks.
