Can I ask about a thing that may or may not be a thread somewhere? I've seen dozens of thinkpieces and tons of social media posts about this, but can't find a simple explanation of what the Richard Sherman / U.S. football player thing was. I understand he had a 'rant' of some kind that upset people, but it's genuinely hard to parse the basic facts of the thing!

kind of think-piecey but does lay out the timeline/facts

he made a play that won his team the penultimate american football game of the year then was immediately interviewed and yelled and insulted the team he just beat - then for the next few days the media and much of the american people used barely coded racist language like "thug" and "animal" to describe him which was eventially problematized when they learned he graduated from one of the best colleges and spends his free time doing community service, many thinkpieces were conceived, i got in a fight with my cousin on facebook

From a national sportswriting perspective there really weren't that many articles attacking Sherman was there? felt like there was a zillion pieces rushed out to defend him from a backlash that never really came. not even Rick Reilly or Gregg Easterbrook bit on that. My issues with Sherman lie in 1) calling out Crabtree when really Kaepernick should've known to throw it out the back of the endzone (the ball was underthrown, play didn't have much to do with Crabtree really), and then 2) buying like a million bucks worth of gold-plated Beats headphones (which is offensive to the audiophile part of me)

lol xp

lag∞n, Friday, 31 January 2014 15:09 (twelve years ago)

the word 'thug' was used in an awful lot of articles that were defensive about him too. don't necessarily see how "lots of people said thug on TV = wow so much racism about Richard Sherman"

frogbs, Friday, 31 January 2014 15:12 (twelve years ago)

Everything I do is 100% thuggish ruggish

lag∞n, Friday, 31 January 2014 15:20 (twelve years ago)

as usual darragh is flat0out wrong, "thug" is certainly one of the more coded epithets here as well, though not only in a racial way

lex pretend, Friday, 31 January 2014 15:21 (twelve years ago)

you guys invented 'thug'!

well not invented, but it's a colonial term, right?

goole, Friday, 31 January 2014 15:23 (twelve years ago)

bilbo bobbins (how's life), Friday, 31 January 2014 15:24 (twelve years ago)

it's not like "thug" codes racially guys

lag∞n, Friday, 31 January 2014 15:30 (twelve years ago)

can't recall where I first read about thugees (was long before Wikipedia) but I do recall being really pruriently fascinated

deems is it at all possible you're pondering 'thug' through a soccerball viewers' lens here

wilful brony (DJ Mencap), Friday, 31 January 2014 15:31 (twelve years ago)

i wd've first become aware of thuggee either thru non-racist sitcom It Ain't 'alf Hot Mum or non-racist sketch show The Two Ronnies iirc

a horse divided cannot stand (darraghmac), Friday, 31 January 2014 15:34 (twelve years ago)

irish in-laws have used the expression to refer to black guys with Dub accents, of course you mayn't have come across it yrself

regret it? nope, said it? yep (Noodle Vague), Friday, 31 January 2014 15:35 (twelve years ago)

Just checked seems to be down as an american term as a handy way of insulting either?

a horse divided cannot stand (darraghmac), Friday, 31 January 2014 15:37 (twelve years ago)

But i always thought black irish meant black irish so srsly idk

a horse divided cannot stand (darraghmac), Friday, 31 January 2014 15:38 (twelve years ago)

i saw that American variant, obv there is a degree of US-Irish intercommunication somewhat higher than US-Englander so who knows

my half-joshing point was mainly don't crack on that you have no racial epithets of yr own tho
