I don't remember exactly when S1 stepped up, but it was somewhere in there. Otherwise I wouldn't have been so hyped about S2 when it finally got on tv. I have the dvds. I should watch it again.
― Johnny Fever, Saturday, 25 January 2014 04:16 (ten years ago) link
i think it goes pretty fast. only the first one or two are a touch wacky-post-friends-sitcomy.
but s1 is short too.
― j., Saturday, 25 January 2014 04:24 (ten years ago) link
it feels so weird that they were trying to have genuine gravitas back then, knowing how excellent it would get when they finally ditched that business
― Nhex, Saturday, 25 January 2014 04:25 (ten years ago) link
I guess this is...good-ish news...?

Cuz-Bros??
― Nhex, Thursday, 3 April 2014 19:53 (ten years ago) link
good news imo. i can see a show with a Happy Endings-ish sensibility doing better in Comedy Central's current primetime climate than on the networks.

But where's Eliza
― Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Friday, 4 April 2014 16:22 (ten years ago) link
good fucking question tbh
― some dude, Friday, 4 April 2014 16:33 (ten years ago) link
Eliza & Elisha need to stay on TV in perpetuity. maybe they can get the Letterman gig.
― some dude, Friday, 4 April 2014 16:34 (ten years ago) link
Otm, i'd watch them do a tag team talk show host as the sisters from Happy Endings. That would rule.
I'm happy Pally's ended up on The Mindy Project, he's pretty good there. It's a shame the New Girl writers have no clue what to do with Wayans.
― an enormous bolus of flatulence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 4 April 2014 17:03 (ten years ago) link
nah Wayans is great on New Girl. imo one of the most inspiring stories in the recent history of network casting is how they went from having one token black guy in the pilot to having a different one in the series and then bringing back the original and having GASP two funny and distinct black guy characters in a network sitcom cast.
― some dude, Friday, 4 April 2014 17:07 (ten years ago) link
I don't think he's been awful by any means and I'm glad he's there, it just feels like the writers aren't sure what to do with him, which is why they keep going back to the well with his Cece storyline. Feel like he just kinda gets wasted in some episodes.
― an enormous bolus of flatulence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 4 April 2014 17:10 (ten years ago) link
yeah but that's the case with everybody on that show whenever they decide to refocus on Jess/Nick/Schmidt, before that they gave him a lot of screen time/plots
― Nhex, Friday, 4 April 2014 17:20 (ten years ago) link
Yeah, that ties into my larger problem with this recent season in that the Jess/Nick stuff was eating up way too much unfunny time and giving all of the other characters short shrift.

Except Dave. I know Dave had to be there in order for the show to function, but I never liked him.
― Johnny Fever, Sunday, 19 October 2014 15:53 (nine years ago) link
that's so Dave!
― kinder, Sunday, 19 October 2014 17:47 (nine years ago) link
Dave won me over sometime around when the show started being consistently great... probably just after the beginning of season 2

Dave (and Dave Sr.) was (are) responsible for one of my top 5 Happy Endings things - the "Mr. Rose was the name of my father." "But... that's me." bit.
― Jouster, Monday, 20 October 2014 07:07 (nine years ago) link
Dave's dance at the start of the very last episode, when everyone disappears from the kitchen, is amazing

ok i've been out of the loop with this show (and happy endings) ... am i the only one more than a little FREAKED OUT at how much wayans jr takes after his dad?? holy moly. at first i was like dang damon wayans is looking good these days. i mean obviously i am an idiot. but really. it is astonishing.
― TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Monday, 20 October 2014 22:22 (nine years ago) link
Dude's funnier than his dad.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 20 October 2014 22:27 (nine years ago) link
his dad maybe a little more earnest? but they have really similar timing.
ok i have now confirmed via the internet that that is the general consensus. apologies for bringing such a tired observation to the table.
anyway, thank you thread for alerting me to his, and this show's existence
― TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Monday, 20 October 2014 22:27 (nine years ago) link
yeah Dave started out being the archetypal Male Sitcom Lead Who Is Not Actually Funny and then got really really funny, partly because they played off of how lame he is so well

AKA The Britta track
― Nhex, Monday, 20 October 2014 23:03 (nine years ago) link
Haha, yeah sorta. Except I still don't like Dave most of the time except for the odd gag.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 20 October 2014 23:07 (nine years ago) link
Dave's 1/16th Navajo schtick during the Thanksgiving episode was amazing
― 💪😈⚠️ (DJP), Monday, 20 October 2014 23:50 (nine years ago) link
Ross was a crap character in Friends until they made his inherent lameness the joke in later seasons. See Dave as kind of the same

― Johnny Fever, Friday, 14 November 2014 22:17 (nine years ago) link
Watched the first two episodes of Benched. Coupe is as lovely as ever but it's got that familiar USA veneer of mediocrity. Hope it gets better and they give Maria Bamford more to do. Marry Me pilot was a better start, glad it's doing OK ratings-wise for NBC.
― Nhex, Sunday, 23 November 2014 20:09 (nine years ago) link
omg what does this meeeeeaaaaannnnn https://twitter.com/happywrites/status/563844694820405248
like, half of the Happy Endings cast have left their post-HE shows (Wayans, Pally) or their shows have been cancelled (Coupe)
though there's still the other three, but honestly save Wilson, who I also liked, the other two who have work lined up were the weakest so I'm fine with a new, streamlined Happy Endings with just Wayans, Coupe, and Pally
I realize I'm getting far too ahead of myself here
― Tay-Tay Brooklynpants (Murgatroid), Saturday, 7 February 2015 19:55 (nine years ago) link
If anyone thinks that series Elisha Cuthbert is on will last beyond a few airings, they're mistaken. And I haven't been following Marry Me at all, but I'd have to think Casey Wilson could pull double duty since her husband's the boss and also created Happy Endings.
I haven't seen Zachery Knighton since the last episode of Happy Endings.
― Johnny Fever, Saturday, 7 February 2015 20:21 (nine years ago) link
As one commenter pointed out, this might just be the day that Happy Endings shows up on streaming platforms.
― Johnny Fever, Saturday, 7 February 2015 20:25 (nine years ago) link
It warms my heart to think that Wayans and Pally left their much more successful shows to do Happy Endings again
― Tay-Tay Brooklynpants (Murgatroid), Saturday, 7 February 2015 20:26 (nine years ago) link
As for the show appearing on streaming platforms, it is, or was, on Netflix, at least here in Canada. I know because I tried to convert some friends with a few episodes, they weren't into it :((((
― Tay-Tay Brooklynpants (Murgatroid), Saturday, 7 February 2015 20:34 (nine years ago) link
shoot, didn't know Wayans Jr. was leaving New Girl again. bummer.
― Nhex, Saturday, 7 February 2015 20:52 (nine years ago) link
Pally was one of the few revolving door supporting players on The Mindy Project who really fit into the show and was used well, shame to see him go. and New Girl w/ Wayans is so great, bummed that he's doing too. they better both be doing lots of good shit in the near future to justify all this.
