This show is great again

you are kind, I am (waterface), Wednesday, 22 January 2014 16:20 (twelve years ago)

Adam basically sexually assaulted Natalia (and he didn't seem to treat Hannah too great in the sack either), made him way less sympathetic to me

Ayn Rand Akbar (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 22 January 2014 16:22 (twelve years ago)

yeah he's a pig for doing that but she seemed to be yelling at him b/c he dumped her and never called

you are kind, I am (waterface), Wednesday, 22 January 2014 16:25 (twelve years ago)

i think this is the worst season by far

max, Wednesday, 22 January 2014 17:13 (twelve years ago)

well this ep was the worst since s1 imo

johnny crunch, Wednesday, 22 January 2014 17:14 (twelve years ago)

hope it turns around but agree with max. everything so far has been redundant at best.

ryan, Wednesday, 22 January 2014 17:16 (twelve years ago)

i watched up through the sixth episode on a screener and found it just got worse. though other people think the 4th, 5th, 6th episodes redeemed the first three so maybe im just wrong

max, Wednesday, 22 January 2014 17:21 (twelve years ago)

there's no reason to publicly trash someone like that

Not to like hyperlink a thinkpiece or whatever, but Adam kind of assaulted her. I laughed at "Did you leave in a hurry?" and then laughed harder at Ray laughing at the zing, anyway.

Also kind of grossed out by Adam's grunting "I can't sleep if I don't come" with Shoshanna in the room.

Walter Galt, Wednesday, 22 January 2014 17:33 (twelve years ago)

She seemed way more pissed about him not calling, she obviously cares about him still

you are kind, I am (waterface), Wednesday, 22 January 2014 17:59 (twelve years ago)

watched up through the sixth episode on a screener

Woah didn't know Scrooge McDuck posted here, congrats.

you are kind, I am (waterface), Wednesday, 22 January 2014 17:59 (twelve years ago)

"Worst since s1" doesnot scan to me, nearly half of s2 was a waste of time

Simon H., Wednesday, 22 January 2014 18:07 (twelve years ago)

yeah Season 2 was pretty bad

you are kind, I am (waterface), Wednesday, 22 January 2014 18:14 (twelve years ago)

I've rarely completely loved or completely hate an episode of the show. There's usually some good dialogue, and there's usually at least the enjoyment of recognition (the locations, the character types, the reasonably-well-done "nowness" of it). So it's always a show that entertains me enough to keep watching and rarely blows me away.

agreed

Evan, Wednesday, 22 January 2014 21:50 (twelve years ago)

It's ever so shallow...

Le passé, non seulement n'est pas fugace, il reste sur place (Michael White), Wednesday, 22 January 2014 23:01 (twelve years ago)

(But I think that's rather apposite)

Le passé, non seulement n'est pas fugace, il reste sur place (Michael White), Wednesday, 22 January 2014 23:06 (twelve years ago)

the reasonably-well-done "nowness" of it

So well put and so key. Unlike every other movie or TV show where a young person's bedroom has been production-designed with completely incongruous band posters, everything seems totally real on GIRLS

Walter Galt, Thursday, 23 January 2014 08:56 (twelve years ago)

@Walter Galt, which is funny because I recommended it to my 42-year old workmate. He watched 5 minutes of it and said all of it felt too contrived/forced.

shoshanna feels like one of those occasional tertiary side characters who is funny precisely because they are a (one-note) "type" who has been inflated into one of the main characters. it's like if the soup nazi moved in with jerry or something and just kept on doing the same schtick. not that it really bothers me though.

i think this is a pretty good show, probably in the top 25% of recentish TV dramas. it's not one of the best things on TV, it's not one of the worst, it's not revolutionary, it's just... pretty good. like all shows it has subplots and whole episodes that fall flat, and others that are very good. which i'm fine with.

kramer was sort of one-note

tɹi.ʃɪp (Treeship), Friday, 24 January 2014 04:08 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, some of Shoshana's lines this season have felt more like, "Wouldn't it be funny for Shoshana to say this?" than genuine-sounding dialogue. But I guess she's always kind of flirted with caricature.

jaymc, Friday, 24 January 2014 04:09 (twelve years ago)

i laughed when the guy at the bar described shoshanna yelling "hey hottie you know where to find some dank weed"

i want to say one word to you, just one word:buzzfeed (difficult listening hour), Friday, 24 January 2014 05:15 (twelve years ago)

I think this season is a lot less organic so far... like, Caroline is Poochie

Just throw a grenade into the foxhole and see what happens

I'm not gonna stress though, still gonna watch

, Friday, 24 January 2014 05:17 (twelve years ago)

Like these tricks feel like what people do in creative writing classes do when they're on deadline at the end of the semester and are at a loss

I don't think the pressure of meeting the deadlines of a season has been conducive to the writers

They should take a year off like Louie

, Friday, 24 January 2014 05:20 (twelve years ago)

kramer was sort of one-note

you know, I thought of that. i'm actually not a seinfeld fan, but I didn't want to anger those who are/were.

"Did Marnie finally throw in the towel?"

great episode imo

tɹi.ʃɪp (Treeship), Monday, 27 January 2014 04:22 (twelve years ago)

When you watch these on-demand, there are these little after-interviews with Dunham and they're awful. It's just like Dunham explaining what happened in the show and why in the most captain-obviousy way whatsoever.

Burt Stuntin (Hurting 2), Monday, 27 January 2014 04:26 (twelve years ago)

Yeah those are the worst.

tɹi.ʃɪp (Treeship), Monday, 27 January 2014 04:27 (twelve years ago)

As for ep 3 -- the introduction of Adam's sister was sort of oddly handled I thought, like she was actually a seriously disturbed and disturbing character being handled in what seemed like a comic and lighthearted way and I wasn't sure what to make of it.

Burt Stuntin (Hurting 2), Monday, 27 January 2014 04:32 (twelve years ago)

ok dying at the gawker bit.

lollercoaster of rove (s.clover), Monday, 27 January 2014 05:32 (twelve years ago)

just finished seasons 1 and 2 on dvd. had to watch season 1 twice because i really didn't know what to think about it. specifically whether we were meant to like these people.

and according to the commentaries, the special effect in 2.09 is glycerin and conditioner. lena's dad complained about the amount, saying it was too much. odd conversation to have with your dad...

koogs, Monday, 27 January 2014 18:22 (twelve years ago)

feel like Laird is now my favorite/most sympathetic character

Ayn Rand Akbar (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 27 January 2014 18:44 (twelve years ago)

show seems to be going out of its way to make it really clear how horrible a person Jessa is

Ayn Rand Akbar (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 27 January 2014 18:45 (twelve years ago)

There was a subtle little touch I liked in the rehab ep, in the scene where Adam and Shoshana go off on a hike in the woods and Lena refuses and lies down and can be heard listening to This American Life (on her phone, I guess). There was sort of an insight there into both the security blanket-like effects of NPR programming and into Hannah's character there, I thought.

Burt Stuntin (Hurting 2), Monday, 27 January 2014 19:18 (twelve years ago)

Funny about Laird, cuz same actor plays the comically-evil Councilman Jamm on Parks and Rec. Love that guy.

hardest lols in the history of this show at "fat-free muffin of sociopathic detachment"

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Monday, 27 January 2014 20:50 (twelve years ago)

1 - Seems like a lot of the characterizations on here have reached self parody
2 - some pretty good dialogue this week
3 - lol gawker
4 - marnie is totally the kind of asshole who jogs full tilt down the sidewalks of chinatown with headphones on

this harmless group of nerds and the women that love them (forksclovetofu), Monday, 27 January 2014 20:59 (twelve years ago)

marnie is getting so marnie in these new episodes she's gonna go meta soon

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 27 January 2014 21:03 (twelve years ago)

also Adam's sister's clothing ensemble when they went to the cemetery was so great

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 27 January 2014 21:04 (twelve years ago)

Digging the hell out of this season so far. Leaning equally on the humor and loathsomeness is a good lookfor them.

Simon H., Monday, 27 January 2014 21:15 (twelve years ago)

hannah is now at larry david levels of cartoonish self absorption.

lollercoaster of rove (s.clover), Tuesday, 28 January 2014 01:39 (twelve years ago)

she always was.

tɹi.ʃɪp (Treeship), Tuesday, 28 January 2014 01:46 (twelve years ago)

Yeah but now it's extra super duper obvious

vylvyt ylvis (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 28 January 2014 02:02 (twelve years ago)

Like I have had tons of convos w/ ppl who legitimately do not pick up on the fact that Hannah is meant to be a pretty unlikable character and I feel like this is the first episode that gets really explicit about that and also the first that uses it as a plot point.

vylvyt ylvis (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 28 January 2014 02:03 (twelve years ago)

otm

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 28 January 2014 03:28 (twelve years ago)

yeah this ep was maybe a shark-jumping moment w/r/t the characters seeming like actual plausible people instead of (or in addition to) broad (lol) caricatures. I dig it tho. I also continue to envy the (old?) people who are all head-scratching "Do real people actually do that???" yes my generation is legit filled with narcissists and addicts and compulsive liars, let me show you them

my collages, let me show you them (bernard snowy), Tuesday, 28 January 2014 09:04 (twelve years ago)

How the hell did Laird get a turtle into a POM bottle
