dunno what his defence case is like but this dlt trial is all sorts of horrible

Read this in 'The Captive' by Proust just today, struck a chord:
"Lying, though it is so often deceptive and is the basis of all conversation, conceals less thoroughly a feeling of hostility, or of self-interest, or a visit which one wants to appear not to have paid, or a short-lived escapade with a mistress which one is anxious to keep from one's wife, than a good reputation covers up - to the extent of not letting its existence be guessed - sexual depravity."
― Ward Fowler, Friday, 17 January 2014 13:41 (twelve years ago)
Does Proust explore the idea of lying being the basis of all conversation more in this book? Sounds interesting
― badg, Friday, 17 January 2014 17:52 (twelve years ago)
well a large part of that particular volume is about the narrator's obsession with the lies that he and Albertine, his on-off love person, tell each other other, all the time, and that quote feeds into a larger theme about social duplicity and malice amongst the french aristocracy in times past - conversation in proust is p much always a snakepit of deception, snobbery, stupidity etc., all rendered as v. malcious comedy.
sorry this is a way away from rolf roache & DLT
― Ward Fowler, Friday, 17 January 2014 20:15 (twelve years ago)
That quote also stood out for me when I re-read The Captive a couple of months ago, more for the "Lying...is the basis of all conversation" is such a hook.
Awesome how you've quoted it here, comes off as even more savage...

lol or maybe he's faked his death to smoke out more internet libellers... wonder how the law stands on that- can you libel someone you reasonably believe to be dead, if they turn out not to be?

― Kim Wrong-un (Neil S), Thursday, 13 February 2014 15:26 (twelve years ago)
seriously though, does the CPS need to take a look itself? That's what the papers will be saying I would guess, though of course it was the same moral panic they created that caused allegations like the DLT/Roache ones to come to court.

given his acquittal for the other offences there might be an argument that the CPS are being willfully stubborn here

Have these unsuccessful cases perhaps been pursued to distract from investigations into police corruption behind Saville's escape from prosecution while he was alive? Just to 'David Peace' it all up, so to speak?
― you are clinically deaf and should sell you iPod (stevie), Monday, 24 February 2014 11:26 (twelve years ago)
Maybe, yes. They clearly believe they have the evidence to support a prosecution but are maybe still in denial of the power of celebrity in the face of such evidence, even washed up celebrity who was never all that in the first place.
― Idris Elba don't keep your lights on (onimo), Monday, 24 February 2014 11:29 (twelve years ago)
i'm not sure it's about the celebrity only, i've heard lawyers argue that these cases were not strong enough. i think there's a real concern that bringing cases just to be seen to be doing something, or for more nefarious reasons as stevie suggests, is just going to muddy the waters for potential cases with a genuine prospect of conviction in the future

Anyone remember the Times profile of DLT published just before the Yewtree situ blew up? Female interviewer noted that he was "handsy" throughout, and wanted to show her his library of photographs he'd taken of friends' teenaged female daughters. Is behind paywall so I cannot link it.

“The instructions suggest it would be harder to finish than Trivial Pursuits,” he said.
“The game’s complexity, and the fact Savile was the biggest sex offender in history, really puts you off from getting the die out...
“I know it’s not like an ouija board that could invoke the spirit of Savile.
