well i got all the stuff that was broad genre parody but i'm assuming there's some Hannibal-specific stuff that went over my head -- again i have no idea how much.

in any event it felt like they wanted to do something else in the vein of the Law & Order ep or the conspiracy theory episode but didn't have as strong a hook for it, i dunno.

i've never seen an ep of hannibal fwiw and didn't catch any refs to it

i dunno, the stuff vg ref'd up thread - "rain, classical music, weird colors" - are all fincher tropes too

if i hadn't read the thread first i would have primarily assumed zodiac, considering the show consisted of attack sequences followed by threatening letters, paranoid detectives in glum settings and an ambiguous "will we ever know" montage

but if this is all like hannibal too, then shit i gotta see me some hannibal

are creepy greenhouses a film noir thing, or am i just thinking of "the big sleep" and extrapolating it to all film noir?

more just going into a claustrophobic space, a spooky guy at the end of the hallway bolting upon spotting the detectives, and the detectives having to thrash around the claustrophobic setting, hopefully breaking at least one glass object

almost disappointed there wasn't more of ben folds

also i don't think this really pulled anything from hannibal other than a heightened stylized air, but everyone should still watch hannibal cuz it's great.

i think creepy greenhouses/labs are definitely a thing tho the main example i can think of atm is varicella

both make great lairs, naturally cluttered spaces with sharp corners

there's the creepyish greenhouseish guy in Twin Peaks too.

re this episode, I thought I was missing a key reference point because I didn't recognise the credits, but I think if not for those I'd just have taken it as a general post-Seven serial killer thing.

i don't think it was just hannibal. but abed's "profiler" was def a hannibal ref. "so many.. profiler shows... on basic.. cable.. so much pain.. ful writing."

not saying they aren't aware of hannibal (as per abed's dvr) just that the slow talking profiler wasn't invented in the last three years

oh, and Abed was deleting episodes of "The Bridge" and "Hannibal" show that have detectives with Aspberger's. He was also deleting episodes of "Johnny Spectrum"

or maybe the Hannibal guy doesn't actually have Aspberger's but they say he's "on the spectrum"

haha ok that's great. especially if that's an indication that one of the things they're walking back from season 4 is how Abed had begun to seem less like a functional adult than he had in earlier seasons.

right i wasn't saying the _content_ of the bit was all about hannibal. the delivery and setup was pure will tho.

man i hope hannibal is like the platonic ideal of these tropes cuz everything being described as oh so hannibal seems oh so familiar even though i've never seen the show

I'm on the "what are they parodying?" train, but I totally dug this episode. Love Troy with the blankets and cups, and Starburns' "hee haw!" was A+.

yeah starburns dave hee haw was probably the second biggest laff of the night for me after the dean snapping his fingers trying to get the call traced

Dean's snapping was ace, especially w/ the "look at the extension" tag

I mean, NBC has to renew something and its hitting that syndication gravy train

Gravy is for Sony, not NBC (though this means they're likely to make it super-worthwhile to NBC to buy another 13.)

this episode didn't have a ton of lols, but it had whatever quality harmon brings to the show in spades, and I thought it was solid.

nbc is a broadcast network. basic cable channels are amc, comedy central, espn, that sorta thing.

NBC's ratings are comparable to those of middling basic cable networks, so the confusion is understandable.

BUT hannibal is actually based on the original books, not the movies, so i can still be right about something

FWIW this was funny enough without getting what it was a parody of. In light of the ending it was possibly less about a parody for the sake of a parody as it was about creating the right atmosphere for the Pierce bombshell.

tbh i thought the pierce bombshell was so pointless it was 99% there for sake of the parody

also didn't we see pierce's ghost two episodes ago, that confuses me some

yeah, but didn't they also suggest he wasn't allowed on the premises of the college for some reason, thus the hologram?

supposedly this is gonna play out as a storyline, so we'll see how it goes. i'm surprised they're even bothering, honestly
