Man, Nancy is so consistently bizarre and weird and funny; I am surprised how low-brow and stupid it was considered in its time!!
― gybe horses (Stevie D(eux)), Saturday, 4 April 2015 21:46 (eleven years ago)
I got that first year Fanta reprint of the complete Nancy & there is defs some filler, just doing it so many decades there are a lot of standout ones, too.It does make me look at the comics page differently. Marmaduke is dumb as fuck for example but sometimes it will have composition, or a premise, that would seem avant garde out of context.

The pseudonymous new artist who started last week is pretty great already:

some of these new strips are like, peak-Peanuts good
― Evan R, Thursday, 19 April 2018 16:07 (eight years ago)
As someone who suffered through the Jerry Scott era (and never read any of the Gilchrist stuff), this is kind of amazing.
Even if I hadn't suffered through the Jerry Scott era, it'd still be amazing.
― Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 19 April 2018 16:16 (eight years ago)
These new strips are pretty good! I like all the modern tech gags. They do a good job of keeping the Bushmiller sensibility and style, but also feel fresh. My only gripe is that some of the adults look off-brand.

speaking of, when did Heathcliff get so weird and postmodern?

But Gilchrist is apparently still doing Sundays? Because now I'm really curious to see what Jaimes does with Sunday space.

the before is... well, yeah
Everyone is posting about the new Nancy writer. To help you make your own comparison, here is an entire Nancy strip from a few weeks ago by the old (and I do mean old) writer, followed by a strip from the new one. pic.twitter.com/efOeUJWm8t— Cybernetically Enhanced Abby Denton (@mizabitha) April 18, 2018

So it had basically turned into Pluggers?
― Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Friday, 20 April 2018 02:23 (eight years ago)
I don’t think pluggers is that sentimental about thirty years ago. that’s some weird specific fixationdo you think a slightly-younger cartoonist would say “we had that 70s show and seinfeld” because... uh, damn

Would have much preferred Nancy going to see ELO.
― Making Plans For Sturgill (C. Grisso/McCain), Friday, 20 April 2018 03:38 (eight years ago)
Thankfully that comic seems to have been published long after his death
Supposedly from 1998? That has to be a miscitation, right? Or the Gilchrists were showing the world that rock acts could have orchestras when... god, I can’t unravel how dumb and backward this is

Holy crap, I didn't realize they started in 1995. I assumed that strip was from the 60s or 70s.
― Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Friday, 20 April 2018 03:49 (eight years ago)
tbf pbs stations even now show stuff like a special evening with the moody blues
― mookieproof, Friday, 20 April 2018 03:53 (eight years ago)
That's because they buy programming from national PBS and stuff like Moody Blues concerts were paid for a long long time ago.
― Johnny Fever, Friday, 20 April 2018 03:58 (eight years ago)
yeah but the rights to air them don't actually last that long
― you bet, nancy (map), Friday, 20 April 2018 04:02 (eight years ago)
iirc they mostly show the “live at red rocks” which was kind of donated as a fundraiser show in 1993 or something. It’s up there with the mannheim steamroller christmas music shows in the rotation.
― mh, Friday, 20 April 2018 04:05 (eight years ago)
I'd be willimg to believe the Moody Blues paid for a Nancy feature back in the 60s. It was a prestige move.
― Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Friday, 20 April 2018 04:06 (eight years ago)
Moody Blues were on the Simpsons roughly the same time (The Homer & Flanders Go To Vegas ep).
