I'm in the middle of rewatching the first series at the minute, and I noticed something interesting (and a bit depressing if you thought that all the secret society stuff was rubbish). Someone mentioned how he had a dead rat nailed to his door when he pissed the society off. Either the writers forgot they'd used the idea before, or it's going to turn out to be them behind the bud crash (or at least, they'll be the main suspects towards the end of the series, before there's a twist and it turns out to be someone else). There were some lingering shots on last night's episode of the sheriff's office logo, on the computer wallpaper and the door, with the secret society trident on it too.

three weeks pass...

I just finished season 1, and have decided not to watch season 2. Mainly because I really enjoyed season 1's mystery, but feel no desire to keep watching the show. Especially after reading the comments on this thread about season 2.

Anyhow, can someone tell me who's at her door when she opens it at the end of season 1? My assumption is that it's Duncan.

yeah, I don't know if it's all the reruns the past few weeks or what, but I feel like this season has lost a lot of momentum, I was on the edge of my seat every week for the first half of the season. usually by halfway through the episodes, like tonight, I end up a little invested in it or seeing some strong scenes, but I'm not sure if the show is falling off or it's just me.

I was more disappointed by the explosives-in-the-hangar reveal: c'mon, if it wasn't the Real Killer trying to frame Terrence then surely it was Lamb? It's still too early for such a smoking gun, so to speak.

I thought this episode was fine, a good looking up after a rough patch. I've felt the same way as Alex, about the loss of momentum, but I think it's just in the mysteries of the week, and the terrible WHAT ABOUT THE BABY? subplot, which is thankfully (hopefully) finished. The bus crash & Logan stuff are still working for me.

The supporting cast keeps changing too much.

I love this though: it feels true to Veronica's character (she's too cynical and wounded to ever assemble a true Scooby Gang), and to the necessities of detective work in a smallish community. And a lot of these characters are stronger for only being onscreen long enough to deliver a joke or a clue--if there was ever a "Dick Episode" his assholism would lose its charm, or it'd turn mawkish.

I missed most of the first season of this, but liked it when I saw it; every time I've tried to watch it lately I'm just annoyed and irritated. it certainly acts like it thinks it's good, but it just isn't.

Is it just me or are they fairly nonchalant toward some peoples' misdeeds? Like the cheerleader/lesbian in this episode - you bust the mugger, but the girl who blackmails and outs her girlfriend just gets an 'oh well, such is life'? Seems like crappy writing.

I think it's been established before that Veronica really doesn't care too much about exposing people that she has any sympathy towards - she seemed to approve of Mac blackmailing all the rich kids for their purity test scores (though that whole plot was ridiculous).

This episode was pretty meh. Lamb is still a fantastic character, and I liked the "Rick Santorum" thing, but the whole thing wasn't terribly intriguing or funny.

Everything was OK, except the mystery of the week sucked.

I wonder if watching the first season on DVD, one after the other, colored my view of it - the writing was tighter and more cohesive, not too many characters got in the way. This year the mysteries have been boring, too many b-plots get in the way (girlfriend in a coma, etc.) and not enough screen time for Wallace.

Yeah, this season hasn't been as good as the first. And you're 100% correct that there's not been enough Wallace - that guy's fantastic.

That said, I thought last night's episode was the best one in a real long time. All of the various subplots got an interesting scene or two, the plot-of-the-week had some twists (even if it wasn't all that interesting), and look at all the characters who showed up. Cordelia, Harry Hamlin, the lawyer guy, Vinny Van Lowe.

i actually really liked the twelve angry men episode. just me?

season two doesn't seem so bad until i remember that the first season had the poker game / party stabbing / echolls suicide where this had the limp, limp 'donut run' deal and all the slightly inconclusive feeling stuff leading out of it. it's still, uh, 'highly watchable'. but if in season 3 they really go with having veronica go to college in her hometown (most hatable american tv readymade of them all) i very much doubt i will be able to carry on.

The 12 Angry Men episode had that woman who taught at the college and wanted to put a good word in for Veronica because she was exactly the type of person she wanted there, or something, so I'm worried it's going to go that way. It'll be like when the tiny town of Sunnydale suddenly turned out to have a University.

I'm still enjoying this, and the guessing game of how everything's going to be resolved, although I'm guessing that the guessing will turn out to be more fun than the real ending. And I'm still worried that it's all going to be down to the secret society (and that the sheriff is a member and has framed the baseball bloke). The secret society even had a cameo the episode after I had the thought, apparently just to remind the audience that they still existed (speaking of which, continuity weirdness? Last year they were ultra secret and Veronica had never noticed the school's logo had a trident, etc, this year they streak at the school fayre and Veronica's going "oh those wacky secret society types, it just wouldn't be the school fayre if they didn't run through it naked every year").

Apologies up front for being a petulant dork, but Sunnydale was always modeled fairly closely on Santa Barbara, which has a UC. And there were storylines in the high school seasons which involved college students. Remember the big phallic frat-snake-monster thing? I agree Veronica should get the hell out of Neptune, though.

So where is Neptune, precisely? Between LA and San Diego, in "Balboa County" ie Orange County? Last season Keith was a big Padres fan, now it seems there's another mysterious MLB club somewhere in the vicinity. And do OC'ers really go to San Diego more than LA, which the kids in this show seem to do? Did they shut Camp Pendleton down, turn it into a beach community?

she dated Troy briefly in the first season, only to discover that he's been two-timing her the whole time, trying to skip town for a drug deal. (which Veronica thwarts, natch.) he was in maybe episodes 2-5 of the first season.

They could have led up to Veronica's haunting a little, right? Or at least make it feel like the episode fits into some kind of timeline of recent episodes, rather than just a reminder that there's a big mystery to solve in the end (which will involve Steve Guttenberg, for he has no other reason to exist).

it was strange to have a kind of nothing episode (ep 17 (I can't even remember what it was supposed to be (looking: OK, not nothing but barely a mention of the bus crash (I know it's all involved) that is HAUNTING her in the following two episodes))) and then these two, much faster ones

they were just cycling through all poss baddies (w/ the weevil and w/ the gay radio kid and the pwt sister/family etcs)

despite the varying pace, ep to ep, it seems to be managing to juggle quite a few threads OK

the kendall casablancas revelation is a bit of a weird one. makes you wonder why she was hanging around w/ logan and desperate w/ duncan and stuff, when she has the fitzpatricks behind her, etc

I'm still enjoying it
