7:58 for the beer mile, a 46 second pr. Had a can malfunction on the last lap, should have been faster.

Jeff, Sunday, 8 December 2013 18:16 (twelve years ago)

that is impressive, just drinking four beers in eight minutes without vomiting is reasonably difficult.

I managed a 2:09 at the half marathon, which I am very happy with since my goal was 2:10, and that was before I realized I'd chosen a difficult race with tons of hills, including a brutal one at mile 10 which made me despair. but I bounced back!

three weeks pass...

Last run of the year today. Finished with 2049 miles ran over 285 hours. I really fell off in November/December after the marathon, so it should have been better. But that's fine, I basically trained as hard as I could for 10 months. It was worth it.

four weeks pass...

Thinking about starting running on my lunch hour. In DC. Right when summer kicks in. I know.

But I think my office is in the perfect place to do it. I've got a couple of bridges nearby that I can easily measure distance on. I've been doing long walks over lunch for the last couple months. It's probably just the right time for me to start.

So I'm wondering if there's any advice from other ilxors who run on their lunch hour. I haven't done any running in about 5 years, and when I did I was always setting out from home. We've got a shower at work. Bring a change of clothes, some running shoes, and a towel and I should be okay, right?

Finally started this! Only took me six months of procrastination. This feels so rewarding. Did the first week outside when it was slightly warmer out doing just what I planned before, running across the Roosevelt Bridge and back. Since the cold snap I've stayed inside on a treadmill, which I'm thinking I kinda like better for now? I feel less inclined to stop and take breaks at least.

how's life, Tuesday, 28 January 2014 14:39 (twelve years ago)

Lunch runs are something I've never been able to do. I don't like to feel rushed and I don't think I could get in a sufficient enough workout in the time allowed.

My running has been dire this year. Between having a kid, polar vortex x2, and a sketchy hamstring, I've only run 27 miles this year. And the bulk of those were last week, I got out 3 times for 16 miles. I've lost almost all of my hard earned fitness. I signed up for an 8K at the end of March, but doubt I'll be anywhere near PR shape.

Jeff, Tuesday, 28 January 2014 15:23 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, it's a pretty tight squeeze. I can only run for about half an hour since I have to factor in changing, shower, and actually eating lunch. But fortunately 30 minutes is pretty much my upper limit for running anyway at present.

how's life, Tuesday, 28 January 2014 15:43 (twelve years ago)

i ran over that weekend before the snow storm when it was warm out. i was running on a gentle downhill when i tripped or my shoe got caught, something i didn't notice and don't remember happening, and i went flying. it's amazing how many thoughts you can have when your face is on the way to the ground. i caught the fall with my palms but then my elbow got scraped up bad. and both knees. i got a weird small black bruise on my hip. my neck and shoulders were sore from my arms jamming in. i fell on my whole body i guess. so my knees are still healing. that's not the first time i've fallen badly on a sidewalk while running. i try to avoid them. so dangerous, running!

i was able to run home, trying to avoid anyone seeing my bloody knees

spring sprung forward, time to put on the shoe again.

hopping hopping thread

erry red flag (f. hazel), Tuesday, 11 March 2014 04:26 (twelve years ago)

I'm running again. I pretty much have zero fitness. I can barely run 5 miles at my previous marathon pace, much less 26.2. Amazing how quickly you lose it. But I will get it back.

Jeff, Tuesday, 11 March 2014 11:21 (twelve years ago)

yeah, I've gone three months and I know it isn't going to be pretty when I finally step out.

erry red flag (f. hazel), Tuesday, 11 March 2014 13:58 (twelve years ago)

I went for a jog last weekend and had like zero ups.

Anyone get some good gear for spring/summer '14?

a lake full of ancient spices (los blue jeans), Wednesday, 12 March 2014 04:07 (twelve years ago)

I'm doing the local marathon again in four weekend's time, which seems worringly soon. The distance doesn't bother me too much, but I know my time will be absolutely no improvement on the last two years, so once again I'm asking myself why I didn't do more/better training. Have done zero fast running, which is really the key, but i am evidently very set in my ways and kind of get stuck in a training rut (mostly involves plodding to work and back each day and then doing a long run at the weekend). There's always next year though...

eardrum buzz aldrin (NickB), Wednesday, 12 March 2014 07:00 (twelve years ago)

You're like close to a 3 hour guy, right?

Jeff, Wednesday, 12 March 2014 11:02 (twelve years ago)

Ha I wish! Last two marathons have both been almost bang on 3:26, so that's a whole minute per mile slower than I'd need to run to get close to 3 hrs. Fastest one I ever did was 3:14 or something but that was 12 or 13 years ago and even that seems way out of reach to me now. Are you doing one this year Jeff?

eardrum buzz aldrin (NickB), Wednesday, 12 March 2014 13:52 (twelve years ago)

No fulls this year. Even if I wanted to, I'm so out of shape, I don't think I could give a good attempt for a fall one. Next year though. I know I got a 3:25 in me somewhere.

I'll be 35 this year so I'd only have to run a 3:10 to qualify for Boston! A super long shot, but I think if I have a solid couple of years of training I could go for it. Otherwise I just have to get older to qualify. In my 50's.

Jeff, Wednesday, 12 March 2014 15:16 (twelve years ago)

i am ashamed to say that i have never been able to run 3 miles at the end of winter. at the age of 29 i have finally discovered that i was always (1) trying too hard and (2) running uphill too much. wtf i just ran 3 miles easily because i went slow around a flat-ish loop. DUH.

sent from my butt (harbl), Friday, 14 March 2014 21:38 (twelve years ago)

Well done. Bring on Spring! I finally reached my sick-of-winter breaking point yesterday: had a 2-hr window free to run but it was just too cold (for Mid March, that is) so I picked up my mom's mail instead. Really ready for some warmth and humidity.

tobo73, Saturday, 15 March 2014 03:52 (twelve years ago)

4.5 miles. still just running around flat loop, maybe until mid april or so when i'll be bored.

sent from my butt (harbl), Monday, 24 March 2014 23:07 (twelve years ago)

So I have an 8k race this weekend and I'm way out of shape. Did some speed work last night for the first time in a long time to try and gauge if I could make a run at a PR. 5x800 meters and managed 3:32, 3:32, 3:31, 3:21, 3:21.

First two felt awful, but the next three were tolerable. Surprised that I was able to progress faster for each one. Still not sure about PR potential, but feel a little better.

Jeff, Tuesday, 25 March 2014 11:51 (twelve years ago)

well done jeff! the prospect of doing that would fill me w/ great dread

emmeline skankhurst (NickB), Tuesday, 25 March 2014 12:06 (twelve years ago)

nice! improving your times on successive blocks is a pretty good sign!

erry red flag (f. hazel), Tuesday, 25 March 2014 14:18 (twelve years ago)

What are people's thoughts on Nike Free 4's? Or Print's, or the new Lunar's?

I think I'm going to get the Free 4's.

, Tuesday, 25 March 2014 16:49 (twelve years ago)

Unexpected 8K PR today, 35:48. So out of shape, but I was annoyed so much by the 40,000 people around me racing that my anger fueled me to a slight PR.

Jeff, Sunday, 30 March 2014 21:12 (twelve years ago)

I'm sure I've mentioned this before in the thread, but racing is such a different feeling from just running. I kind of missed it.

Jeff, Monday, 31 March 2014 17:16 (twelve years ago)

Races certainly hurt more :)

robocop ELF (seandalai), Monday, 31 March 2014 17:20 (twelve years ago)

3:18:49 in this thing today, feel like a bag o' shite now though

narcissism of vas deferenses (NickB), Sunday, 6 April 2014 15:13 (twelve years ago)

Not bad!

robocop ELF (seandalai), Sunday, 6 April 2014 15:13 (twelve years ago)

pretty happy with it, hadn't done much for the last month tbh so i had no idea what sort of shape i was in. set off doing 7:30's and just prayed i wasn't going to blow up too badly

narcissism of vas deferenses (NickB), Sunday, 6 April 2014 15:18 (twelve years ago)

can't lie, last five miles was a grim trip to the pain cave

narcissism of vas deferenses (NickB), Sunday, 6 April 2014 15:19 (twelve years ago)

I'd be disappointed if it wasn't!

Nice job. that would be a dream race for me!

Jeff, Sunday, 6 April 2014 16:54 (twelve years ago)

just done my local parkrun, don't know if anyone else here has done one before but it was pretty good fun. basically you register one time online and you get a barcode ID, then you just turn up to whatever parkrun event you fancy wherever in the country/world, run a timed 5k and then they scan yr code after the finish and upload yr results. first 5k i've ever done so automatic PB! 26 minutes something, I actually took my dog who did a lot of my marathon training with me, but basically doesn't do fast and he wanted to keep stopping to do dog stuff and chill in the park whenever he got out of breath. we'd sprint past loads of people then stop to poop or pee or whatever and all the folk we overtook would come past again, and it would just keep going like that, but we don't care. awesome weather tho!

It's Pablum Time with (NickB), Saturday, 12 April 2014 11:18 (twelve years ago)

I signed up for a 5K all the way in September. I haven't run one in over 14 months, so that should be interesting. Hoping to finally go sub-20.

Jeff, Saturday, 12 April 2014 13:06 (twelve years ago)

think i need to ease my way in to doing some speedwork before i try and run one fast, think my heart would probably explode at the moment

super-psyched for the london marathon tomorrow - mo farah v kebede v mutai v kipsang, have no idea what will happen. and the amazing tiru dibaba too <3<3<3

It's Pablum Time with (NickB), Saturday, 12 April 2014 21:06 (twelve years ago)

I think mo will do well, but all this WR talk is cray.

Jeff, Saturday, 12 April 2014 21:38 (twelve years ago)

i think they'll need to push the pace to run the finish out of mo, but i guess the course in london isn't quite as fast as berlin or wherever

It's Pablum Time with (NickB), Saturday, 12 April 2014 21:47 (twelve years ago)

just seen that gebrselassie is going to be one of the pacemakers, what a tremendous honour to have him as your helper

It's Pablum Time with (NickB), Saturday, 12 April 2014 22:01 (twelve years ago)

crazy fast pace, thinking kebede is going to rip the legs off this thing

It's Pablum Time with (NickB), Sunday, 13 April 2014 09:36 (twelve years ago)

c'mon tiru!!

It's Pablum Time with (NickB), Sunday, 13 April 2014 09:55 (twelve years ago)

I love when elites try the marathon for the first time and are like uhhhhh, that was harder than I thought it would be. It's a humbling distance.

Jeff, Sunday, 13 April 2014 14:05 (twelve years ago)

haha it's true! dibaba made the transition a lot better than mo though. mo looked increasingly worse as the race went on but i kinda think that had he made the decision to go with the lead pack he would've gone faster. they weren't really going any quicker for the bulk of the race and he would've had a more positive state of mind maybe. kipsang looked unstoppable though, just a calm mask-like face through the whole thing, so serene

erry red flag (f. hazel), Monday, 28 April 2014 23:41 (twelve years ago)

Impressive. My best is 7:59, but I bet I could get closer to 7 if it wasn't 20 degrees outside when I run it.

Jeff, Tuesday, 29 April 2014 21:36 (twelve years ago)

I think I'm doing good at getting my base back. Getting up to 40 miles each week and have done 115 the past 30 days. Man, I can't wait until I hit those 50 mile weeks again.

Jeff, Thursday, 8 May 2014 11:14 (twelve years ago)

Jeff, your numbers boggle my mind sometimes. They make my knees hurt. Getting back into it as well after having to take about 3 weeks off due to extended spousal biz travel and small kids who aren't cool with me disappearing for an hour or so at a time. this week has felt great - so nice to get up early and head out the door in warmth and light rather than cold and dark! looking at a half-marathon in a few weeks.

tobo73, Thursday, 8 May 2014 12:28 (twelve years ago)

just ran a mile for time yesterday. 7:05!!! beat my previous time by over a minute and i haven't really been running much at all.

(•̪●) (carne asada), Thursday, 8 May 2014 12:32 (twelve years ago)

Nice! I'd love to do a one mile race. I think it may be the best/worst thing. I think my fastest mile (during another longer run) was 6:15ish.

Jeff, Thursday, 8 May 2014 13:03 (twelve years ago)

In a few recent instances after/during running, I have noticed that I perceive certain colors differently. Specifically chrome/silver, some greys and some off-whites have been shifting to teal for me. I've gone back to the same objects after cooling off and found them to be not teal in actuality. Anyone else experience anything similar? I don't have a lot of background with cardio (been jogging regularly since January; scattered attempts at exercise before that) so don't know if this is common.
