On the news I keep hearing "crashed into the roof" but that doesn't give an entirely accurate picture - it's a single-story building with, at least in part, a flat roof.

Madchen, Saturday, 30 November 2013 08:42 (twelve years ago)

The auld Clutha, eh? Never liked it as a pub much, I must admit. I haven't been as glued to 24 hour news since Johnny Smeaton did his superhero act @ Glasgow Airport that time.

...goes to show the small amount of tragic news in Scotland.

nostormo, Saturday, 30 November 2013 13:31 (twelve years ago)

There's plenty of tragedy going on in Scotland 24/7 believe you me!

Saturated with working class intelligence and not afraid to show it (Tom D.), Saturday, 30 November 2013 13:32 (twelve years ago)

like in any other place, but the difference is with the numbers i guess.
one man dead = no news
10 man dead = "breaking news"

nostormo, Saturday, 30 November 2013 13:34 (twelve years ago)

Just been forwarded a thing on FB from a famous American (who was in a recent WDYLL with an ILXor) "storm troopers" crashed it deliberately because they suspected there was an IRA meeting in there and Britain is a fascist dictatorship targeting innocent Irishes.

Probably belongs on the o_0 thread.

Ian Glasper's trapped in a scone (aldo), Saturday, 30 November 2013 13:41 (twelve years ago)

Bit of a noisy place for a meeting, there was a band going full tilt at the time

Saturated with working class intelligence and not afraid to show it (Tom D.), Saturday, 30 November 2013 13:45 (twelve years ago)

yeah, besides of that the theory is perfect

nostormo, Saturday, 30 November 2013 13:59 (twelve years ago)

Yes, there aren't a whole ton of more likely pubs just a few hundred yards up the road either. Top detective work, weirdo conspiracy dude!

ailsa, Saturday, 30 November 2013 14:02 (twelve years ago)

Shit. 8 people confirmed dead.

۩, Saturday, 30 November 2013 16:10 (twelve years ago)

In work at a different venue in glasgow all day today and not heard a single mention of this, from anyone.

ewar woowar (or something), Sunday, 1 December 2013 01:28 (twelve years ago)

i only talked to 4 people today and they all mentioned it.

i lost my shoes on acid (jed_), Sunday, 1 December 2013 02:57 (twelve years ago)

Not a pub I've ever drunk in, but have still had a stream of texts from friends in England over the weekend, checking in - seems to have been a big story down South. Hoping no ILXors have personal involvement.

Is that the same John McGarrigle that died in the helicopter crash?

it is!

i lost my shoes on acid (jed_), Wednesday, 4 December 2013 22:20 (twelve years ago)

Yes it is. I saw it on the facebook wall of someone I know, who wrote: "This is written by an old friend of my Mum's who died in The Clutha on Friday night. When i was a wee girl he picked me up and threw me in a rubbish skip and told me the rats were coming. You could have heard his laugh a mile away. Thinking of his family."

Eyeball Kicks, Wednesday, 4 December 2013 22:52 (twelve years ago)

bit reminiscent of tom leonard.

got an office christmas party tonight in Glasgow at... The Book Club, is that a place? Will also be around tomorrow evening if anyone fancies a pint, otherwise I'll... do something else. Like have a pint.

Fizzles, Thursday, 12 December 2013 10:25 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, the Book Club is a fairly dece pub/bar in the West End.

A drink tomorrow sounds doable for me Fizzles - any particular place/area you fancy?

Ward Fowler, Thursday, 12 December 2013 10:36 (twelve years ago)

how come you moved to glasgow Ward Fowler

conrad, Thursday, 12 December 2013 10:51 (twelve years ago)

to be closer to you conrad

Ward Fowler, Thursday, 12 December 2013 10:54 (twelve years ago)

That'd be great, Ward - I'm catching the sleeper back from the main station but anywhere on the subway loop/an easy bus route is fine. happy to play it by ear btw, but as I say I'll be around and footloose tomorrow evening.

Fizzles, Thursday, 12 December 2013 11:22 (twelve years ago)

but i live in london

Ward Fowler, Thursday, 12 December 2013 11:43 (twelve years ago)

Fizzles - sounds good, I work pretty close to Central Station so I'm sure we can find somewhere that suits us, even on a Friday night.

Ward Fowler, Thursday, 12 December 2013 11:46 (twelve years ago)

Bumping for any other Glasgow ILXors who might enjoy fapping tonight

(Fizzles - I sent you an email via ILX with my mobe no on it)

Ward Fowler, Friday, 13 December 2013 10:04 (twelve years ago)

cheers, Ward. Yep, be good to see all and sundry. I've got a crippling hangover, excitingly, but I think the only thing that's going to get me through it is another drink.

Fizzles, Friday, 13 December 2013 14:57 (twelve years ago)

Um, that's a Glasgow landline number I think, unless I'm being particularly dense?

Fizzles, Friday, 13 December 2013 14:59 (twelve years ago)

Right, this is on. Sounds like it's going to be fairly sedate - it's felt like someone's been having a funeral in my brain today and at times I've wanted to curl up in a little ball on the floor - but be good to see people. Will be in the station-convenient Stereo as soon as I can get out of work (probably about quarter/half past five).

Fizzles, Friday, 13 December 2013 15:33 (twelve years ago)

Sorry, I have been extraordinarily careless in my budgeting and have zero money for fun between now and Christmas Eve. Enjoy sitting on Stereo's tremendously uncomfortable chairs or sofas!

ailsa, Friday, 13 December 2013 15:50 (twelve years ago)

cheers ailsa - feel free to come along for an Xmas pint courtesy Santa tho if you want!

Fizzles, Friday, 13 December 2013 16:29 (twelve years ago)

Would love to, but even getting into Glasgow is a wee bit of a trek. Thanks for the offer though!

ailsa, Friday, 13 December 2013 16:39 (twelve years ago)

Small but perfectly formed FAP - very good fun, great to see Ward again after a six-year or so hiatus. Slept like a log on the sleeper back to London.

Fizzles, Saturday, 14 December 2013 10:34 (twelve years ago)

Yep, hope it's a longer and larger FAP next time, Fizzles - and that there isn't another six-year gap.

man i wish my people had this many words

j., Sunday, 23 February 2014 22:32 (twelve years ago)

Some of those are spelled wrong, mistranslated or just not particularly Glaswegian (stopped reading about half-way down). ILX compendium here:

This category contains Scots pejoratives

Ian Glasper's trapped in a scone (aldo), Monday, 24 February 2014 08:19 (twelve years ago)

I know I'm only 12 miles away from Glasgow and originally from EK which is mini-glasgow, so its possible lanarkshire/renfrewshire gets lumped in to it , but loads of those words are used here.
Gallus is a great word that no one uses it now. Even my EK friends say they havent heard it used in 30 years. Its a great Francie & Josie word though. Bring it back!
