idk what it is about me that I adore everything he's done in comic form, but find the animated/live action stuff an instant turnoff, even though I can see it's the same sense of humour? I'm sure i'm alone in this..

sktsh, Wednesday, 19 March 2014 23:54 (twelve years ago)

You are not alone in this, it feels a lot more heavy handed for one thing.

ewar woowar (or something), Thursday, 20 March 2014 00:54 (twelve years ago)

Think this would be a lot funnier if it was 5-10 seconds long, like an animated Vine or something

Vinnie, Thursday, 20 March 2014 03:14 (twelve years ago)

"Puppet Porno" was pretty funny but the cartoons are excruciating

open-y, ob-la-da (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 20 March 2014 03:40 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, these definitely feel like a step down, wish he'd return to cartooning, since he was so good at it. You could almost imagine the "Mr. Faeber" as a mid-quality PBF cartoon, but the length of the cartoon does it no favours, the joke should be over once the kid is eaten.

Bummer

"Dr. Edgar O. Wye," eh? Well at least he's doing the Gorey tribute to the full.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 19:48 (eleven years ago)

Little death? I'm guessing the other meaning won't be mentioned?

Unless I'm missing something, this one's kinda weak.

yeah. that one took me like 5 minutes to get and it wasn't worth it.

the execution is very good, better than the concept

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 17 December 2014 16:52 (eleven years ago)

I'm still not sure I get it. Santa is an elf in disguise?

Hark! The Village People (fake penthouse letters mcgee), Wednesday, 17 December 2014 16:59 (eleven years ago)

Santa is secretly impregnating all the elf mamas I guess? Not very good, anyway.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Wednesday, 17 December 2014 17:00 (eleven years ago)

would be funnier if it was one of the reindeer calves with santa's face amirite!!!!!

Drop soap, not bombs (Ste), Wednesday, 17 December 2014 20:36 (eleven years ago)

That one elf's dad is santa hence the red face. Yeah its a bit rubbish.

I checked Snoops , and it is for real (Trayce), Thursday, 18 December 2014 03:00 (eleven years ago)

I didn't realize the elves in the first panel were supposed to be child and not adult labourers.

Why is the elf giving the reindeer a wink?
Is the second panel trying to convey the reindeer turning around?
Why is there a reindeer in this at all?

poxy fülvous (abanana), Thursday, 18 December 2014 05:26 (eleven years ago)

The wink resembles Santa - further evidence.
Yes, in a moment of realization.
Santa needs someone to do the "keep this on the down low" to.

nickn, Thursday, 18 December 2014 05:49 (eleven years ago)

I love Mr Gurewich but its amazing how many of his strips need explaining/cause confusion/make no sense.

I checked Snoops , and it is for real (Trayce), Thursday, 18 December 2014 23:40 (eleven years ago)

I dunno, this is pretty untypical for him. Normally he nails the gag perfectly.

I blame the reindeer.

jmm, Thursday, 18 December 2014 23:52 (eleven years ago)

It's as if he just wanted to paint a pretty picture of a reindeer

Drop soap, not bombs (Ste), Friday, 19 December 2014 00:21 (eleven years ago)

what's in the picture framed by candy canes? is it a clue?

Philip Nunez, Friday, 19 December 2014 01:13 (eleven years ago)

It's a stale joke, but makes perfect sense. The pregnant elves in the last panel are an unnecessary "nudge, nudge, geddit?," imo.

nickn, Friday, 19 December 2014 04:16 (eleven years ago)

this one, a few back, is an all-timer imo

http://www.pbfcomics.com/261/

Simon H., Friday, 19 December 2014 04:22 (eleven years ago)

My favourite: http://www.pbfcomics.com/162

Now that I look back, he can get confusing at times, like the Edward Gorey and R. Crumb tributes.

jmm, Friday, 19 December 2014 05:17 (eleven years ago)

I think there's more to this joke, like maybe Santa replaced a regular elf with his child and the elf is in the bag, hence the conspiratorial wink.

Philip Nunez, Friday, 19 December 2014 08:06 (eleven years ago)

Or that Santa is running a Fritzl operation up there in the secluded North Pole.

Øystein, Friday, 19 December 2014 09:45 (eleven years ago)

I think there's more to it too, first thought was it's like in the cartoons where say huey due and luey stand on each other's shoulders and wear a big coat to look like a bigger duck. Hence the redness around the elf's jawline from where he wears a false beard. But I've got nothing from there.

ewar woowar (or something), Friday, 19 December 2014 12:17 (eleven years ago)

I still think it's just Santa porking Elf moms

Drop soap, not bombs (Ste), Friday, 19 December 2014 12:28 (eleven years ago)

wow wow wow at 261

tender is the late-night daypart (schlump), Friday, 19 December 2014 12:42 (eleven years ago)

Yeah. I know it's nothing but the chalkboard in that panel is so fucking amazingly done.

Drop soap, not bombs (Ste), Friday, 19 December 2014 12:57 (eleven years ago)

I'm looking at this from the reindeer's perspective:

1st panel: Reindeer sees a 'familiar' face amidst the three children, the child winks at him
2nd panel: Thinking baout things. He ponders if what he thinks is true, that Santa is the father of that elf
3rd panel: Santa gives the same sort of wink, but..

Argh fuck, I've got nothing. Reindeer in 3rd panel is all O_O. No idea on the rest. Yes, Santa maybe knocked up those women, but eh.. so?

a pleasant little psychedelic detour in the elevator (Amory Blaine), Friday, 19 December 2014 13:39 (eleven years ago)

I think maybe part of the funny is that the reindeer doesn't give a fuck/his blank expression?

Drop soap, not bombs (Ste), Friday, 19 December 2014 13:46 (eleven years ago)

In Finnish folklore at least, Santa has a wife. Presumably the lady elves have husbands too; the other elf kids don't look like Santa, so they must've been sired by male elves. The joke is to contrast the image of Santa as a kid-friendly do-gooder with the idea that he is secretly (hence the wink) an adulterer. This contrast is emphasized by making the one who discovers the truth be one of Santa's reindeer, i.e. someone who's generally (and in this comic strip too) depicted as an innocent animal.

Really, guys, this isn't rocket science!

Tuomas, Friday, 19 December 2014 13:46 (eleven years ago)

Point is, I refuse to believe it isn't rocket science.
