not at all off-topic! the last few are all for conferencecall.biz (a sneak preview is there right now, but the site will go live on Jan 2nd), and at one point i included a slow motion high-five from the stock footage you just linked to as one of the clips to be included. i took it out, though, because i think it's too well known and i want everything that people see on conferencecall.biz to be new. but that's one of the vibes i'm shooting for - sort of surreal people making $140,000 but with impostor syndrome

whoa, that's a great resource, thanks! i've been working in stock footage more frequently, but usually just ripping them from youtube videos since most stock footage sites want people to pay for some crazy reason

i realize there's no point in looking at this thread because i post the same shit on my tumblr / twitter, but for once i have something on here that you can't already find elsewhere. i was asked by 15 Folds to make something on the theme of Evolution for March, and although they asked me not to "post anything on my own networks" i'm going to be bad to the bone and go ahead and post it since making it pretty much ruined my day off and it's one of my favorite things i've worked on in a long time.

en i see kay i'll get to wacha soon! i had a deadline on the 15 folds things and i wanted to make sure i had enough time to do it justice, but wacha is next!

eh, i may take out the square thing at the end. it was supposed to represent the increasing of distance from the bird in each cycle - the bird spawns a mutant which grows to twice its size then eats it, and then the camera draws back as it nears the looping frame so that the viewer thinks (or is supposed to think) that the birds are getting bigger and bigger as the loops continue. but taking a breather from it after spending all day working on it, i'm not sure that makes any sense

oh, i don't know. depends on which perspective you're using. i don't know much about it (or any good guesses on the future of tech in general) but if GFYs really are much smaller than GIFs and can handle more colors and higher resolutions, it could be a better file format for the purposes of most people. Almost everyone just uses a GIF to extract a clip from a longer video, anyway, so if there's a new way to do it that looks better, people would use it. GFY's success might just come down to compatibility with existing browsers and devices and apps. GIFs are supported on nearly everything (except fucking facebook and twitter, sigh) which is a large part of their success.

there's a comparatively tiny community of people who are interested in making GIFs from scratch, or by taking a short clip of video and manipulating it significantly, and within that, an even smaller portion of people who don't mind or even embrace the GIFs limitations (256 colors max, having to keep the frame count down for the viewer's practical purposes). having those limitations can be creatively beneficial sometimes because it forces you to be as economical as possible. but for the most part, i'm sure the more creative GIFmakers wouldn't mind switching to a more efficient format that can handle whatever they do. i know there's quite a few times where i had to drastically reduce the quality of a GIF (either by cutting out lots of frames or dropping the color quality significantly) in order to get it under a certain file size, and in those situations i would have been really happy if photoshop had a Save As GFY option that would have served my purposes!

Right on. Maybe they need a GFY option that further constricts you to the gif color pallette limitations, for old time's sake...
