― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 20 November 2013 17:20 (twelve years ago)
You might be part of a tiny percentage of the global population, who have much, much more than the rest. But that's a tiny percentage of a huge actual number. So you can still live your entire life without ever meeting the people outside of your percentage.
So it's going to be extremely difficult for you to appreciate the fact (and it is a fact) of what that jpg calls your 'good fortune' or 'blessedness' in the same way that you understand facts such as 'sun comes up, sun goes down' and 'I am hungry' and 'this grass is green with yellower patches'.
That isn't necessarily the same as ignorance. Or I dunno. Is it?
― cardamon, Thursday, 21 November 2013 19:06 (twelve years ago)
And of course, one would rather question if the global wealth gap is down to 'fortune'. Is there no human willpower anywhere in the situation's emergence? Like maybe people setting up trade deals or invading other countries.

http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/9441/w4gi.jpg"You do a lot of things with a book and a bottle," Headley says. "It's known as the book-and-bottle routine." Cruise, he says, would instruct Headley to speak to a book, telling it to stand up, or to sit down, or otherwise to move somewhere.
"You do the same with the bottle. You talk to it. You do it with an ashtray too," he says. "You tell the ashtray, 'Sit in that chair.' Then you actually go over and put the ashtray on the chair. Then you tell the ashtray, 'Thank you.' Then you do the same thing with the bottle, and the book. And you do this for hours and hours."

Grab a rock and throw it into the water.
- okay, done
Did it make a big splash?
- Yes.
Now sorry to it.
- Sorry.
Did it go back to the way it was before?
- Hold on a sec.
- Wait just one more –
- Yes, it went back to the way it was before.
Do you understand?

Uh, they're very similar. I was going to say it's an assonant rhyme, but it's actually much closer than just that. The only difference is the voiced vs the unvoiced sibilant.
