one of my bands was recently on this podcast out of Chicago, just starting up (mostly jazz & singer/songwriters so far) but i thought it was a nice mix of interview + live performance: http://www.facebook.com/resonantradio

I think there's probably just an overabundance of podcasts now, which is why some just get overlooked or lost even if they're good or have the potential to be. Nerdist episodes with musicians are usually pretty good, even if they don't get into the process very much. Hardwick and the guys don't get anguished about how to talk to musicians, though, like Maron will. They're just treated like any other guest for the most part.

I've heard a few of those but the guy from Hawaii kept going on about lame punk bands
― I got the glares, the mutterings, the snarls (President Keyes), Friday, 15 November 2013 19:25 (twelve years ago)
I like the interviews on the Combat Jack podcast--especially the one with Just Blaze and Dame Dash going at each other

Kreative Kontrol is relatively decent (the Howe Gelb, Ian Svenonius, Thurston, Albini, and Greil Marcus episodes are good), though I wish the host was less reverential and more about process. http://vishkhanna.com/kreative-kontrol/

Ilx's own underrated aerosmith would be great.
I second this, let's draft him.
Hardwick and the guys don't get anguished about how to talk to musicians, though, like Maron will.
TBH those guys should anguish a little more. Not to Maron levels, but just the constant stream of shrill wackiness is exhausting.

true. i love them but i can't listen all the time
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 16 November 2013 05:48 (twelve years ago)
I'm listening to one of the Shortwave episodes, the Grant Lee Phillips podcast mentioned above. That dude has THE FUCKING BEST radio/podcast voice.
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 19 November 2013 18:46 (twelve years ago)
Man, the ad Maron did for Adam & Eve during the Marino episode. "Accessorize your emotional avoidance during sex... AdamAndEve.com!"
― alan watts, he made me hot (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Tuesday, 10 December 2013 04:27 (twelve years ago)
the yakov smirnoff one is surprisingly great so far!
― festival culture (Jordan), Thursday, 12 December 2013 17:58 (twelve years ago)
too bad Maron isn't with it enough to ask him about his meme-ification
― I got the glares, the mutterings, the snarls (President Keyes), Thursday, 12 December 2013 19:11 (twelve years ago)
lol at Maron's grasp of Russian history "So you were there through the end of Khrushchev, Brezhnev and...Yeltsin?"
― I got the glares, the mutterings, the snarls (President Keyes), Thursday, 12 December 2013 19:15 (twelve years ago)
I don't think I've ever heard Smirnoff talk out of character, kinda looking forward to that one.
― alan watts, he made me hot (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Thursday, 12 December 2013 19:23 (twelve years ago)
i am so far behind, was just listening to the Natasha Lyonne one at lunch. finally heard the revelations about his relationship that he'd been hinting at.

Yakov Smirnoff ep is one of the best I've heard in a while.
― Immediate Follower (NA), Tuesday, 24 December 2013 15:12 (twelve years ago)
Uh except for the lame pseudo-psychological stuff at the end.
― Immediate Follower (NA), Tuesday, 24 December 2013 15:17 (twelve years ago)
smirnoff was good until the last third.
will ferrell was a B-: maron has too much of a crush on him to ask any real questions, and it mostly just felt like a long Letterman interview with a star.
― sean gramophone, Tuesday, 24 December 2013 15:32 (twelve years ago)
will ferrell was a bucktooth emoticon?
― socki (s1ocki), Tuesday, 24 December 2013 15:41 (twelve years ago)
i liked that one. ferrell has such control of his comedic instrument—his voice—its kind of amazing to listen to him just go in and out of being funny
all the stuff about his dad, and the advice his dad gave him, was kinda fascinating imo
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 24 December 2013 16:00 (twelve years ago)
the lou barlow interview is great. especially if you're a sebadoh/dinosaur jr fan. i feel for him, he seems like a anxious troubled soul tbh. i had no idea he recently had a meth addiction. yikes.
― subaltern 8 (Michael B), Tuesday, 24 December 2013 16:03 (twelve years ago)
maron should really read get around to reading "our band could be your life" if hes going to be interviewing 80s indie rockers
― subaltern 8 (Michael B), Tuesday, 24 December 2013 16:04 (twelve years ago)
Yeah, and the whole bit about people at the Groundlings being "I give myself three years to get onto SNL" and "I will only improvise with this person and that person."
(xp to VG)
― Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Tuesday, 24 December 2013 16:05 (twelve years ago)
lolz in the Andy Samberg interview when it becomes clear Maron has no idea who Joanna Newsom is: "So she's a classical musician?"
― I got the glares, the mutterings, the snarls (President Keyes), Monday, 6 January 2014 12:08 (twelve years ago)
tbf I've seen Joanna Newsom in concert and I still feel I have no idea who she is
― Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 6 January 2014 14:39 (twelve years ago)
No one does.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 6 January 2014 14:42 (twelve years ago)
finally caught an episode of his TV show - quite underwhelmed tbh but maybe it gets better as it progresses
― licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Monday, 6 January 2014 15:40 (twelve years ago)
I watched the whole run on Netflix in a couple of days recently. It's clearly cut from the same cloth as his standup and his podcast monologues and it's definitely an achievement in the sense that the show seems 100% reflective of his voice and worldview.
I guess everyone's mileage will vary on whether that's a good thing or a bad thing, and I do go through phases of WTF burnout myself sometimes, but I ended up liking the show a good deal more than I expected to after the first episode or two. Maron's acting can be a bit distractingly stiff here and there but overall I'm looking forward to the second season.

If no end else will state the obvious, the Artie interview was terrific.
― Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 7 January 2014 08:47 (twelve years ago)
i have it in my little pile of "I need to listen to these" - interested to hear that convo
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 7 January 2014 16:19 (twelve years ago)
yakov smirnoff thriving in branson, mo now seems completely appropriate

Did anyone else like the Phil Stutz interview?
― a lake full of ancient spices (los blue jeans), Wednesday, 8 January 2014 02:24 (twelve years ago)
I thought it was great. Took a while to get Hank Azaria's Phil Stutz impression out of my head so I could take the interview seriously, though. Was a little sad for Paul Gilmartin to hear at the end of the Artie Lange episode that he's going to do more interviews like the Phil Stutz one, but hopefully he didn't mean he'd be doing more interviews with therapists.
― Bryan, Wednesday, 8 January 2014 06:51 (twelve years ago)
i liked the autobio part of it a ton, a little less so near the end when he started talking about his book, but whatever.
― festival culture (Jordan), Wednesday, 8 January 2014 14:28 (twelve years ago)
Marc Maron got turned on to Hawkwind by Ty Segall. That's my first revelation from the Artie Lange ep.
― barranca jagger (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Wednesday, 8 January 2014 14:41 (twelve years ago)
from his twitter account it looks like he got In Search of Space and Hall of the Mountain Grill.
― jbn, Wednesday, 8 January 2014 15:28 (twelve years ago)
I'm surprised I haven't run into him at Permanent Records yet.
― Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 9 January 2014 01:59 (twelve years ago)
Fucking Artie, man. I can't even imagine what he'd be like on cocaine.
― barranca jagger (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Thursday, 9 January 2014 02:46 (twelve years ago)
was not really into the patrick stickles interview, but i loved the moment where marc, trying to connect on a basic human level, asked him something like "what do you like to do? don't you eat food that makes you happy?" that's when his lack of research pays off, just wish it would have led to a deeper discussion.
― festival culture (Jordan), Friday, 17 January 2014 17:14 (twelve years ago)
Stickles is horrible so I skipped it.

ha, yeah, the "do you food that makes you happy?" question was actually great. dude wouldn't go anywhere with it, though...
i felt sorry for the poor guy but a lot of it was like a horrible phone call from an old college friend who's gone off the deep end and wants to be sure you know he's read Nietschze
― brio, Friday, 17 January 2014 21:58 (twelve years ago)
Psyched for Harry Dean Stanton on Thursday.
― bizarro gazzara, Monday, 20 January 2014 12:55 (twelve years ago)
Wow at this HDS episode and Maron's inability to process anyone who isn't jumping out of his pants to tell Hollywood drug stories on a podcast
― I got the glares, the mutterings, the snarls (President Keyes), Thursday, 23 January 2014 12:14 (twelve years ago)
if HDS is 1/8 as awkward on this as he was on DLM a few months ago, Maron must have had his work cut out for him
(no dis on Stanton, just the publicist booking him on podcasts should have realised how badly it was going to go)
― (D1CK$) (sic), Thursday, 23 January 2014 13:17 (twelve years ago)
He spends about half the podcast bemoaning his subject's reticence and asking "Maybe I should have prepared some questions." No, man, don't put yourself out.
― I got the glares, the mutterings, the snarls (President Keyes), Thursday, 23 January 2014 13:50 (twelve years ago)
HDS actually gave him quite a bit, but not the "So picture this: me and Jack Nicholson are in Latvia with six hookers and a pound of hash" stories that Maron wanted
