What do you make of the oft repeated claim that men are over represented in dangerous employment and the military? Legit or just whining?

Mordy , Friday, 15 November 2013 17:03 (twelve years ago)

Over-represented in most authority positions.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 15 November 2013 17:05 (twelve years ago)

I dunno, don't the military and dangerous employment (security/construction/machines) have a history of being resistant to letting women in?

cardamon, Friday, 15 November 2013 17:08 (twelve years ago)

I wd broadly agree with the idea that when feminism (or any identity politics) loses contact with class (and general economic) awareness, we have a problem, that might be relevant

cardamon, Friday, 15 November 2013 17:10 (twelve years ago)

u guys shd start a thread for this im not joking

lag∞n, Friday, 15 November 2013 17:10 (twelve years ago)

sucks how men are so overrepresented in stressful positions of power and authority :(

socki (s1ocki), Friday, 15 November 2013 17:10 (twelve years ago)

this is for making fun of fedoras

lag∞n, Friday, 15 November 2013 17:11 (twelve years ago)

If for example feminism was saying that women have it difficult and men have it easy, that wd ignore unemployed men, male victims of war, male victims of poverty. Obviously. But I don't think feminism is saying this, it's usually saying that men have it less difficult than women do, not that they have it easy.

cardamon, Friday, 15 November 2013 17:11 (twelve years ago)

srsly stop

lag∞n, Friday, 15 November 2013 17:11 (twelve years ago)

i don't really care about MRA movement except that if this is the only thread that's going to be bumped on this sleepy friday than we might as well talk about something that might be controversial.

Mordy , Friday, 15 November 2013 18:30 (twelve years ago)

like how many days in a row can we complain about fedoras? don't u guys get bored???

Mordy , Friday, 15 November 2013 18:31 (twelve years ago)

max, Friday, 15 November 2013 18:31 (twelve years ago)

the "rights" part of mra is the really objectionable bit. it should be the MIA ("issues") movement. live fast die young bad men do it well.

Mordy , Friday, 15 November 2013 18:34 (twelve years ago)

Dunno bout controversial, but I found this very interesting:

deems im not sure what your feelings about reddit/mra/whatever actually are, and why you feel it necessary to have feelings about them?

Nilmar Honorato da Silva, Monday, 18 November 2013 11:44 (twelve years ago)

Have no feelings about em, as such, but as a bundle or as separate topics they seem to be the type of trigger (ever more common) for ilx smug triteness nahmsayn

bachmansplain jenny turner overtalk (darraghmac), Monday, 18 November 2013 11:52 (twelve years ago)

I mean id consider startin an mra thread but if im honest it would be more to annoy the ppl that it would annoy than i) to discuss mra or whatever (i dont think ilx is capable any longer of an interesting discussion on this or similar grey-area/devils advocate or w/e topics without the discussion itself being attacked and ii) i drgaf either

bachmansplain jenny turner overtalk (darraghmac), Monday, 18 November 2013 11:55 (twelve years ago)

sure it's an easy target and they will always attract rote dismissals, but there's nothing wrong with enjoying the content pplains is posting here right?

Nilmar Honorato da Silva, Monday, 18 November 2013 11:56 (twelve years ago)

in the ongoing kneejerk liberalism vs kneejerk lib-baiting wars i feel like one hand is washing the other

bachmansplain jenny turner overtalk (darraghmac), Monday, 18 November 2013 11:58 (twelve years ago)

i agree with Mordy that there are interesting issues raised by MRA but i feel like most of those issues are fairly easily explained and so the conv doesn't go much further than that

thus spake darraghthustra (Noodle Vague), Monday, 18 November 2013 11:58 (twelve years ago)

i mean i dunno if we wanna look at how patriarchy diminishes men too then Middlemarch was written a good long while ago i don't think the MRA guys have discoverd a new planet now i shd get this off the reddit lulz thread

thus spake darraghthustra (Noodle Vague), Monday, 18 November 2013 11:59 (twelve years ago)

mra is clearly a piece of shit though, said without knowing anything about the 'movement' beyond what pplains and others post here, but simply that for those relatively very few instances in which men suffer while an equivalent woman would not, it is illogical and grotesque to co-opt the language of minoritarian rights rather than the general right

Nilmar Honorato da Silva, Monday, 18 November 2013 12:01 (twelve years ago)

You couldnt even bring yrself to use a proposed 'matriarchy' as a zingy absurdist example could you

Can u see what they make us give

bachmansplain jenny turner overtalk (darraghmac), Monday, 18 November 2013 12:02 (twelve years ago)

Theres prob loads of examples where co-opting the sufferings and injustices existing in the world is p gross, mra movement the most egregious of these ito widespread examples, agreed

bachmansplain jenny turner overtalk (darraghmac), Monday, 18 November 2013 12:05 (twelve years ago)

wd you say you were against discussion of "issues" in general, or mainly objecting to the self-congratulatory tone of some of these discussions within ILX/the broader social context? given that the discussion of issues has the potential to generate some entertaining donnybrooks given the right circumstances how does that sit with your broader pro bust-up stance?

facebook, not reddit, but fits in with the men's rights ridicule itt. This crossed by path because a facebook friend of mine commented on it. NSFW, btw.

these are vital devils advocate issues and we cannot let vicious attacks by the likes of lagoon divert us from them

30 ch'lopping days left to umas (darraghmac), Monday, 18 November 2013 15:28 (twelve years ago)

i think there are things to discuss about being a man - like how you relate to other men, how you feel about expressions of masculinity in society, how you relate to your father, or your son, etc - that are certainly worthy of discussion and not just bc they might inflame a clusterfuck. some of this will touch on things MRA are interested in - like whether men will submit themselves to physical harm or dmg bc of machismo or something similar. obv you can reduce any gender issue for anyone down to - omg the patriarchy blows - but some thinks are best discussed in nuance.

ot but i was just reminded of this and it's one of the most beautiful things i've ever heard (lol, 'beauty), rav soloveitchik has a comment on the part of the torah where potiphar's wife is trying to seduce joseph. it says that he looked out the window and saw the face of his father and that gave him the strength to resist the seduction. soleveitchik explains that he actually saw his own reflection in the glass, and saw in his features the features of his father. that it wasn't the vision of his father that dissuaded him from sinning, but rather the recognition that the lessons of his father were written into his very own physical features.

i guess i'm mentioning this bc i think (and this is true about bly as well) there are important things to discuss about being a man that aren't about minimizing feminist concerns, or stealing minority rhetoric to make yourself feel like a victim. the victim discourses are so asinine anyway, why replicate them? i'd rather talk about something new. obv this isn't the right thread for an ongoing conversation along this nature, but i think threads like this, or the man-blogging thread, have monopolized "man talk" such that even suggesting that men might have specific issues they want to discuss (at the very least we can talk about our prostates) becomes laughable.

Mordy , Monday, 18 November 2013 17:33 (twelve years ago)
