so when you're shopping for it in a rack filled with coats from other brands you know who made it without having to delve inside
also because fashion has weird rules & traditions and this is just one of them.

Just the thought process... "Fedora? Check. Smart overcoat? I'm wid it, best make sure people can see the label so they know this is the real deal. What else? Hmmm... maybe jeans and a band t-shirt, just to really y'know, nail that Mad Men look"
yeah it seems distinct from the cognitive dissonance caused by seeing a kid in a suit or some other fully adult look. like, the combination of old fashioned masculinity and their adolescent arrested development causes a mish-mash that makes it look like a bad costume, playing at being something both they and everyone who sees them knows they are not.
what's especially interesting is that it seems to no longer be a derivative look but kind of it's own "thing"--maybe if you really wanted to analyze it more deeply you'd say they are laying claim to a certain style from a past era but only just enough to show they are not fully identifying with it.

was going to posit the idea that men's rights activists ought to be men

xpost: almost as if the very artificiality of the costume is meant to highlight their supposed authenticity and free-thinkingness.

certain Fedora dudes seem like they might've been duster dudes back in the 90s
― gbx, Friday, 15 November 2013 16:05 (twelve years ago)

Maybe it is a reaction to the cargo shorts-and-flip flop look of post-Margarita-ville alpha male jerks everywhere.
― Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 15 November 2013 16:16 (twelve years ago)
these guys def wear cargo shorts too, prob not flip flops tho because theyre too uptight
― lag∞n, Friday, 15 November 2013 16:18 (twelve years ago)
i have no real probs with people who dress solely for comfort tbh
― a strident purist when it comes to band-related shirts (Noodle Vague), Friday, 15 November 2013 16:19 (twelve years ago)
are cargo pockets comfortable
― lag∞n, Friday, 15 November 2013 16:21 (twelve years ago)
Yes. But also, I fear, a reaction to the look of tracksuits and streetwear, based on various images I've come across which contrasted 'swag' with 'class'
― cardamon, Friday, 15 November 2013 16:21 (twelve years ago)
Yeah plus that's all jock gear. They get all the chicks. Also hence "I'm always being friendzoned/assholes always get the girls/I gotta step up my asshole game" thought.
I'm really just glad reddit wasn't around when i was an angsty nerdy atheist teen.

Think it's the emphasis on claimed intelligence rather than claimed creativity that's dodgy w/this look
― cardamon, Friday, 15 November 2013 16:29 (twelve years ago)
alas, the world is full of ppl who think they're smarter than they really are
― Mordy , Friday, 15 November 2013 16:31 (twelve years ago)
how are you supposed to know if youre not smart enough to know you know
― lag∞n, Friday, 15 November 2013 16:33 (twelve years ago)
i know i'm not as smart as i think i am

the only solution is to assume youre the smartest person in the world then you can be sure you arent as smart as you think... unless

i seen a young man in a fedora in college today but i think he was a performing arts student. also i decided to make an effort not to judge people by their hats but by the content of their characters

i find that chatting w/ very very bright ppl is always good for reminding myself how unclever i am

btway upthread darragh didn't like it when I said MRA was worse than Satanism, is the following relevant:

i judge people strictly on their: vertical leap, gpa
― lag∞n, Friday, 15 November 2013 16:38 (twelve years ago)
cardamon, do you believe that participation in the MRA movement contributes to rape in the western world?
― Mordy , Friday, 15 November 2013 16:40 (twelve years ago)
Dunno.
― cardamon, Friday, 15 November 2013 16:43 (twelve years ago)
If I was going to assert that as a definite, I'd want to look at worthwhile research.
― cardamon, Friday, 15 November 2013 16:44 (twelve years ago)
its def firmly aligned w rape culture
― lag∞n, Friday, 15 November 2013 16:44 (twelve years ago)
xp I think it definitely contributes to people being hostile towards rape victims both online and off-line, and perhaps that culture could contribute to higher instances of rape or lower instances of conviction for rapists?
― cardamon, Friday, 15 November 2013 16:45 (twelve years ago)
If that ^ reddit comment I linked is not someone faking, you definitely have someone who endorses rape culture right there
― cardamon, Friday, 15 November 2013 16:46 (twelve years ago)
MRA is 100% bullshit and has nothing of value to offer anyone.
― Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 15 November 2013 16:49 (twelve years ago)
Adam, yeah, I've seen nothing in it for me. I've got time for some of the people who might see something in it, or be drawn to it. As with every set of ideas though
― cardamon, Friday, 15 November 2013 16:50 (twelve years ago)
that does appear to be the consensus adam_b - surely if we're going to discuss MRA tho there's something more we can bring to the conversation than mere opprobrium?
― Mordy , Friday, 15 November 2013 16:51 (twelve years ago)
i've defended some elements of the men's movement (partic. robert bly) on ilx before but rarely get takers. reddit MRA is kinda the abhorrent vulgar personification of a group of disparate ideas that may have more or less merit ime.
― Mordy , Friday, 15 November 2013 16:52 (twelve years ago)
I wonder if there's a way to have a sophisticated conversation about "men's issues" that is not dismissive.
― Mordy , Friday, 15 November 2013 16:54 (twelve years ago)
I'd hope so and would be a 'taker' (for you, Mordy)
― cardamon, Friday, 15 November 2013 16:56 (twelve years ago)
i dont think the mens movement and the mens rights movement are the same thing tho
― lag∞n, Friday, 15 November 2013 16:56 (twelve years ago)
I mean, guy loses kids in custody battle because someone at some point in the process makes an assumption that the mother's would be the better home, when that isn't the case: in that specific scenario, guy has a grievance
But I wonder how often this actually happens, again something I'd want to look at the numbers for
― cardamon, Friday, 15 November 2013 16:57 (twelve years ago)
Ok yeah i hadn't heard of Robert Bly before. And yes that was a dumb statement to make. Is Bly really a MRA guy? He looks pretty interesting but yeah totally different than reddit-style stuff.

What do you make of the oft repeated claim that men are over represented in dangerous employment and the military? Legit or just whining?
― Mordy , Friday, 15 November 2013 17:03 (twelve years ago)
Over-represented in most authority positions.
― Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 15 November 2013 17:05 (twelve years ago)
I dunno, don't the military and dangerous employment (security/construction/machines) have a history of being resistant to letting women in?
― cardamon, Friday, 15 November 2013 17:08 (twelve years ago)
I wd broadly agree with the idea that when feminism (or any identity politics) loses contact with class (and general economic) awareness, we have a problem, that might be relevant
