See, even in that, I feel like some dude was just trolling.

I mean, these guys can't be real, right?

Dunno how seriously those dudes want to be taken – they remind me of teenage friends of yesteryear who'd have a belt made to look like an ammo belt or a 3D skull t-shirt. Or my own spiky tribal necklaces! But people adopting Men's Rights Activism as a look seems like it might be more dangerous in real terms than people adopting Satanism as a look.

cardamon, Friday, 15 November 2013 02:34 (twelve years ago)

I think they are more dangerous because MRA ideology just magnifies prejudices and resentments that are present in a lot of men. I just don't understand where the hats fit in.

tɹi.ʃɪp (Treeship), Friday, 15 November 2013 02:37 (twelve years ago)

golfdinger (darraghmac), Friday, 15 November 2013 02:40 (twelve years ago)

Hats = shade the eyes, make you look like someone from the old world of noir and westerns, back when people were serious = hats make you serious

cardamon, Friday, 15 November 2013 03:11 (twelve years ago)

Satanism has not actually killed anyone in the 21st century as far as I know – well, maybe a few loners have, but not as an organised ideology – whereas MRA encourages members to have opinions on things such as rape law and how to live your life

is what I would say if I were trying to dodge an assertion that MRA kids are no worse than Satan kids and we're all getting in a flap over nothing

cardamon, Friday, 15 November 2013 03:13 (twelve years ago)

If it was about looking like bogart why dont these dudes wear suits or in general become #menswear bros? Something is off about this aesthetic

It's the grasping after classic men's style, but from a position of internet-enabled immersion in the infantile, cartoons, videogames and porn (which is a kind of cartoon): also, the sedentary tendency in the information economy contributes to this distance from their hazily-seen ideals, old-school 50s men who may have seen service in a war.

All this creates the uncanny effect.

Either that or we're ascribing dodgy value systems to people based on their headwear and thus innocuous things become, to us, symptoms of a deeper malaise

cardamon, Friday, 15 November 2013 06:09 (twelve years ago)

I think my first para up there applies here, at least:

It's that pale, wobbly flesh and the coat and hat that look too big for him. And also that that looks like a real knife, although the gun is a water pistol?

a) shit, yes they are
b) yes, I'm not THAT stupid
c) seriously why do they sew a label on the cuff if it's not supposed to be there?

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Friday, 15 November 2013 15:26 (twelve years ago)

Because when you're browsing them in the store the brand is prominently displayed on the outer-facing sleeve on the rack?

mh, Friday, 15 November 2013 15:36 (twelve years ago)

so when you're shopping for it in a rack filled with coats from other brands you know who made it without having to delve inside

also because fashion has weird rules & traditions and this is just one of them.

yeah it seems distinct from the cognitive dissonance caused by seeing a kid in a suit or some other fully adult look. like, the combination of old fashioned masculinity and their adolescent arrested development causes a mish-mash that makes it look like a bad costume, playing at being something both they and everyone who sees them knows they are not.

what's especially interesting is that it seems to no longer be a derivative look but kind of it's own "thing"--maybe if you really wanted to analyze it more deeply you'd say they are laying claim to a certain style from a past era but only just enough to show they are not fully identifying with it.
