a coworker of mine showed up on halloween day with a newsboy cap on and i asked him if it was a halloween costume lol he said "but x and y said they liked my hat!" which led me to the realization that when someone says they like your hat, it basically translates to "you don't usually wear a hat, but i notice that you are wearing one now"

lol this is true, if someone who doesn't wear a hat is suddenly wearing some big noticeable (non-baseball cap) hat everything that isn't "nice hat" or "i like your hat" will sound like disapproval, including silence
