harry anderson might be the stooges of fedora nerds. harry the hat, tho, not harry stone.

that snl skit is what i was thinking about in terms of calling out the type by name, even though the type had existed long before that but maybe not identified as such afaik.

I may have mentioned this on ilx before, but once when my sister was wearing a trilby as part of her outfit, a guy approached her unsolicited at a gas station to brag that his band had once opened for Tom Waits.

a coworker of mine showed up on halloween day with a newsboy cap on and i asked him if it was a halloween costume lol he said "but x and y said they liked my hat!" which led me to the realization that when someone says they like your hat, it basically translates to "you don't usually wear a hat, but i notice that you are wearing one now"
― diamonddave85, Thursday, 7 November 2013 18:55 (twelve years ago)
I had a flat cap one winter a few years ago. It was like a newsboy, but more streamlined. I was going through a phase where I felt that I was much further into middle age than I actually am. It was kinda a "give up on life" hat.

Sometimes I wake up and I think I should start wearing a beret, but I don't do it though. One day I'm gonna though. You bet, I will have a beret on. That's ridiculous, but it's true. I always fight with wearing a beret.
― slugbuggy, Thursday, 7 November 2013 18:59 (twelve years ago)
I don't know what to do these days. Usually just go for a beanie if the weather calls for it. Seems like such a cop-out hat though. Wish I could make a cowboy hat happen. What kind of dork would that make me though?
― how's life, Thursday, 7 November 2013 19:01 (twelve years ago)
i think we still live in a culture where a woman can still wear a hat. any old hat, whatever. with a dude it's like a life choice; that's who you are now, that hat.
― slugbuggy, Thursday, 7 November 2013 19:06 (twelve years ago)
I always fight while wearing a beret

Is this because the hat 'seals you in' to a particular look?

guy fawkes mask, horse mask and football helmet all very in for 2013wtf is with the horse mask anyways? Suddenly it's all over the place. Why? Where did this crap start? The Guy Fawkes mask I assume has to do with _V Is For Vendetta_. Horse mask though? No one could find a decent Marmaduke mask, so they settled?
― Øystein, Thursday, 7 November 2013 19:34 (twelve years ago)
Because you can buy one for like $20 from Amazon and it used to have a "WTF" factor
― 乒乓, Thursday, 7 November 2013 19:35 (twelve years ago)
well that's disappointing

interesting that the least offensive (and somehow most adult seeming) choice in that list is one that even a generation or two ago would have been reserved only for young boys and athletes.

― Mordy , Thursday, 7 November 2013 21:26 (twelve years ago)
My negativity toward baseball caps has a lot to do with this guy.

― Mordy , Thursday, 7 November 2013 21:38 (twelve years ago)
did you wear a yarmulke under the kangol
― mh, Thursday, 7 November 2013 22:34 (twelve years ago)
seems like a philosophically sound way to justify wearing two hats, feel like this could give you extra hat cred
― mh, Thursday, 7 November 2013 22:35 (twelve years ago)
i did not bc i was going through a not wearing yarmulke phase. i'm recently back into wearing a yarmulke and i mostly wear it under my phillies cap
― Mordy , Thursday, 7 November 2013 22:43 (twelve years ago)
do you wear yarmulke b2f like SLJ and his kangol
