Yeah I think that hat and that beard are just things that were fashionable among people who might go on the internet, and some of these people were also members of certain groups on the internet.

Paedophiles are also supposed to wear fedoras and neckbeards according to the mythology, as are legalistic friend-zone disputants. These groups being lumped together under the fedora is what makes me think the hat might not be a good category or reference point.

Also I think it's relevant to this discussion that, AFAIK, average age of a reddit poster is 28. If all these people on reddit were just teenagers, I don't think I'd feel it very pressing to talk about them/attack them

i guess so djp. i think there is a difference between saying "i am white and male but ______ some women and black people are better off than me why should i have to feel bad huh" and "i cry tears of hilarity in the faces of all minority groups". the former is trying to appeal to the logic minorities use to describe their own oppression while the latter pretends this logic has no historical origin, and is just taking it as a starting point to describe their own myopic, self-pitying worldview. it seems like a parody, i guess
