I think there's a state called the equivalent of "Mexico State" or something, right? Like where the capital is located? That's about all I got right now.

would also guess 90% of australians really dont know how many states australia has because what IS a state and what is a territory and who the hell knows?

South Australia bothers me because

1.) There is already a "South" state, NSW.

2.) There is Western Australia and Northern Territory (which may or may not be a state.) Having "Southern" in its name could even opened itself to hella bunch of Southern Cross opportunities. But now, it's South Australia, kinda like South America but not really.

South Dakota, South Carolina?

Northern Dakota, Northern Carolina?

northern california, southern california, centralern california

i can't explain why, but I'd say -ern is more of a broad area of a location while straight up North This or South That is a proper name.

So maybe it's West Australia that needs to get in line, but still.
