WTF is going to end like Lost, with Lorne Michaels ushering Maron into a room of pure light

Light goes out, Maron's standing on abandoned stage at SNL which has just been cancelled.

Looking forward to this one. Knoxville's punchline in this anecdote is killer.

:D yay
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 26 October 2013 05:57 (twelve years ago)
Ugh, this fucking Booker T. Jones interview is excruciating and cringeworthy. It's not Jones' fault; he's a fascinating interview, and brings new perspectives to old stories, but ffs Marc, why did you ask him if he thought Otis Redding's death was part of a mafia plot?
― Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 15 November 2013 16:10 (twelve years ago)
the last couple weeks have been on the boring side, but i liked Booker T. got a little choked up when he talked about sending all his personal brass instruments (no idea he did a senior college recital on trombone!) to New Orleans post-Katrina.
― festival culture (Jordan), Friday, 15 November 2013 16:21 (twelve years ago)
today's show is pretty dark
― I got the glares, the mutterings, the snarls (President Keyes), Friday, 15 November 2013 17:42 (twelve years ago)
yeah, Booker T was a really botched interview, shame because Booker T was so open and relaxed and likeable. Could have been great.
― brio, Friday, 15 November 2013 17:57 (twelve years ago)
I really wish someone besides Marc could get these longform podcast interviews with musicians. They're lots of fun but rarely does he make them better.
― EZ Snappin, Friday, 15 November 2013 18:00 (twelve years ago)
Yeah - totally agree. Would be cool if it was musician host who could relate to other musicians the way Maron does with comics at his best. Ilx's own underrated aerosmith would be great.
― brio, Friday, 15 November 2013 18:04 (twelve years ago)
Low Times seems like the best candidate to fill that gap but they're so irregular, even with three people doing the interviews, and they interview a lot of people I just don't care about. But the Guy Picciotto interview they did was great.I also like when Jake Fogelnest has musicians on the Fogelnest Files, his recent episodes with Kim Fowley and Don Bolles were both amazing. But he's pretty invested in a specific arena of weird LA rockers.
― Immediate Follower (NA), Friday, 15 November 2013 18:05 (twelve years ago)
Maybe after the Best Show ends, Tom Scharpling will do more Low Times stuff. His interview with GE Smith was really interesting and I bet the Dave Wyndorf episode is great too.
― Immediate Follower (NA), Friday, 15 November 2013 18:08 (twelve years ago)
I move we get Sheila E to start a long form musician interview podcast because she knows her shit, is super personable, and just generally awesome.
― Johnny Fever, Friday, 15 November 2013 18:16 (twelve years ago)
xpostWyndorf one was the best Low Times for me - they have that Jersey bond.Have to say I'm generally not a fan of the non-Tom interviewers on Low Times, though the Fugazi one was really good.
Thanks for the tip - will check out Fogelnest - Bolles and Fowley and general weirdo LA all sound great.
― brio, Friday, 15 November 2013 18:17 (twelve years ago)
Maggie is good people, but tbh I don't listen to Low Times a lot.
― Johnny Fever, Friday, 15 November 2013 18:19 (twelve years ago)
Fogelnest's shtick irritates me more than Maron's but he does have better taste.
― polyphonic, Friday, 15 November 2013 18:20 (twelve years ago)
Yeah the musician interviews are a new thing on Fogelnest Files, usually it's him and comedians making fun of dumb internet stuff, which is def not for everyone (and not always for me). I really hope he shifts his focus more over to music because he seems very knowledgeable.
― Immediate Follower (NA), Friday, 15 November 2013 18:24 (twelve years ago)
I'm sure maggie and daniel of Low Times are nice folks - it's more their guest choices aren't really of huge interest to me
― brio, Friday, 15 November 2013 18:28 (twelve years ago)

― Immediate Follower (NA), Friday, 15 November 2013 18:29 (twelve years ago)
Earwolf had that music interview show hosted by Grant Lee Phillips but they cancelled it due to lack of interest.
― I got the glares, the mutterings, the snarls (President Keyes), Friday, 15 November 2013 18:41 (twelve years ago)
They also have Har Mar Superstar interviewing people but the one I listened to (Matt Sweeney) was pretty annoying.
― Immediate Follower (NA), Friday, 15 November 2013 18:44 (twelve years ago)
They cancelled that one a few weeks back, along with their hip hop show with Jeff Weiss and Nocando.
― I got the glares, the mutterings, the snarls (President Keyes), Friday, 15 November 2013 18:57 (twelve years ago)
one of my bands was recently on this podcast out of Chicago, just starting up (mostly jazz & singer/songwriters so far) but i thought it was a nice mix of interview + live performance: http://www.facebook.com/resonantradio
― festival culture (Jordan), Friday, 15 November 2013 18:57 (twelve years ago)
I think there's probably just an overabundance of podcasts now, which is why some just get overlooked or lost even if they're good or have the potential to be. Nerdist episodes with musicians are usually pretty good, even if they don't get into the process very much. Hardwick and the guys don't get anguished about how to talk to musicians, though, like Maron will. They're just treated like any other guest for the most part.
― Johnny Fever, Friday, 15 November 2013 19:08 (twelve years ago)
I've heard a few of those but the guy from Hawaii kept going on about lame punk bands
― I got the glares, the mutterings, the snarls (President Keyes), Friday, 15 November 2013 19:25 (twelve years ago)
I like the interviews on the Combat Jack podcast--especially the one with Just Blaze and Dame Dash going at each other
― I got the glares, the mutterings, the snarls (President Keyes), Friday, 15 November 2013 19:29 (twelve years ago)
Kreative Kontrol is relatively decent (the Howe Gelb, Ian Svenonius, Thurston, Albini, and Greil Marcus episodes are good), though I wish the host was less reverential and more about process. http://vishkhanna.com/kreative-kontrol/
― Elvis Telecom, Friday, 15 November 2013 22:20 (twelve years ago)
Ilx's own underrated aerosmith would be great.
I second this, let's draft him.
Hardwick and the guys don't get anguished about how to talk to musicians, though, like Maron will.
TBH those guys should anguish a little more. Not to Maron levels, but just the constant stream of shrill wackiness is exhausting.

true. i love them but i can't listen all the time
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 16 November 2013 05:48 (twelve years ago)
I'm listening to one of the Shortwave episodes, the Grant Lee Phillips podcast mentioned above. That dude has THE FUCKING BEST radio/podcast voice.
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 19 November 2013 18:46 (twelve years ago)
Man, the ad Maron did for Adam & Eve during the Marino episode. "Accessorize your emotional avoidance during sex... AdamAndEve.com!"
― alan watts, he made me hot (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Tuesday, 10 December 2013 04:27 (twelve years ago)
the yakov smirnoff one is surprisingly great so far!
― festival culture (Jordan), Thursday, 12 December 2013 17:58 (twelve years ago)
too bad Maron isn't with it enough to ask him about his meme-ification
― I got the glares, the mutterings, the snarls (President Keyes), Thursday, 12 December 2013 19:11 (twelve years ago)
lol at Maron's grasp of Russian history "So you were there through the end of Khrushchev, Brezhnev and...Yeltsin?"
― I got the glares, the mutterings, the snarls (President Keyes), Thursday, 12 December 2013 19:15 (twelve years ago)
I don't think I've ever heard Smirnoff talk out of character, kinda looking forward to that one.
― alan watts, he made me hot (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Thursday, 12 December 2013 19:23 (twelve years ago)
i am so far behind, was just listening to the Natasha Lyonne one at lunch. finally heard the revelations about his relationship that he'd been hinting at.

Yakov Smirnoff ep is one of the best I've heard in a while.
― Immediate Follower (NA), Tuesday, 24 December 2013 15:12 (twelve years ago)
Uh except for the lame pseudo-psychological stuff at the end.
― Immediate Follower (NA), Tuesday, 24 December 2013 15:17 (twelve years ago)
smirnoff was good until the last third.
will ferrell was a B-: maron has too much of a crush on him to ask any real questions, and it mostly just felt like a long Letterman interview with a star.
― sean gramophone, Tuesday, 24 December 2013 15:32 (twelve years ago)
will ferrell was a bucktooth emoticon?
― socki (s1ocki), Tuesday, 24 December 2013 15:41 (twelve years ago)
i liked that one. ferrell has such control of his comedic instrument—his voice—its kind of amazing to listen to him just go in and out of being funny
all the stuff about his dad, and the advice his dad gave him, was kinda fascinating imo
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 24 December 2013 16:00 (twelve years ago)
the lou barlow interview is great. especially if you're a sebadoh/dinosaur jr fan. i feel for him, he seems like a anxious troubled soul tbh. i had no idea he recently had a meth addiction. yikes.
― subaltern 8 (Michael B), Tuesday, 24 December 2013 16:03 (twelve years ago)
maron should really read get around to reading "our band could be your life" if hes going to be interviewing 80s indie rockers
― subaltern 8 (Michael B), Tuesday, 24 December 2013 16:04 (twelve years ago)
Yeah, and the whole bit about people at the Groundlings being "I give myself three years to get onto SNL" and "I will only improvise with this person and that person."
(xp to VG)
― Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Tuesday, 24 December 2013 16:05 (twelve years ago)
lolz in the Andy Samberg interview when it becomes clear Maron has no idea who Joanna Newsom is: "So she's a classical musician?"
