Ugh, this fucking Booker T. Jones interview is excruciating and cringeworthy. It's not Jones' fault; he's a fascinating interview, and brings new perspectives to old stories, but ffs Marc, why did you ask him if he thought Otis Redding's death was part of a mafia plot?

the last couple weeks have been on the boring side, but i liked Booker T. got a little choked up when he talked about sending all his personal brass instruments (no idea he did a senior college recital on trombone!) to New Orleans post-Katrina.

today's show is pretty dark

yeah, Booker T was a really botched interview, shame because Booker T was so open and relaxed and likeable. Could have been great.

I really wish someone besides Marc could get these longform podcast interviews with musicians. They're lots of fun but rarely does he make them better.

Yeah - totally agree. Would be cool if it was musician host who could relate to other musicians the way Maron does with comics at his best. Ilx's own underrated aerosmith would be great.

Low Times seems like the best candidate to fill that gap but they're so irregular, even with three people doing the interviews, and they interview a lot of people I just don't care about. But the Guy Picciotto interview they did was great.
I also like when Jake Fogelnest has musicians on the Fogelnest Files, his recent episodes with Kim Fowley and Don Bolles were both amazing. But he's pretty invested in a specific arena of weird LA rockers.

Maybe after the Best Show ends, Tom Scharpling will do more Low Times stuff. His interview with GE Smith was really interesting and I bet the Dave Wyndorf episode is great too.

I move we get Sheila E to start a long form musician interview podcast because she knows her shit, is super personable, and just generally awesome.

Wyndorf one was the best Low Times for me - they have that Jersey bond.
Have to say I'm generally not a fan of the non-Tom interviewers on Low Times, though the Fugazi one was really good.

Thanks for the tip - will check out Fogelnest - Bolles and Fowley and general weirdo LA all sound great.

Maggie is good people, but tbh I don't listen to Low Times a lot.

Fogelnest's shtick irritates me more than Maron's but he does have better taste.

Yeah the musician interviews are a new thing on Fogelnest Files, usually it's him and comedians making fun of dumb internet stuff, which is def not for everyone (and not always for me). I really hope he shifts his focus more over to music because he seems very knowledgeable.

I'm sure maggie and daniel of Low Times are nice folks - it's more their guest choices aren't really of huge interest to me

Earwolf had that music interview show hosted by Grant Lee Phillips but they cancelled it due to lack of interest.

They also have Har Mar Superstar interviewing people but the one I listened to (Matt Sweeney) was pretty annoying.

They cancelled that one a few weeks back, along with their hip hop show with Jeff Weiss and Nocando.

I think there's probably just an overabundance of podcasts now, which is why some just get overlooked or lost even if they're good or have the potential to be. Nerdist episodes with musicians are usually pretty good, even if they don't get into the process very much. Hardwick and the guys don't get anguished about how to talk to musicians, though, like Maron will. They're just treated like any other guest for the most part.

I've heard a few of those but the guy from Hawaii kept going on about lame punk bands

I like the interviews on the Combat Jack podcast--especially the one with Just Blaze and Dame Dash going at each other

Kreative Kontrol is relatively decent (the Howe Gelb, Ian Svenonius, Thurston, Albini, and Greil Marcus episodes are good), though I wish the host was less reverential and more about process. http://vishkhanna.com/kreative-kontrol/

TBH those guys should anguish a little more. Not to Maron levels, but just the constant stream of shrill wackiness is exhausting.

i liked that one. ferrell has such control of his comedic instrument—his voice—its kind of amazing to listen to him just go in and out of being funny

all the stuff about his dad, and the advice his dad gave him, was kinda fascinating imo

the lou barlow interview is great. especially if you're a sebadoh/dinosaur jr fan. i feel for him, he seems like a anxious troubled soul tbh. i had no idea he recently had a meth addiction. yikes.

maron should really read get around to reading "our band could be your life" if hes going to be interviewing 80s indie rockers

Yeah, and the whole bit about people at the Groundlings being "I give myself three years to get onto SNL" and "I will only improvise with this person and that person."
