one thing i have never found myself complaining about re ipad 1 is its weight, but then again i rock a 17" mac book pro

I used my 17" mbp as a LAPtop this weekend for the first time in, I dunno, a year? (main machine is a retina 15" mbp now) and wow it felt boxy & silly & thick & uncut & oh wait

damnit I thought I'd get away without buying anything

I occasionally sing with a dude who puts his music on his iPad and he has had to bail out of using it for concerts because it's about 5 times as heavy as any physical score we would be holding and there's no space in the choir area to put a stand. Making it lighter makes sense; I just don't see why they have to rebrand it as "iPad Air" rather than just saying "btw the new iPad weighs a pound, yr welcome" and calling it a day

people who have ipads: did you get wifi or wifi+mobile? what's the verdict on this?

I was given wifi+mobile and it's pretty great

mine's the former

i got wifi, when I need mobile I use hotspot from my phone. Has been fine.

(and stops me just fucking about on the internet all the time)

i have ipad wifi, actually bought it 3g capable but have never found myself with any impulse to get a data plan for it. (but the ipad rarely leaves my house, unlike the laptop and the phone -- if i carried it around a lot i can imagine wanting mobile coverage for it)

The idea of improved battery life is very appealing

it's like a 10% increase in battery life in the best possible circumstances. i doubt you'll see a huge improvement on a machine so old it's still running 10.6.

right, i'm just saying 10% is the theoretical upper limit improvement in battery life you will see, and with a non-new computer you will likely see less.

Torn between a mini and a nexus---like the google form factor, and the price, but I'm in the Mac ecosystem and would be using it for med stuff (chart checking, orders, reference) which I already have apps for.

what you're buying w/ ipad isn't just apple tax, it's also build quality and knowing you're going to get OS updates for years to come, android stuff is flashy and whizzbangy but often cheap and subject to premature obsolescence imo
