What I find fascinating is the 'real life' and the 'enjoyment', 'savouring' or 'really living' of it that atheists propose as being better than anything religious 'fairy-tales' have to offer. I mean, it's a rhetorical abstraction, and so shouldn't be expected to have any substance, but these people still seem to be very attached to it.

But then I find it disgusting when people say 'Mmm-mmm!' when they are eating, so.

That "face of atheism" thing seems to have gone down into Reddit lore as one of the site's most embarrassing innocuous moments.

I love the existence of this subreddit: r/ShitRedditSays, though I gather it is much-hated as a buncha PC pricks browbeating regular folks for being awesome and hilarious.

There's a certain blend of scientific progressivism, humanism and rationalism, which is very loud and very high-horse and I tend to find myself – for no very good reason – wanting to go very far away from that, and look at a windmill with a sunset behind it.

I suppose that isn't anti-atheism by strict definition though, so much as anti-people. But then atheism in practice tends to think that people are amazing!!

Yes, otm, and often when people like you and I shoot the fish, even the ones that actually deserve it, our shots seem to us to to hit, but actually miss them, due to them not giving a fuck about our grounds for complaint. Like that water surface refraction visual trickery effect.

(you can't ascribe beliefs to atheism in principle because it's a lack of belief; however, as it happens, atheism tends to come with other beliefs and attitudes most of the time, and one of these is commonly the idea that humans are amazing!! in other words, a naive belief in Science and Progress and Human Rights, which the person is often unaware of having; the version of Science, Progress 'n' Human Rights they espouse is, through the naivete of their belief, weakened and made brittle, vulnerable to the slightest tap of enquiry, the slightest cynicism)

i claim to be against atheist movement for aesthetic reasons but the truth is that it makes me feel uncomfortable bc it challenges my unexamined belief in divinity

perhaps the best way to describe what's at issue here isn't so much atheism as a personal belief (something I am sympathetic too) but as an ideological belief system.

and, while this is probably characteristic of most ideologies, it is one with a strong (though false) sense of its own non-ideological basis along with a huge mass of unexamined assumptions and assertions. when people go around talking about how scientific, rational, and objective they are, it's not being a "jeezo" (love that word) to point out that they're not doing a particularly good job of being any of those things.

Seeing as I rely on science to exist (medicines and that) and effectively do believe in progress (couldn't live comfortably with many systems that once existed) and indulge my human rights as per the geneva convention all the time (posting opinions to a forum, reading once banned novels).
