Bummer intro today

I got the glares, the mutterings, the snarls (President Keyes), Monday, 14 October 2013 13:02 (twelve years ago)

What do you do when you listen to these things?

Walk, cook, clean, iron, pack, shop, travel, commute, wait, play video games, do the washing up, lie on the beach, try to sleep, poop

I'm not a rockist, I just hate Rap-A-Lot (sic), Monday, 14 October 2013 13:13 (twelve years ago)

oh yeah gym, if I've run out of DJ mix podcasts. been tragically long since I've been to the gym though

drive. if i didn't have a commute i don't know that i would listen to podcasts...when i try to listen at work it's just in one ear and out the other, can't get engaged at all.

festival culture (Jordan), Monday, 14 October 2013 14:12 (twelve years ago)

I definitely can't listen to anything besides music at work. I listen to podcasts most often on my commute (esp. walking to/from and waiting for public transportation), at the gym, or while doing household chores (dishes, laundry, etc.)

Geoffrey Schweppes (jaymc), Monday, 14 October 2013 14:25 (twelve years ago)

i listen to podcasts mostly driving, but sometimes while cooking or cleaning the house

festival culture (Jordan), Monday, 14 October 2013 17:32 (twelve years ago)

Driving, airport, night interneting, gym, gaming

An Android Pug of Some Kind? (kingfish), Monday, 14 October 2013 17:34 (twelve years ago)

Aww, man! Just now listening to today's. I really thought this was gonna be the one, but :(

Johnny Fever, Monday, 14 October 2013 18:01 (twelve years ago)

Listened to this on a day off walk. Major bummer about his break up, but it sounds like he made the choice after trying to work through it for a long time. That happens, unfortunately. I hope he has a support mechanism of some kind to help out.

Natasha Lyonne was a pretty damn good conversation.

Survivalist Compound Row (B.L.A.M.), Monday, 14 October 2013 18:07 (twelve years ago)

break up! i just heard the one where he was like 'my lady's pregnant'!

HOOS it because...of steen???? (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Monday, 14 October 2013 18:35 (twelve years ago)

First the breakup talk, followed by a very sad and understated "pow i just shit my pants"

polyphonic, Monday, 14 October 2013 18:36 (twelve years ago)

i just heard the one where he was like 'my lady's pregnant'!

wait i thought they were just engaged and talking about it, not pregnant?

festival culture (Jordan), Monday, 14 October 2013 18:37 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, I missed any announcement of her actually being with child.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 14 October 2013 18:38 (twelve years ago)

maybe i'm misremembering but i thought i remembered him saying something about 'i'm havin a kid, man!' to somebody

might have been the engagement though

HOOS it because...of steen???? (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Monday, 14 October 2013 18:52 (twelve years ago)

what if she actually ends up with jonathan from UYD now

ᶓ͠סּᴥ͠סּᶔ ᶓͼ᷆ₓͼ᷇ᶔ (gr8080), Monday, 14 October 2013 18:53 (twelve years ago)

i don't think she was pregnant, she just really really really wanted a baby so he had been trying to get his head around whether he could be a dad etc as well as okay so we are going to get married etc

seemed like they had gone through a lot just getting to the point where he was ready to get engaged. he talked about it a bit after the book reading I went to in SF, during the q&a someone asked how everything was going with getting engaged and babies and stuff, and the more he talked about it the more it just sounded messy and fraught and v weird. But then their whole relationship from day one had been kind of a rollercoaster so I took it with a grain of salt , 'eh that's just the way some people are', I kinda didn't expect it to end even though they both sound like total nightmares :)

v sad

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 14 October 2013 20:33 (twelve years ago)

Look we all know the truth here. She met UYD. Dream fulfilled. Seatbelts.

woah did you see that hummingbird over there? anyway, meth (sunny successor), Tuesday, 15 October 2013 09:12 (twelve years ago)

I got the glares, the mutterings, the snarls (President Keyes), Tuesday, 15 October 2013 10:26 (twelve years ago)

Man, I was sure from the way he talked about his relationship on the podcast that they weren't really right for each other. At least they didn't actually get married. Hope the break-up doesn't hurt him for too long.

how's life, Tuesday, 15 October 2013 11:40 (twelve years ago)

Thought that he had a great rapport with Homme, by the way. Bummed that I googled "vinegaroons".

how's life, Tuesday, 15 October 2013 11:44 (twelve years ago)

I googled "solfugid" and had a similar experience. Hey at least that tail isn't a stinger.

ΙΧΘΥΣ blindness (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Tuesday, 15 October 2013 12:07 (twelve years ago)

yeah, yeah, the solfugid too. But then Homme says something like "where'd you grow up? new mexico? oh man, the vinegaroons...."

how's life, Tuesday, 15 October 2013 12:34 (twelve years ago)

I'm listening to this Moon Zappa episode and I feel like I'm a fly on the wall during someone's second date.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 15:39 (twelve years ago)

Yeah. She really didn't want to talk about dad. Marc keeps going there, though.

6 Tuesdays on every Tuesday. This is called dumpy pants. (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 23 October 2013 15:42 (twelve years ago)

Just got to the part where he's pressing her for Frank info. It's uncomfortable. The sound of Moon's voice is like "really, ask me about ANYTHING ELSE than my dad."

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 16:03 (twelve years ago)

What else was she there to talk about?

how's life, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 16:11 (twelve years ago)

I had a bad feeling when I saw her name pop up, considering the number of times recently when he's mentioned Zappa or Beefheart on the show.

how's life, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 16:11 (twelve years ago)

That's why I said it sounds like a date. They're mostly just shooting the shit, and then Marc gets all "tell me about your ka-ray-zee family!"

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 16:12 (twelve years ago)

I'm on the other side of that part now and she didn't get debased by it at all. It was more of a case of me rolling my eyes at Marc.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 16:14 (twelve years ago)

Moon Zappa might be the most useless WTF episode I've heard. No idea why I stuck with it.

brio, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 16:24 (twelve years ago)

He eased up, and then it got weirder after the last time I posted.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 16:25 (twelve years ago)

I was gonna say, it felt like they talked about FZ until the end

I got the glares, the mutterings, the snarls (President Keyes), Wednesday, 23 October 2013 16:43 (twelve years ago)

I'm so glad he's finally getting a bunch of SNL resolution today.

WTF is going to end like Lost, with Lorne Michaels ushering Maron into a room of pure light

brio, Thursday, 24 October 2013 17:34 (twelve years ago)

Light goes out, Maron's standing on abandoned stage at SNL which has just been cancelled.

Looking forward to this one. Knoxville's punchline in this anecdote is killer.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 25 October 2013 21:51 (twelve years ago)

:D yay

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 26 October 2013 05:57 (twelve years ago)

two weeks pass...

Ugh, this fucking Booker T. Jones interview is excruciating and cringeworthy. It's not Jones' fault; he's a fascinating interview, and brings new perspectives to old stories, but ffs Marc, why did you ask him if he thought Otis Redding's death was part of a mafia plot?

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 15 November 2013 16:10 (twelve years ago)

the last couple weeks have been on the boring side, but i liked Booker T. got a little choked up when he talked about sending all his personal brass instruments (no idea he did a senior college recital on trombone!) to New Orleans post-Katrina.

festival culture (Jordan), Friday, 15 November 2013 16:21 (twelve years ago)

today's show is pretty dark

I got the glares, the mutterings, the snarls (President Keyes), Friday, 15 November 2013 17:42 (twelve years ago)

yeah, Booker T was a really botched interview, shame because Booker T was so open and relaxed and likeable. Could have been great.

brio, Friday, 15 November 2013 17:57 (twelve years ago)

I really wish someone besides Marc could get these longform podcast interviews with musicians. They're lots of fun but rarely does he make them better.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 15 November 2013 18:00 (twelve years ago)

Yeah - totally agree. Would be cool if it was musician host who could relate to other musicians the way Maron does with comics at his best. Ilx's own underrated aerosmith would be great.

brio, Friday, 15 November 2013 18:04 (twelve years ago)

Low Times seems like the best candidate to fill that gap but they're so irregular, even with three people doing the interviews, and they interview a lot of people I just don't care about. But the Guy Picciotto interview they did was great.
I also like when Jake Fogelnest has musicians on the Fogelnest Files, his recent episodes with Kim Fowley and Don Bolles were both amazing. But he's pretty invested in a specific arena of weird LA rockers.

Immediate Follower (NA), Friday, 15 November 2013 18:05 (twelve years ago)

Maybe after the Best Show ends, Tom Scharpling will do more Low Times stuff. His interview with GE Smith was really interesting and I bet the Dave Wyndorf episode is great too.
