WTF with Marc Maron (it's a podcast)

they're a big bowl of tolerable

especially doing it 3 hours a week. it's like hanging out with a relative at this point, not nails-on-chalkboard, just a "here we go again" eyeroll when he talks about the time he sauteed the onions perfectly for the lox and onions sandwich yet again

I had to stop listening to every episode & only DL ones that I thought I'd really be into. I think in 2013 I've only downloaded 8-10 eps and only listened to 3 lately (Catherine O'Hara, Laura Dern and Michael Keaton, all were complete treats). I also skip the first 11 mins or so because I'm not having it anymore :/

that's my method too - he's been on kind of a roll with guests I'm interested in lately though

curious if any WTF/MM fans who were previously unfamiliar with Uhh Yeah Dude listened to that ep and had opinions one way or the other

i'm so far behind on these because i couldn't stand the thought of listening to Maron kiss up to Maynard from Tool for an hour and a half, but i finally listened to that ep and it was actually pretty decent. Maynard comes across as really likable and distances himself from the insuffarable Tool fan contingent nicely.

The Homme one is a mixed bag so far.

I started listening to uyd after hearing them on wtf. Thought they seemed really funny and likeable. Listen all the time now and only dip back in to maron occasionally

I don't know if I just picked the wrong time to dip into UYD or what, but the two episodes I listened to earlier this year were insufferable.

I don't know, I dip into the UYD thread from time to time and I just was not hearing any of the stuff that you guys talk about in that thread. The thread makes it sound like a really fun listen, but I just wasn't hearing it. Granted, I think a part of it is that its clearly a podcast that rewards long-time listeners, there seemed to be lots of in-jokes and references that were flying past me. Problem was those two episodes I listened to didn't have anything that made me want to hear more.

don't know which two you heard but I doubt they were as barren as all that

the joy in UYD is definitely in familiarity w/ seth + jah and their unique chemistry, not in subject matter or material

I guess the in-joke is that it's clear a classroom full of Korean kids has researched UYD by finding Seth's car on Google Earth

I agree with j/v/c, I've tried UYD a few times and while it's occasionally entertaining I don't really get it overall. But yeah it seems like if you listened every week and got to know the dudes it would have more appeal. It's probably like the Best Show is for me.

tbh I have played episodes with mr veg in the car with me and found myself hearing them with an "outsider's" ears - they do sound kind of inane. i can see how it may not grab you

j/v/c and na there is a site called thisyear.org where they have best of radio shows, podcasts etc. maybe take a listen to uyd 2006 best of and see what you think. it really is a enter at the ground floor situation i think

yeah, i was actually talking to a friend that is a big UYD guy and he said 2013 era is probably the worst place to start. when i get some free time i'll try to give one of those best ofs a shot.

Just watched Thinky Pain on Netflix and it was great. The sharpest set of his I've heard in a long long time, yet it was still really relaxed and loose.

It gets pretty good towards the end. This is the first interview with him I've heard where he discusses what put him in the hospital, what happened afterwards and how its reflected in the album. And a lot about being young in the California desert and that whole scene. Thought it was one of the better ones I've listened to, actually.

when Maron starts to perv a little on Nick Cave's wife and Cave says "steady on, mate" it's a pretty great moment

Don't normally 'do' podcasts but have given the Jeff Garlin one a few goes (Larry David/Aziz Ansari)...fuck he laugh is horrific. LD one was good enough, literally don't remember Aziz talking at all on his one, just endless half-compliments from Jeff/anecdotes about Eddie Murphy.

What do you do when you listen to these things? Browse the internet? Sit listening intently?

oh yeah gym, if I've run out of DJ mix podcasts. been tragically long since I've been to the gym though

drive. if i didn't have a commute i don't know that i would listen to podcasts...when i try to listen at work it's just in one ear and out the other, can't get engaged at all.

I definitely can't listen to anything besides music at work. I listen to podcasts most often on my commute (esp. walking to/from and waiting for public transportation), at the gym, or while doing household chores (dishes, laundry, etc.)

i listen to podcasts mostly driving, but sometimes while cooking or cleaning the house
