my guess once people develop a mental image on a quasi subconscious level of ios as a 3d space these effects will improve usability, tho ur a tech dude who im sure is really good at using such things already so maybe it doesnt matter to you, but i think its super clever and subtle, lol everyone talking abt it being flat

the complaints i'm hearing most are from people who are not tech minded at all. 'er indoors (only one example) cracked it because her ipad was suddenly doing some movement thing that she couldn't describe, but that had made her feel nauseous; and she had attributed her discomfort to the ~whole~ of ios 7 ('i really don't like that update you put on my ipad'). she never ever mentions her ipad, and she brought this up over dinner when we weren't even talking about ipads.

when i first noticed my phone springboard jiggling (the icon grid in relation to the screen, not the wallpaper in relation to the icon grid), i didn't even realise it was the parallax effect, and very genuinely thought i'd had too many tim tams that morning. it wasn't a subtle and pleasing effect, it was an aberrant jiggle that happened when i was barely moving the phone. it's only because i took comparative screenshots that i know the icons were moving. most users won't even know to do that much.

but eh, you're probably right in users just getting used to it.

what's the point of any graphical anything on a phone? to make it look and feel nicer. what, you want a command line interface?

installing an ssh client on my phone so i could remote login to my good ole unix box was the most delightful thing to ever happen to the phone

lag∞n, Saturday, 21 September 2013 22:36 (twelve years ago)

Oh, nice.

They also reworked Bluetooth stuff like crazy. Devices that accept notifications can now get every Notification Center update.

Probably will be most visible in that car integration stuff they're pushing, but stuff like Pebble watches work with it.

Whoa, huge, huge improvement in battery life on iOS 7.

At 74% after 15 hours of more frequent use than typical, including a bunch of GPS. It had been going down to ~40% by afternoon on a work day w/ far less use.

dark art, battery life

Had just come onto the thread to see if anyone else had noticed a huge improvement in battery life.

michaellambert, Sunday, 22 September 2013 09:26 (twelve years ago)

i think i have. used it for hours today, only burned off 1/3 of the battery (iphone 5).

obi wankin' obi (Autumn Almanac), Sunday, 22 September 2013 10:02 (twelve years ago)

Mine's quite a bit worse now on my 4s I think. Down to 49% and I've only been up a couple of hours. Always bad when I'm using 3G heavily, I think.

Alba, Sunday, 22 September 2013 10:58 (twelve years ago)

used all day and barely got below 50% yesterday. nice

my phone was having trouble charging and yesterday i used a toothpick to dig out some lint from the connector. now it charges like a charm. so that's another big improvement.

socki (s1ocki), Sunday, 22 September 2013 13:30 (twelve years ago)

that's good, the q-tip that came with ios6 never worked properly

cannot save custom timers!!!
cannot use any other app as an effective alarm or timer bcz of silent mode/background
cmon weather app icon just show me the number of degrees for the temperature it is outside w/ like a lil logo or something telling me if it's sun or rain or w/e

also plz to advice--does it make any diff ordering this from apple.com or ordering this from att.com?

Tetsu: The Inoue Man (Stevie D(eux)), Sunday, 22 September 2013 14:41 (twelve years ago)

yeah they really really shouldve taken the opportunity to make the weather icon live

lag∞n, Sunday, 22 September 2013 14:44 (twelve years ago)

I like iOS7 overall, but one thing that bugs me on the iPad is using the gesture to get to the multi-tasking feels weird because you four finger swipe up, but then the screen goes to the side.

Jeff, Sunday, 22 September 2013 14:53 (twelve years ago)

yeah thats bad

lag∞n, Sunday, 22 September 2013 15:09 (twelve years ago)

lag∞n, Sunday, 22 September 2013 15:09 (twelve years ago)

I updated on my 4 (I know, living on the edge, but I'm upgrading to a 5c or s soon anyway) and have had mixed results. Battery life seems down, but the battery is on it's last legs anyway. Performance is mixed, some things like opening apps seem a bit slower, but once in apps, seem a bit faster.

I feel like I've waited my whole life to be able to adjust screen brightness without going into settings.

dan selzer, Sunday, 22 September 2013 15:56 (twelve years ago)

what color r u getting

lag∞n, Sunday, 22 September 2013 16:09 (twelve years ago)

Only real complaints I have are that when you open a folder you can only see the first 9 apps. I'd be happier w/ smaller icons and one more row of them.

Also, the tabs icon on Safari no longer tells you how many you have open.

And I can't find weather, but that's my problem I guess.

why not? you don't use it for reading or anything?

markers, Sunday, 22 September 2013 17:27 (twelve years ago)

My iPad will remain woefully underused until some jb comes out for either 6.1.3/4 or 7.0. Gonna just be a Netflix machine until then.

Call me Shitmael (CompuPost), Sunday, 22 September 2013 17:44 (twelve years ago)

Ooh the clock icon is live. That's nice.

stet, Sunday, 22 September 2013 20:50 (twelve years ago)

And I can't find weather, but that's my problem I guess.

there's a handful of apps the ipad never had; iirc weather is one of them

obi wankin' obi (Autumn Almanac), Sunday, 22 September 2013 22:09 (twelve years ago)

ipad doesn't support siri now, does it? because installing 7.0 asked me to configure siri, which I did.

akm, Sunday, 22 September 2013 22:10 (twelve years ago)

iPad's supported Siri since 6 iirc

I don't know what color to get. Slate Grey if I get a 5s, white or yellow if I get a C. I have to say, they're pretty strange colors.

naw i stared reading ebooks on my iphone and... I like it, or at least its caused me to read books cause its in the flow of dicking around on my phone

I've contemplated this. It seems like a frightening step somehow. Like my book reading is still this sanctified thing if I'm doing it on a separate device from my phone. I guess I feel like when reading extended prose on my nook I am less likely to click over every 2 minutes to check other shit...

So I have Notification Center sort set to Manual ... and iMessage above Gmail in the list ... but still seems like it's sorted chronologically (if an email comes in after a text message, the email gets shown on top.) Pitchfork time imo.

I started doing this too because it's a good way to (1) read on the train without having to remember to bring anything and (2) read in bed without bothering the lady and the baby with light

4S screen is just slightly too small to be enjoyable to read on though, so looking forward to eventual upgrade.
