it's an interesting problem. I think if "honoring women" is tainted by patriarchy (and it surely is) then we also have to ask if, say, "don't be an asshole" is tainted in some sense as well. I mean, isn't that how things like patriarchy (or capital, or whatever) really work? don't they constrain not only norms but also opposition to those norms? and isn't that the big problem face by left/critical theory? can different terms be more or less "patriarchal" when patriarchy is more or less the totalizing hegemonic field in which those words obtain their signification? can we talk in "degrees" and is it useful to do so? just thinkin...

there is a "no fap" reddit iirc

your authentic guitar playing self (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 22:14 (twelve years ago)

i think mordy is also right that "patriarchy" as it is often slung around the internet is tautological. based on classical (and probably now rather out of date) understandings of patriarchy, anything you can say is already patriarchal before you even say it.

to my mind, this doesn't invalidate such critiques (quite the contrary!), but it does constrain their presumed authority and objectivity. so you can describe anything as patriarchal, but you can equally describe it in some other way that excludes patriarchy. you're accountable to what you're leaving out in either case.

ryan, Tuesday, 17 September 2013 22:23 (twelve years ago)

well i mean ryan it depends how you define patriarchy i guess? like is it a totalizing gestalt or a specific constellation of stuff.

well i'm sure that discussion has its uses, but on the other hand there are a lot of people who have a well-defined meaning for the complicated term that is patriarchy, and they use in discussion with other people who have an adequately similar understanding of it, and therefore i dunno wtf mordy is on about.

yeah obviously this is important! that's sorta what im trying to get at: how/when you draw that distinction--then again as Merdeyeux says maybe it has nothing to do with this thread.

So re: patriarchy and explanatory lift, Mordy you're saying the discussion would be more interesting if people unpacked 'patriarchy' more, rather than just saying the word? Specifically, around the internet?

Sort of agree

cardamon, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 01:39 (twelve years ago)

mordy is saying 'patriarchy' has no referent because it does not exist. he's just beating around the bush in this regard.

http://pickuplinesx.com/signs-that-a-girl-like-you/ What kind of overlap do you think there is between PUA and the mentally ill? This 'signs that' essay seems a bit more of a 'logorrhea/pressured speech' thing than a 'english isn't my first language thing'. Got directed to that while looking for Breaking Bad cast list by the way, whish shows that meth is a gateway drug for...whatever that kid is trying to do.

By Scots I mean 'all sounded the same' 'How do you feel about Ireland? That place - that's just across the sea'. Dexys is about as Irish as my tastes run. But give me some Deacon Blue or some Proclaimers. When does the opposition start to melt?

dowd is a fairly "common" Irish surame no? With or w/o the O'

velko, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 06:58 (twelve years ago)

It is at that. My first and last names are also of Irish origin in real life. But that's because all my ancestors seems to have huddle in Kintyre - and you can hit Ireland with a skipping stone from there.

Is there a celtic folk thread? Anyway, my roots are more https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKvB3g3HEPQ than https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yx3iB68EKUo given my family mostly took the King's shilling. Does this stuff try to teach you how to be a man, do you think? Never worked a damn on me. I did learn, however, to never agree to DJ at a fundraiser for a Celtic Supporters Club unless you're sure no-one minds that you're a Dundee fan whose attitude to nationalism is to say the workers have no country. Also, saying I'll put the rebel songs comp on the turntable but you'll have to put the needles down yourself is not a good compromise.
