I am perfectly fine with criticizing on ilx what I find to not be ideal when I am a lot more compromising in daily life

beautifully, unapologetically plastic (mh), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 17:46 (twelve years ago)

i feel the opposite way entirely

Mordy , Tuesday, 17 September 2013 17:53 (twelve years ago)

by "a lot more compromising" I mean calling out friends but sitting quiet when my coworkers crack jokes assuming they don't know anything about cooking or cleaning but their wives are really in charge at home ("the boss")

beautifully, unapologetically plastic (mh), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 18:30 (twelve years ago)

everyone itt otm but its is a prime example of nu-ilx's gradschool vibe being so much more tedious and boring than whatever ilx was in 2008

I like when it goes on for several days and then max pipes up with a one-line comment sarcastically agreeing and disappears

beautifully, unapologetically plastic (mh), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 18:40 (twelve years ago)

What is going on here exactly? Seems Mordy and everyone else are on pretty much the same side, right? Is it just because it's him?

I have gathered no gaudy flowers of speech in other men's gardens (dowd), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 18:59 (twelve years ago)

yeah no

your authentic guitar playing self (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 19:11 (twelve years ago)

i mean mordy has tried to deny the patriarchal implications of "honoring women" so no i do not think that we agree, exactly

your authentic guitar playing self (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 19:17 (twelve years ago)

yeah, hell, i deny the patriarchy tbh

Mordy , Tuesday, 17 September 2013 19:17 (twelve years ago)

me + hannah rosen - we're clearing the way

Mordy , Tuesday, 17 September 2013 19:17 (twelve years ago)

the greatest trick the patriarchy ever played was convincing the world that the patriarchy doesn't exist

your authentic guitar playing self (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 19:23 (twelve years ago)

~makes u think~

your authentic guitar playing self (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 19:24 (twelve years ago)

just look at the media, at the entertainment industry, the patriarchy is already gone

beautifully, unapologetically plastic (mh), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 19:43 (twelve years ago)

Yes. Women actors stop getting parts when they pass age 40, while 60 year old men still get cast as romantic leads, because that's what the audience demands, not because of the patriarchy, for gosh sakes.

Aimless, Tuesday, 17 September 2013 19:48 (twelve years ago)

my primary problem w/ the term 'patriarchy' is that it does very little explanatory lifting while making dumb ppl think they understand something about the way society operates

Mordy , Tuesday, 17 September 2013 19:53 (twelve years ago)

yeah right on, comrade

goole, Tuesday, 17 September 2013 19:54 (twelve years ago)

so basically the same problem i have w/ 'privilege,' 'social justice,' and a variety of other trendy tumblr terms

Mordy , Tuesday, 17 September 2013 19:55 (twelve years ago)

But not 'honour'. Nope, that one's fine.

emil.y, Tuesday, 17 September 2013 19:58 (twelve years ago)

I am spartacus the patriarchy a tumblr white ready for my close-up, Mr Demille.

Aimless, Tuesday, 17 September 2013 19:59 (twelve years ago)

i know i only learnt the word honor last week on socialjusticeagainstpatriarchy.tumblr.com but i feel like it's going to be a keeper for the language

Mordy , Tuesday, 17 September 2013 20:01 (twelve years ago)

are there any terms as such that do explanatory lifting? in german maybe.

(and more to the point, is there any help for dumb people from language? [or anything else])

Wait, you *actually* think that tumblr invented the term patriarchy? Because otherwise that sarcasm makes no sense. Either way, you're being an idiot.

emil.y, Tuesday, 17 September 2013 20:02 (twelve years ago)

i like to use words with other words because they can explain more than words without other words, but that's just me i'm weird that way i dunno

"Dave Barlow" is the name Lou uses on sabermetrics baseball sites (s.clover), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 20:03 (twelve years ago)

i don't think tumblr invented the term patriarchy. i think a lot of ppl learnt the term from tumblr however.

Mordy , Tuesday, 17 September 2013 20:05 (twelve years ago)

So, because someone learned a term wrong on the Internet, there's no point in using it correctly? Is that actually your argument or are you just being contrary because you don't want to be challenged?

WHAT DOES SAMANTHA FOX SAY (DJP), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 20:08 (twelve years ago)

"my problem with these terms is that i consider myself to be way smarter than the people who use them, because of reasons plus i went to school a lot. if they can't frame their experiences and grievances in the proper terminology that i prefer and which is correct then they are just big dumb baby whiners. QED."

your authentic guitar playing self (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 20:09 (twelve years ago)

it's not that ppl are or aren't using it correctly, it's that the way it's used online - and esp on ilx - is tautological.

Mordy , Tuesday, 17 September 2013 20:10 (twelve years ago)

can you please explain how my use of the word "patriarchal" upthread expresses a tautology?

your authentic guitar playing self (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 20:14 (twelve years ago)

xp
that should be easy to verify, bcz this is ilx and we have been using the term.

Aimless, Tuesday, 17 September 2013 20:15 (twelve years ago)

for instance:

Yes. Women actors stop getting parts when they pass age 40, while 60 year old men still get cast as romantic leads, because that's what the audience demands, not because of the patriarchy, for gosh sakes.

― Aimless, Tuesday, September 17, 2013 3:48 PM (21 minutes ago)

what does that post mean? what would you do w/ this explanation for the phenomenon? when looking at social contexts you're already overwhelmed w/ overdetermination - it's silly to then start to pretend you understand why things happen bc you have a trendy jargon term.

Mordy , Tuesday, 17 September 2013 20:15 (twelve years ago)

projecting much

kinder, Tuesday, 17 September 2013 20:15 (twelve years ago)

aimless would undoubtedly say that 'patriarchy' encompasses a variety of phenomena which is what makes it tautological - it is meaningless on its own, only in reference to the things you are assuming get wrapped up in it. it's a way of conveying a sentiment, or affect, but there's no actual content in the declaration. elmo, you said that 'honor' has patriarchal implications. what the fuck is a patriarchal implication? how can a word have an implication for a theoretical system of social organization? you mean that some ppl who you identify as reifying this system may also use this term? it's just total vague handwaving.

Mordy , Tuesday, 17 September 2013 20:17 (twelve years ago)

it's not that ppl are or aren't using it correctly, it's that the way it's used online - and esp on ilx - is tautological.

Wait, so... Mordy claims that the FIERCE GENTLEMEN are fine saying they 'honour women' because the way Mordy uses honour isn't sexist and therefore it can't ever be used in a sexist way, but then claims that nobody is allowed to use the term patriarchy because some people on the internet use it 'tautologically'? WTF?

emil.y, Tuesday, 17 September 2013 20:19 (twelve years ago)

"it is meaningless on its own, only in reference to the things you are assuming get wrapped up in it."

Saussure to thread

"Dave Barlow" is the name Lou uses on sabermetrics baseball sites (s.clover), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 20:19 (twelve years ago)

i claim it's fine bc you made up the context that gives it 'patriarchal implications.' you can't use paratext and then pretend it's subtext; that's daft. and please, use the term patriarchy in a way that's insightful and interesting and brings something new to the table besides yelling at anonymous internet ppl. what a refreshing change that would be.

Mordy , Tuesday, 17 September 2013 20:20 (twelve years ago)

do your words have meaning on their own not only in reference to other things mordy? because that's quite an achievement.

"Dave Barlow" is the name Lou uses on sabermetrics baseball sites (s.clover), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 20:21 (twelve years ago)

i claim it's fine bc you made up the context that gives it 'patriarchal implications.'

What did I make up when now?

emil.y, Tuesday, 17 September 2013 20:21 (twelve years ago)

do you believe there's a difference between giving a causative description of a phenomenon and blaming it on 'patriarchy' or 'capitalism' or other words that imply systems of ideology but don't have referents themselves?

Mordy , Tuesday, 17 September 2013 20:22 (twelve years ago)

we've all failed at academic rigor on an internet message board, lock thread, everyone go home

your authentic guitar playing self (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 20:22 (twelve years ago)

a man telling a woman exactly how to use the term patriarchy
explain THAT phenomenon!

kinder, Tuesday, 17 September 2013 20:23 (twelve years ago)

but you've succeeded at nebulous 'social justice' so celebrate w/ some pizza + coke

Mordy , Tuesday, 17 September 2013 20:23 (twelve years ago)

i love it when mordy goes into full-throttle smartypants mode when challenged

your authentic guitar playing self (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 20:23 (twelve years ago)

oh yeah, that's another thing i don't give a shit about kinder. xxp

Mordy , Tuesday, 17 September 2013 20:24 (twelve years ago)

what is?

kinder, Tuesday, 17 September 2013 20:24 (twelve years ago)

being a dick

WHAT DOES SAMANTHA FOX SAY (DJP), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 20:25 (twelve years ago)

i don't think your gender gives you special insight into particular words

Mordy , Tuesday, 17 September 2013 20:25 (twelve years ago)

"don't have referents"

and now we get to the meat of the question!

what is the referent of 'honor'.

what is the referent of 'language'.

what is the referent of 'difference'.

what is the referent of 'buffalo'.

what is the referent of 'referent'.

"Dave Barlow" is the name Lou uses on sabermetrics baseball sites (s.clover), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 20:26 (twelve years ago)

what is the referent of 'insight'.

"Dave Barlow" is the name Lou uses on sabermetrics baseball sites (s.clover), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 20:27 (twelve years ago)

*my* gender?

kinder, Tuesday, 17 September 2013 20:28 (twelve years ago)
