Shall we anticipate the FIFTH SEASON of the AMC series "Breaking Bad"? I think I may.

the justification was that he needed money to support his family, which now owns a (presumably successful?) business. As he said, he was in the "empire business," paying for Walt's college education was the furthest thing from his mind by the point he was blowing up drug lords.

Exactly. I don't get how caring about the money he "earned" is somehow contradictory to his prideful nature.

and it's also worth a lot of money in itself, geez

Matt Armstrong, Monday, 9 September 2013 07:43 (twelve years ago)

huell's "they killed jesse...and then they're gonna kill me! oh my GAAAAAAAAAAA" and walt's "that's right, it was me!" scene were atypically loud and pulp-familiar for this show, but i didn't not buy that the brains were effective and that walt would be clouded by moneyfear and the desire to chastise jesse for the 953rd time.

da croupier, Monday, 9 September 2013 08:34 (twelve years ago)

I don't like that the producers seem to want us to believe Walt cares that much about the money. It hasn't been about the money for him ever since they could afford to buy a car wash.

as crazy as the theory of Jesse stealing the Heisenberg notoriety was, the theorizers were right that that's really where Walt "lives"

― Matt Armstrong, Monday, September 9, 2013 2:04 AM (5 hours ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

i agree w/ this but at least think it's a better catalyst than using his baby or walt jr; the best plan was still hanks initial one that jesse freaked out on

johnny crunch, Monday, 9 September 2013 11:36 (twelve years ago)

Agreed with a lot of the criticisms of it being rushed in retrospect, but damn if I wasn't 100% drawn in last night. When Breaking Bad gets up to that energy level, it's insanely tense, probably because so much of the time the energy level isn't that high.

Vinnie, Monday, 9 September 2013 13:35 (twelve years ago)

All last week I was sure the whole show was leading to Jesse sacrificing himself to bring down Walt - now I'm thinking Walt will ultimately die to save Jesse. I think they're going to give Walt some measure of redemption.

brio, Monday, 9 September 2013 13:54 (twelve years ago)

walt gives up jesse to the nazis to cook for them/spare his life. walt escapes to wherever (NH presumably, family remaining in tow?). goes back to new mexico to free him in nazi firefight/ricinfest.

oops, meant to say I think Western® with Bacon Flavor is onto something here

brio, Monday, 9 September 2013 13:55 (twelve years ago)

Liked the symmetry of Lydia's "Blue is our brand" and Skyler telling Walt Jr. he has to say "Have an A-1 day" "because it's our brand."

Shart Week (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Monday, 9 September 2013 13:56 (twelve years ago)

was killing me them standing around patting themselves on the back while the nazis are on the way

lag∞n, Monday, 9 September 2013 13:57 (twelve years ago)

And now soooo many people have the money coordinates that Walt would rather didn't. Although I guess the nazis don't know there's any money buried there.

Shart Week (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Monday, 9 September 2013 13:58 (twelve years ago)

walt fucked up so many times this ep, not realizing the aryans would come anyway was the icing

lag∞n, Monday, 9 September 2013 14:01 (twelve years ago)

hank and gomie dead, jesse slinks away during the firefight?

lag∞n, Monday, 9 September 2013 14:02 (twelve years ago)

been re-screening this from s01e01 lately

never had a problem w/skyler before but think she comes across as well as can be expected given her husband is acting v.weird while barefaced lying to her 24/7

from about 3/4 eps after they've dispensed w/the grounding ('walt's a meek sop who is going to fight back') walt is a right cunt from thereon

myonga vön bantee (cozen), Monday, 9 September 2013 14:02 (twelve years ago)

Jesse seems the one most likely to get away considering he is the only one not in handcuffs that is also not being shot at directly.

Todd looked like such a goof when he was shooting.

"Max's Original Starship" Vol. 3 (sunny successor), Monday, 9 September 2013 14:04 (twelve years ago)

The show is so good at setting up expectations then crushing them. With the gps coords carefully hidden on the lotto ticket on the fridge, you're thinking that's gonna be for the long run. Then 2 or so ep later and suddenly Jesse, the cops and the Aryan Nation all know the spot.

dan selzer, Monday, 9 September 2013 14:05 (twelve years ago)

Actually wouldn't put it passed Jesse to save Walt from the shoot out.

"Max's Original Starship" Vol. 3 (sunny successor), Monday, 9 September 2013 14:06 (twelve years ago)

yah walt was so rash, so motivated to preserve the $$ we are supposed to believe right; did he even bury it still in the drums, i guess he did, but why would jesse just send him a pic of 1 if he had found them all, cmon walter u blew it bro

johnny crunch, Monday, 9 September 2013 14:07 (twelve years ago)

btw, how did Hank follow Walt? Walt's been paranoid and anal about removing the tracker from his car, and even that is the kind that shows you where it's been. Were they tracking the cell phone call somehow. Are we supposed to assume that even though it's a bit of a stretch that they'd be able to do that? Or did they follow him, which would've been tough to do unnoticed?

dan selzer, Monday, 9 September 2013 14:09 (twelve years ago)

yea the cell however. thats y jesse was all u have to stay on this line etc etc

johnny crunch, Monday, 9 September 2013 14:10 (twelve years ago)

would that not have required some assistance from operations back at police HQ?

myonga vön bantee (cozen), Monday, 9 September 2013 14:12 (twelve years ago)

if they just recorded the call theyd have walt admitting to murder and wouldnt have even needed to go to the desert and get killed

lag∞n, Monday, 9 September 2013 14:12 (twelve years ago)

i dont think they couldve tracked the cell on their own they mustve just followed him

lag∞n, Monday, 9 September 2013 14:13 (twelve years ago)

so why DID the nazis turn up anyway? just because they didn't want walt out of their grasp?

Waluigi Nono (Merdeyeux), Monday, 9 September 2013 14:18 (twelve years ago)

They needed him for a cook, and Walt suddenly and frantically telling them the deal's off may have made them think that some other team snagged Walt.

Shart Week (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Monday, 9 September 2013 14:20 (twelve years ago)

they believed he was in trouble imo

combination hair (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Monday, 9 September 2013 14:22 (twelve years ago)

you cant just act all weird and uncall a bunch of murderous psychos

lag∞n, Monday, 9 September 2013 14:22 (twelve years ago)

It was pure TV though. You knew they'd show up and do some Ark of the Covenant destruction.

first I think it's time I kick a little verse! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 9 September 2013 14:24 (twelve years ago)

yeah I think Nazis just showed up because "why not? we've got our guns out and we want walt alive" though firing a million rounds into the car he's in seems pretty dumb if that's the case. But then, they are really dumb and violent so pretty much makes sense.

the whole cell phone tracking thing was a definitely dodgy - aren't you only able to track to the nearest cell tower, not exact gps? and would there even be a nearby cell tower in the middle of the desert? I don't know - maybe

but agree a lot of this stuff didn't bother me much during the show itself - I'll accept they're going to have to take some short-cuts to get the full arc in this season and it's fun when they really ratchet things up, as they've done in the final 3 episodes in the past

brio, Monday, 9 September 2013 14:25 (twelve years ago)

I think they're going to give Walt some measure of redemption.

also yeah - Cranston's physical performance is telegraphing this I think, the (slightly, beautifully imo) exaggerated awkwardness when he's crouching down in the car and cringing, the easing-back of swaggering Heisenberg into bumbling, cancer-stricken Walt. I think we're going to be reminded that there was a high school teacher who was fucked up inside the guy we now know, but who was a dad with decent fatherly impulses that are inextricably bound up with narcissism etc but which are still in there.

combination hair (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Monday, 9 September 2013 14:25 (twelve years ago)

basically he needs to stop wearing the Heisenberg hat to return to normal

first I think it's time I kick a little verse! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 9 September 2013 14:26 (twelve years ago)

maybe the ayrans dont really mind if walt is dies tho

lag∞n, Monday, 9 September 2013 14:27 (twelve years ago)

don't get me wrong w/ the cell question, I'm totally fine suspending disbelief. Didn't bother me that he buried those drums.

dan selzer, Monday, 9 September 2013 14:28 (twelve years ago)

well, we have to believe that Walt's blue meth recipe is as ultra-special as the formula for Coke.

first I think it's time I kick a little verse! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 9 September 2013 14:28 (twelve years ago)

is his stuff the kind you learn from teaching basic chemistry for years? Couldn't the Gestapo kidnap another nebbishy chem teacher?

first I think it's time I kick a little verse! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 9 September 2013 14:29 (twelve years ago)

im sure theyd like to have him cook for them but pretty much everyone who deals w walt comes to the conclusion that hes really not worth it

lag∞n, Monday, 9 September 2013 14:31 (twelve years ago)

xposts

yeah, dying loser walt is definitely back... it's really worth going back to re-watch the pilot episode from the first season if you're really into the show now - i think they've been echoing it a lot in recent episodes

brio, Monday, 9 September 2013 14:31 (twelve years ago)

i mean hes acting all weird they go and check it out and hes been arrested and now they have to kill cops

lag∞n, Monday, 9 September 2013 14:31 (twelve years ago)

( Alfred, there'a a whole origin storyline, referenced when his ex showed up; he was a chemistry whiz who left his original enterprise, because his partners wouldn't bow down)
They must have been following Walt for a while, to get there so quickly. But--unless they were waiting near the carwash--may have had some tracking equipment--taken from HQ or local spy shop. not hard to find those in the citay nowadays. Anyway, I was thinking a couple of reasons whul Walt despairs as soon as he sees them: he figures they may well have recorded his freak-out, maybe co-ordinates too, and could have emailed this stuff (counter to the "confession" video). Even if they didn't, which would fit this ep's whole heat-of-the-moment theme, where nobody's capable of chess moves, apparently; still, Hank has informed THE LADY In PURPLE OMG

dow, Monday, 9 September 2013 14:34 (twelve years ago)

I doubt that it will come down to Walt trying to save Jesse, not after he's gone far enough to put out a hit on him.

dow, Monday, 9 September 2013 14:36 (twelve years ago)

yah they couldve thrown a tracking device on his car right before calling him

lag∞n, Monday, 9 September 2013 14:36 (twelve years ago)

xpost x2, regardless of all that, he's caught. There's nowhere to run or hide.

dan selzer, Monday, 9 September 2013 14:36 (twelve years ago)

basically he needs to stop wearing the Heisenberg hat to return to normal
this is a good point - just realized now how it's such a contrast to the full head of a hair he has in the flash forwards, as we've gotten used to the hat symbolizing Heisenberg

Nhex, Monday, 9 September 2013 14:37 (twelve years ago)

xpost although they still wouldn't have proof. But he realizes that he lead them to the money.

dan selzer, Monday, 9 September 2013 14:37 (twelve years ago)

I know but you'd think Germans would look at this guy's uh CV since 2008 and realize he's more trouble than he's worth.

really cool behind-the-scenes clip about the making of the shootout scene (no spoilers that i can tell)

in terms of just straight up technical direction, this sequence was completely flawless
