i mean that 'honoring' is pretty innocuous. every human being should be honored. maybe it's silly if you assume that it should be a given that all woman should be honored (and therefore there's no need to say it), but clearly that's not the case.

like honoring someone doesn't necessarily mean opening the door for them or some bullshit chivalry. when i was a teenager i got a lecture about honoring woman vis-a-vis treating them w/ respect and never doing anything that would make them uncomfortable. honoring someone can just mean things like decency + respect.

"honoring" is kind of a weasel-word phrase assuming that there are set things you do to honor women, and it has a lot to do with prescriptive gender roles

were you ever given a lecture about honoring fellow men? the idea that you need to be taught to "honor women" is based in an idea that you're already treating women differently than men, and this is the right way to treat them differently.

'honor thy mother + father' = respect them, follow their wishes, etc. it doesn't mean acting like some don juan door-holding, seat pulling, jacket down in a puddle, 50's stereotype douchebag

fair points mordy but i'm just reading a pretty familiar narrative in(to) this: "men used to be more manly, but then modernity happened! oh no! let's reclaim our manhood. but how?.... let's save the princess!"

yes, but when i was an adolescent some boys in my school started snapping girls' bras and there had to be a special lecture given to the class about honoring the girls in the class. none of the boys were snapping the other boys' dicks or whatever.

andrew, dawg, there is a big difference between "loving-kindness" and "unending adoration".

honoring your mother and father is partially about respecting a special role they hold, though, right? having it stated outside of respect of elders means you're putting them in a special position outside of others.

i don't think the ways that teenage boys behave with each other should be a model for how they should behave towards women in their lives

none of the boys were snapping the other boys' dicks or whatever.

if honor thy fellow man got the job done, i'd agree that we don't need special lessons about honoring women. but clearly it has not gotten the job done to date so maybe some special specific reminders are in order.

I think you're doing an end-run around the fact that merely respecting others and "honoring" are different things

As a long time speaker of english, I'd say that 'honoring' someone requires granting them special distinction that sets them apart from others, while 'respecting' someone entails seeing their individual merits without regard to the merits of others.

i think you're trying to link 'honor' to 'venerate' in a way that isn't necessarily implied, 'respect' and 'honor' can be synonyms too such as in the idiom 'honor my wishes.'
