FIERCE GENTLEMAN MANIFESTO: 21 Points

We seek first to heal our own wounds, and do our own work.
We seek, men and women, to find our way back to each other.
We seek to build a world that works for everybody.
We dare greatly in pursuit of our vision.
We renounce status-seeking in favor of a purpose-driven life.
We surrender emotional control in favor of emotional maturity.
We exchange competence in violence for competence in non-violence.
We give up divided attention so that we may practice Presence.
We seek liberation from the ego.
We refuse to bow to fear of economic scarcity.
Women are not the source of our problems.
We live chivalrous lives, with unending adoration for women, our co-creators of the world.
There is no “Other” that we demonize.
We take personal responsibility for the state of the world.
We understand at last what true Wealth is, and where it comes from.
Morality is our daily habit: we exercise generosity, maintain strong determination, make diligent and sustained effort, give selfless Love, tell the truth in all cases and all ways, discipline ourselves, show tolerance, seek wisdom, practice renunciation, and cultivate equanimity.
We play our real edge.
We address the biggest problems we are capable of solving.
We refuse to turn against our Brothers.
We stand undefended against the world.
We are for the integrity of the interconnected individual who, listening to the wisdom of their hearts, finds the courage to act.

You’ve found the Internet epicenter of the global Fierce Gentlemen movement; we are men on our mission, facing our demons, adoring & honoring women, & saving the world.

I’m Andrew, the writer in residence. My goal for FG.com is that it become like Miracle-Gro for the modern man.

In exploring themes in modern masculinity (& femininity) in writing, I focus specifically on the applicability of Buddhism to modern life, practical neuroscience, research in change psychology, and the power of meditation, compassion, loving-kindness, and forgiveness in building lasting relationship harmony.

What about me? I’m a life-long learner, who frequently finds himself awed by nature.

I was hoping the writer in residence would be named Sasha

I don't normally like ask rhetorical questions beginning with "What kind of man...", but what kind of man, but what kind of man needs these manliness blogs?

#fomo that's the motto (Hurting 2), Monday, 16 September 2013 17:31 (twelve years ago)

people with a taste for hot gender-essentialist garbage who think of womenfolk as a different creature altogether

your authentic guitar playing self (elmo argonaut), Monday, 16 September 2013 17:36 (twelve years ago)

that manifesto is like 1 part right on to 99 parts sounding like a guy reading a crumpled piece of paper before he detonates himself in a bank lobby

goole, Monday, 16 September 2013 17:50 (twelve years ago)

That FIERCE manifesto has one or two nice moments early on, but it rapidly descends into hopeless mental slush.

Aimless, Monday, 16 September 2013 18:00 (twelve years ago)

And wtf is "honoring women" that shit sounds so creepy. Don't come anywhere near my daughter with that honoring crap.

#fomo that's the motto (Hurting 2), Monday, 16 September 2013 18:10 (twelve years ago)

pretty sure you're losing the thread if you're complaining about 'honoring women'

mordy dudes strenuously and hilariously "honoring women" is pretty in line with the rest of this thread tbh

but if you mean "chivalry" isn't worth criticism or scorn then we can certainly have that conversation itt again

your authentic guitar playing self (elmo argonaut), Monday, 16 September 2013 18:22 (twelve years ago)

i open doors for women
IS THAT SO WRONG

One burly voice screamed and that was one of many. (forksclovetofu), Monday, 16 September 2013 18:23 (twelve years ago)

I open doors for people regardless of their gender if they're not far behind me. I might even wait a while if they're carrying something heavy.

this, ty

#fomo that's the motto (Hurting 2), Monday, 16 September 2013 18:28 (twelve years ago)

i mean that 'honoring' is pretty innocuous. every human being should be honored. maybe it's silly if you assume that it should be a given that all woman should be honored (and therefore there's no need to say it), but clearly that's not the case.

Mordy , Monday, 16 September 2013 18:28 (twelve years ago)

like honoring someone doesn't necessarily mean opening the door for them or some bullshit chivalry. when i was a teenager i got a lecture about honoring woman vis-a-vis treating them w/ respect and never doing anything that would make them uncomfortable. honoring someone can just mean things like decency + respect.

Mordy , Monday, 16 September 2013 18:29 (twelve years ago)

"honoring" is kind of a weasel-word phrase assuming that there are set things you do to honor women, and it has a lot to do with prescriptive gender roles

beautifully, unapologetically plastic (mh), Monday, 16 September 2013 18:30 (twelve years ago)

modern masculinity (& femininity)

#fomo that's the motto (Hurting 2), Monday, 16 September 2013 18:30 (twelve years ago)

i wanna hold you in parentheses

#fomo that's the motto (Hurting 2), Monday, 16 September 2013 18:30 (twelve years ago)

were you ever given a lecture about honoring fellow men? the idea that you need to be taught to "honor women" is based in an idea that you're already treating women differently than men, and this is the right way to treat them differently.

beautifully, unapologetically plastic (mh), Monday, 16 September 2013 18:30 (twelve years ago)

'honor thy mother + father' = respect them, follow their wishes, etc. it doesn't mean acting like some don juan door-holding, seat pulling, jacket down in a puddle, 50's stereotype douchebag

Mordy , Monday, 16 September 2013 18:31 (twelve years ago)

fair points mordy but i'm just reading a pretty familiar narrative in(to) this: "men used to be more manly, but then modernity happened! oh no! let's reclaim our manhood. but how?.... let's save the princess!"

your authentic guitar playing self (elmo argonaut), Monday, 16 September 2013 18:32 (twelve years ago)

yes, but when i was an adolescent some boys in my school started snapping girls' bras and there had to be a special lecture given to the class about honoring the girls in the class. none of the boys were snapping the other boys' dicks or whatever.

Mordy , Monday, 16 September 2013 18:32 (twelve years ago)

xxp

Mordy , Monday, 16 September 2013 18:32 (twelve years ago)

andrew, dawg, there is a big difference between "loving-kindness" and "unending adoration".

Aimless, Monday, 16 September 2013 18:32 (twelve years ago)

honoring your mother and father is partially about respecting a special role they hold, though, right? having it stated outside of respect of elders means you're putting them in a special position outside of others.

beautifully, unapologetically plastic (mh), Monday, 16 September 2013 18:34 (twelve years ago)

i don't think the ways that teenage boys behave with each other should be a model for how they should behave towards women in their lives

Mordy , Monday, 16 September 2013 18:35 (twelve years ago)

none of the boys were snapping the other boys' dicks or whatever.

we've successfully detoured into nightmare

WHAT DOES SAMANTHA FOX SAY (DJP), Monday, 16 September 2013 18:36 (twelve years ago)

if honor thy fellow man got the job done, i'd agree that we don't need special lessons about honoring women. but clearly it has not gotten the job done to date so maybe some special specific reminders are in order.

Mordy , Monday, 16 September 2013 18:37 (twelve years ago)

I think you're doing an end-run around the fact that merely respecting others and "honoring" are different things

beautifully, unapologetically plastic (mh), Monday, 16 September 2013 18:38 (twelve years ago)

xp
As a long time speaker of english, I'd say that 'honoring' someone requires granting them special distinction that sets them apart from others, while 'respecting' someone entails seeing their individual merits without regard to the merits of others.

Aimless, Monday, 16 September 2013 18:39 (twelve years ago)

i think you're trying to link 'honor' to 'venerate' in a way that isn't necessarily implied, 'respect' and 'honor' can be synonyms too such as in the idiom 'honor my wishes.'
