Before you say that this would be "demeaning" and ruin their "self esteem," consider that it wasn't that long ago that taking someone else's money for doing absolutely nothing was demeaning and lowered self esteem.

PRISON WARDEN CONSCIOUSNESS (4th Dimension) (Viceroy), Thursday, 5 September 2013 19:19 (twelve years ago)

Amazing facts #3: between October 2008 and October 2009, approximately 8 million lazy, shiftless, good-for-nothing Americans suddenly decided they didn't want to work for a living any more and decided to live off govenment handouts instead, bcz... free Ho-Hos!!

Aimless, Thursday, 5 September 2013 19:21 (twelve years ago)

Presumably the government handouts thing excludes politicians, CEO's & board members of corporations that get mad subsidies, etc.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 5 September 2013 19:23 (twelve years ago)

Though having Lloyd Blankfein live in a barracks and have to keep a list of all his possessions and clean up trash on the roadside does sound good.

One thing I agree with is that we shouldn't be paying for other people's mistakes. By all means, hand a bill for mass unemployment, loan defaults, and economic recession directly to the financial institutions that torpedoed the economy in the first place.

I appreciate the thoughts in this post (and do agree!) but I find it a bit funny & thought-provoking that you decided to illustrate this post with pictures of your boys (?) in their swim suits. They are good-looking young guys and of course that is perfectly normal and acceptable for them to be in their swim trunks, but couldn’t a young teenage girl looking at that with friends be led to talk about them looking “hot” or whatever if they were popping up in their instagram account? (My oldest is an almost 10 year old girl who has no interest in boys, so not too sure yet how teen girls think!) I really want to know if this could be an issue for some girls (or guys) or not really.

Treeship, Thursday, 5 September 2013 21:34 (twelve years ago)

If you are friends with a Hall boy on Facebook or Instagram or Twitter, then you are friends with the whole Hall family.

And now – big bummer – we have to block your posts. Because, the reason we have these (sometimes awkward) family conversations around the table is that we care about our sons, just as we know your parents care about you.

The slut shaming and sexual politics were off the charts, but these were the sentences that stood out as creepiest.
I know things have changed since I was in high school but if my parents had insisted on this level of intrusion into my private life I would have gone insane.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Thursday, 5 September 2013 21:45 (twelve years ago)

it funny cause compared to the porn yr sons are watching online these facebook pics dont really sound like bannable offenses

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 5 September 2013 22:19 (twelve years ago)

Devil's advocate, if I had teenage kids, would I not end up worrying about 'those types of girls/boys' or 'that type of behaviour', even though, as we all know, that type of behaviour is normal + we've all done it or a version of it?

What I mean is, the pressure and stress of running a family and keeping it together might lead one to several dodgy conclusions and if you then happened to be the one dodgy-conclusion-haver who blogged these conclusions you might look more mad than you actually are.

cardamon, Thursday, 5 September 2013 22:28 (twelve years ago)

For normal read 'harmless'. People putting slightly sexy facebook pictures up is no big deal, is it?

cardamon, Thursday, 5 September 2013 22:28 (twelve years ago)

i don't think i would pathologize teenage flirtiness like this woman does, no

Treeship, Thursday, 5 September 2013 22:35 (twelve years ago)

also, the main premise of her post is something like "if boys see you as sexy they won't see you as a human being as well because these things are incompatible. worry about what boys think of you." that has to do with sexism not with over-protectiveness, i think

I'm sorry ma'am, but I am a teenage girl and my parents do not care about me. Your son has been a positive influence in my life and I am starting to learn self-confidence through conversations with him, but no you've cut me off. You seem like you could have been a role model, but now I will never meet you.
