"where did you guys get all your Indian jokes from, 1995? there are more Indians starring in sitcoms then there are working at 7-11's"
― frogbs, Tuesday, 3 September 2013 16:15 (ten years ago) link
“So many gay jokes tonight about Franco. Apparently if you’re clean, well-dressed and mildly cultured, you’re super-gay now. Is that why the rest of you guys are so aggressively fat and dirty? You think if you read one book and take a shower, dicks are going to just fly into your face.”
(or you know, if you play Hart Crane, Allen Ginsberg and Harvey Milk's bf in a short period of time, make a film about the lost [sic] Cruising fisting footage and another one composed of River Phoenix outtakes, and are constantly making pronouncements about all the gay guys you love, people are going to make gay jokes.)

Also, if you're gay and in the closet, that too will bring the joeks.

channelling Norm MacDonald there, doing a good job
dvr'd it, gonna watch tonight

Likewise, though I'd be a bit more pumped for this had the lineup included more actual comedians and less Apatow regulars.

agreed samberg was killing it
it seems like itd kinda be hard to legitimately roast franco in a way that would suit a comedy central audience though? idk, like ripping on him for being a shitty poet or whatever isnt really gonna bring the mainstream lols. caveat: i have not seen the whole roast
― 1 P.3. Eternal (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 3 September 2013 23:36 (ten years ago) link
Samberg bit up there is um, conceptual, if that's what makes yer sides ache.
― Miss Arlington twirls for the Coal Heavers (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 4 September 2013 00:14 (ten years ago) link
didn't love it
roasting > meta-roasting imo
― #fomo that's the motto (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 4 September 2013 00:32 (ten years ago) link
i agree that its not in the spirit of a roast but this partic roast was so off base and un-roast-y that it worked for me as a send up of the whole exercise
― 1 P.3. Eternal (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 4 September 2013 00:57 (ten years ago) link
I did like "Is there a barista in here, cause this roast just got DARK"
― #fomo that's the motto (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 4 September 2013 00:59 (ten years ago) link
can i just: franco's labored rape joke
― 1 P.3. Eternal (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 4 September 2013 01:03 (ten years ago) link
these comedy central roasts are so labored and terrible that sambergs bit works really well imo
― max, Wednesday, 4 September 2013 01:43 (ten years ago) link
i don't even like Norm MacDonald, but his 'ironic bombing' was better a few years ago.
The Chevy Chase & Shatner roasts were funny!

here's the mcdonald bit. without the video of him reading off cards its not quite as excellent tho:

Sarah Silverman ("I've been a supporter of Aziz Ansari for years...and for only the price of one cup of coffee per day") and Natasha Leggero ("Jonah Hill was born and raised in Hollywood, and you can tell – he's a name-dropper with big tits and an eating disorder") fared the best, I thought. Aziz Ansari's point about the presence of Indians on TV was spot on, but he's just not very funny. And fuck Andy Samberg.

I have tried to watch a few roasts over the years but I always end up watching quietly for 20 min & then changing the channel
i actually laughed most of the way through this one, so idk if it was great or roasts are generally boiled anus & the bar is super low

― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 4 September 2013 04:28 (ten years ago) link
Hader was pretty funny, yes. A much better "conceptual" bit than the one by his asshole ex-castmate.
― the vineyards where the grapes of corporate rock are stored (cryptosicko), Wednesday, 4 September 2013 11:15 (ten years ago) link
ya i thought hader was great; this was overall p good, much better than most roasts
― johnny crunch, Wednesday, 4 September 2013 11:36 (ten years ago) link
that Norm clip isn't nearly as good without actual video. both that and Samberg's have to be taken in context, they're a lot funnier when they come after 6-7 dudes just trying to be as mean and vulgar as possible. I thought Samberg's was funny because his jokes pretty much all wound up making fun of himself, IMO a bit different than what Norm did
― frogbs, Wednesday, 4 September 2013 13:20 (ten years ago) link

I wonder if the other comedians were too scared to go hard at Ross in case he gave them the Jonah Hill treatment. Which would have made it better, I think.
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 5 September 2013 17:25 (ten years ago) link
Jeff Ross is a clown but at least he can tell a joke. I dunno for me these roasts only work when they're truly merciless, and these guys aren't cut out for it, they kept apologizing and giggling. Sarah Silverman and was pretty funny, and Natasha Leggero's dick in a box joke re: Lorne Michaels's open-casket funeral was pretty ace. But I would take eight Gilbert Gottfried's over the rest of the panel.
Also was nobody weirded out by Franco's "sign off"? Ugh.

Dunno if this was intended as a compliment, a diss or just an observation, but yes. Jonah Hill used it as a slam against him that Ross is probably only suited to do just this one thing, but I always like his appearances on these things. His joke about Franco at the Oscars being "a worse host than the AIDS monkey" was one of the evening's best.
Agreed, though, that this needed Gilbert Gottfried. But that's true of every roast.
― the vineyards where the grapes of corporate rock are stored (cryptosicko), Thursday, 5 September 2013 20:56 (ten years ago) link
no, Ross makes my skin crawl sometimes, but his approach is much more in keeping with the trad Friars Club roasts, where this format originated.

― what's up ugly girls? (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 5 September 2013 21:07 (ten years ago) link

but he's acceptably good at his one comedy job ie roasting ppl so

context prob helped for sure
