Just saw a shorter version of this video on the TV and felt physically ill. Totally ruined my enjoyment of the episode of Murder, She Wrote I was watching.

think because of all the private companies that pretend to be the consumer's bezzie mate, banks are right up there in the taking-the-fucking-piss stakes

― Merdeyeux, Monday, 10 February 2014 18:20 (ten years ago) link
That's the one that drives me insane. It is totally nonsensical, as in I just can't imagine anyone acting or thinking like this.
One accepts a meal from a new friend (the first time they'd gone out), just because your their friend? It felt 'briwyyent', surely you would be grateful, or perhaps a bit weirded out? This moment compared exactly to the feeling you got when found out about the cashback offer with your bank. That you feel confident that your new friend would like this offer.. (do people discuss this crap with new friends?)
.. this and that every time I watch anything on 4OD it plays at least four times..
― mmmm, Monday, 10 February 2014 18:51 (ten years ago) link
'you're their friend'
I have been reading too much into this haven't I?
― mmmm, Monday, 10 February 2014 18:52 (ten years ago) link
as somebody observed on ILX - and no doubt elsewhere - months ago, the more reprehensibly the banks behave, the cuddly wuddlier the adverts get

The woman is so clearly a simpleton, because that's what banks think of the general public.

this new coke zero ad makes me despair for maths teachers everywhere:
A new Coca-Cola Zero campaign, launched this month during the Australian Open Men's tennis final via Host, turns the idea that 0 means nothing on its head.
Says Lucie Austin, marketing director, Coca-Cola South Pacific: "For some people 0 means nothing, our campaign will show that adding 0 gives you more; 1 idea to 10 ideas, 10 mates to 100 mates, 100 possibilities to 1000 possibilities.
Television is epic in scale and we're taking this reappraisal of what 0 means to the masses. Coke Zero is a modern cola icon, which warrants an edgier and sexier campaign, above and beyond its established 'zero sugar' positioning.
i guess 'add zero and get exactly what you started with' doesn't have the same ring?

― And when you f--- up, you go backwards (snoball), Tuesday, 11 February 2014 09:28 (ten years ago) link
Agh during my degree I undertook some teaching discourse analysis and this exact description of 'adding zero' was determined to be particularly confusing to young maths students. Why didn't they go with the actually interesting 'discovery' of zero?

That Werther's Original ad where the narrator recalls the time she visited her 'favourite caramel shop' makes me feel irrationally embarrassed. For one, I don't think I've ever heard of a caramel shop, let alone visited enough to have a favourite one. I don't think I've even met anyone who likes caramel enough to get even remotely excited about visiting a 'caramel shop'. What's more, if I were to ever visit such a theoretical Wonka factory, bedecked in sparkling gold and where kindly old gentlemen inspect each batch with a jeweller's eye, I'd be pretty fucking annoyed if one of them were to hand me a Werther's bloody Original.
― 1 pONO 3v3Ry+h1n G!!!1 (dog latin), Monday, 12 May 2014 09:33 (ten years ago) link
Just tried googling 'caramel shop' and all the links were either to Werther's Originals or to people making the same complaints as you on other forums.
― Turtleneck Work Solutions (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Monday, 12 May 2014 12:40 (ten years ago) link
Though I suppose those people could actually just be you using a variety of internet aliases and taking your complaint to as many places as possible.
― Turtleneck Work Solutions (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Monday, 12 May 2014 12:45 (ten years ago) link
Hah, I guess what annoys me most about the whole Werthers aesthetic are manifold:
- They've always been slightly creepy - They try and generate a false sense of nostalgia which doesn't exist - the company has existed in some shape or form in Germany since 1903 but the brand 'Werther's Original' only went global in the 1990s, so it's bullshit basically. - They're not even real caramels, they're boiled sweets with caramel flavourings, so it's bullshit basically. - Just, just the horribleness of those ads - what's the opposite of a strawman? where someone creates a benefit on the basis of a false assumption (i.e. I'm obsessed with nasty hard caramel flavoured sweets).
