christine always seemed to be in the midst of some type of financial and/or family crisis, i remember her talking about trying to move? maybe that happened? maybe she got out from under her situation, maybe not. i don't remember her contributions being of much interest to me, but i would hope she's well. fwiw i don't think she would have been even slightly embarrassed by the mcd's wifi line but *shrug*

I've always pronounced "Louis" as "Louie", I had no idea you could pronounce it as "Lewis"! Do you guys also pronounce Satchmo as "Lewis Armstrong"?
― Tuomas, Friday, 30 August 2013 14:20 (twelve years ago)
some people do

Louis Armstrong's first name is French, c'mon. Of course it's Louie.
But walk up to the Nation of Islam leader and say what's up Louie? and see how long it takes you to get taken back out to the sidewalk.
And unless you're Judy Garland, you'd better say St. Louis with a hard 's'.
― pplains, Friday, 30 August 2013 14:30 (twelve years ago)
St's pronounced 'san' though

"car," right? I lived in North Carolina where that's a common last name, and only one letter different from my last name, so I was known as Jesse "car."
― potatoes-in-law (Je55e), Friday, 30 August 2013 15:06 (twelve years ago)
I hear "Louis" as "loo ee" in my head, but I was embarrassed to find out I'd been pronouncing the name of the street in the French Quarter of NOLA wrong - it's Saint "Lewis," not "loo ee."
I should have fucking known, given that the Rue Chartres = "Charters" and Calliope Street = ... well, you can probably guess how that one is pronounced.

From the Louis Armstrong House FAQ page:
Judging from home recorded tapes now in our Museum Collections, Louis pronounced his own name as “Lewis.” On his 1964 record “Hello, Dolly,” he sings, “This is Lewis, Dolly” but in 1933 he made a record called “Laughin’ Louie.” Many broadcast announcers, fans, and acquaintances called him “Louie” and in a videotaped interview from 1983 Lucille Armstrong calls her late husband “Louie” as well. Musicians and close friends usually called him “Pops.”
