Seems...kind of creepy to me.

Like obv police depts target certain families all the time, but overtly and institutionally doing it sounds very much not ok.

I don't really know how I feel about this tbh. Like, if you run the statistics and there is a high correlation between violent crime and a small, specific number of families, it seems like common sense to focus your preventative efforts on them; particularly since this is how they're being targeted:

Samuels said as mayor he would personally visit each of these families with an offer from the city to provide these families with the best early childhood and K-12 education, tutoring, mentoring, counseling, job training, summer camps and anything else they need.

I mean, I get that failure means severe repercussions and there's a whole other conversation about setting ppl up to fail so that you can punish them like you wanted to in the first place, but OTOH offer my family the best early childhood and K-12 education muthafukka because that's an amazing deal.

interesting that he wants to do this carrot-stick stuff out in the open, rather just some hush-hush file in the MPD. the open acknowledgement is novel, maybe? i really wonder what kind of stick he can legally propose. 'take the preschool deal or...' what?

i dunno what it reminds me of. italian city-state craziness on one hand, counter-insurgency on the other

reactionary/cynical take is that this is as much a solicitation for support FROM the Six Families as it is a promise to everyone else that he'll curb their activity. like, they're so influential criminally, they're prob worth a bunch of votes too?

i guess it's weird that the thing is presented in such a credulous style....like who are these six families? what proof do you have that they are responsible for all this violent crime etc?

I am guessing he got the info from publicly accessible arrest records

And then analyzed every violent crime arrest over a several year period and the traced back those accused through other public records to figure out who was related to what large extended family, and then sorted those crimes out from the whole and ran percentages?

when we had this problem in limerick city they just created a special criminal court and changed the law and everyone was happy iirc

i can see the logic of preferring your guns to the right to vote, it's less about a 'frontier' mentality than trying to keep the ultimate source of all power -- force -- in private, trusted hands, while remaining skeptical of ultimately metaphyisical claims of state legitimacy conferred merely by a show of hands.
