if something happens to walt's kids, might drive jesse over the edge--?
― dow, Monday, 26 August 2013 18:18 (twelve years ago)
the only thing the show fudges w/the ricin is, as pplains noted, how walt got the kid to eat the lily of the valley. otherwise its no more ridiculous than walt bombing a nursing home and not being caught on camera/no one noticing him scurrying away from the scene. and its not that big a leap for jesse because hes already suspicious of walt and already suspected that he did this - the groundwork's been laid
― i wanna be a gabbneb baby (Hungry4Ass), Monday, 26 August 2013 18:18 (twelve years ago)
cant really judge an ep as a mini-movie, self-contained, no matter how stupid a plot point may seem for a while, just wait for the total effect.
― dow, Monday, 26 August 2013 18:20 (twelve years ago)
walt planted the bomb -- with hector's connivance -- way before it went off. hector was the one who triggered it. i don't see how that's a loose end

― pplains, Monday, 26 August 2013 18:22 (twelve years ago)
The thing was that Walt was trying to gaslight Jesse and make him think that he wasn't in control. It wasn't until the end of the whole scheme that he really believed that he'd fucked up, and now he has reason to believe he didn't lose the ricin and that he was fucked with -- imo it was really hard to get Jesse to believe the whole thing to begin with.
― mh, Monday, 26 August 2013 18:24 (twelve years ago)
jesse not knowing walt is an almost child killer was the loose end
― "Max's Original Starship" Vol. 3 (sunny successor), Monday, 26 August 2013 18:24 (twelve years ago)
lol pplains
I suppose it maybe wasn't a great idea predicating a crucial plot point on the viewers all being wastemen like me who had enough free time to have re-watch everything in the past couple of months and so kinda remember that whole tangled end to season 4.
Todd chatting about his action movie train scene like an excited kid while omitting one crucial detail was creepy as fuck.

does marie wear shoulder pads?

The status quo between Walt and Jesse has switched between "you're manipulating me" to "oh man, you saved my ass, I am sorry I thought that" so many times that Jesse figuring out that Walt has been mostly faking the saves through manipulation has been a long time coming. I think he's known it's the case, but wasn't ready to admit it until Mike "disappeared."
― mh, Monday, 26 August 2013 18:30 (twelve years ago)
I wonder what Skyler was thinking while Walt was taping it though -- it had to be realization of even newer lower depths of his badness
Yeah, this was crazy. How can you ever live with, work with, or trust someone again when you've seen them film something like that. Once you've seen how easy it is for them, how good they are at lying about being concerned about your (and your children's) death?
― army surplus newspapers (dowd), Monday, 26 August 2013 18:32 (twelve years ago)
not being caught on camera/no one noticing him scurrying away from the scene
theres an old lady that sez 'hi, hello' that sees him out her window right. i think is my fav moment of this entire series
― johnny crunch, Monday, 26 August 2013 18:35 (twelve years ago)
Walt's resolve and scope for his whole enterprise got a lot larger when he was confronted with his ex-business partner & wife -- he felt like he should have had the business and lifestyle they had, and has had that chip on his shoulder motivating part of his empire-building. Who's to say that Skyler doesn't have her own chip on her shoulder about Marie?
― mh, Monday, 26 August 2013 18:36 (twelve years ago)
btw I sure would, because at the beginning of the series Skyler is supposed to be all domestic and Marie obviously thinks herself more fashionable/worldly
― mh, Monday, 26 August 2013 18:37 (twelve years ago)
Pretty sure Skyler was already well aware of Walt's capacity for lying, but in any case she's in way too deep to do anything else at this point. She's one of the few characters that Walt has no real reason to turn on at this stage.
― Matt DC, Monday, 26 August 2013 18:38 (twelve years ago)
that's what I figure. Lydia asked nicely and got turned down, now Todd's uncle is going to come through saying he won't take no for an answer.

^^^ this, plus Walt will see this as a way to get Hank off his back. "Bust the Nazis, you look like a hero for finally bringing down the meth operation (make sure all the perps die so they can't contradict you), let me die in peace, nobody knows about your rehab money, my kids are provided for." I can see Hank going for this, now that Walt has the squeeze on his balls via the video.
― cops on horse (WilliamC), Monday, 26 August 2013 18:38 (twelve years ago)
hmm yeah that makes sense

it has to come out p publicly that walts heisenberg cuz y else would his neighbor drop her groceries
― johnny crunch, Monday, 26 August 2013 18:43 (twelve years ago)
i don't think that video is actual leverage over hank, i mean there's no evidence for it whatsoever, it's just walt taunting hank & (inadvertently?) revealing the rehab financing
― awake the snorting citizens (discreet), Monday, 26 August 2013 18:44 (twelve years ago)
no evidence for hank being a meth king i mean, that wouldn't stand up under even the slightest investigation
Do they need any evidence other than all things pointing to Walt and him pointing to Hank? Not to mention Hank's monetary gain.
― mh, Monday, 26 August 2013 18:47 (twelve years ago)
no evidence for walt either. and that's the point - it's one's word against another, and each can implicate the other pretty thoroughly.
xp
― what's up ugly girls? (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 26 August 2013 18:47 (twelve years ago)
yeah walt's story may be patchy as fuck but it forces Hank to explain a lot of shit than the DEA won't want to help him with.
― da croupier, Monday, 26 August 2013 18:48 (twelve years ago)
hank was already timid about the "why didn't I know earlier?" thing before Walt revealed how HE'D answer that question
― da croupier, Monday, 26 August 2013 18:49 (twelve years ago)
Which makes more sense, high school chemistry teacher decides to get into meth, or corrupt DEA agent sees a way to use his connections to be an illicit drug kingpin?
― mh, Monday, 26 August 2013 18:50 (twelve years ago)
^^^
― what's up ugly girls? (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 26 August 2013 18:51 (twelve years ago)
the Fring thing and the $$$ look very, very bad
these are just stories you guys, no one's being prosecuted without testimony & evidence, which there is none of on hank's end. his career is over regardless, as he & walt both know
― awake the snorting citizens (discreet), Monday, 26 August 2013 18:53 (twelve years ago)
shakey the only money connecting hank to the meth trade is the money walt spent on his rehab, it looks shitty but doesn't prove hank is a meth kingpin
― awake the snorting citizens (discreet), Monday, 26 August 2013 18:56 (twelve years ago)
walt tells hank he can't arrest him because it would destroy the family, hank and marie make clear they're willing to take the kids and watch skylar and walt burn. walt makes clear that he'd do his damndest to make sure hank wouldn't even have the kids, let alone his career. the video doesn't have to be an airtight totally unsurmountable threat, it just makes clear how smart and how nihilistic an opponent hank is dealing with.
― da croupier, Monday, 26 August 2013 18:58 (twelve years ago)
Why would Saul have Huell steal the weed from Jesse. Like if it was heroin I could understand but c'mon, dumb move. #legalizeit
― polyphonic, Monday, 26 August 2013 18:59 (twelve years ago)
Hmm Jesse has like 1/16th in his pocket, better steal it and save this poor man from the grip of a marijuana addiction.
― polyphonic, Monday, 26 August 2013 19:00 (twelve years ago)
xxp yea otm. i think it also shows (us, and maybe hank if hes perceptive enough) that walt is never truthfully admitting anything or cutting a deal or w/e
― johnny crunch, Monday, 26 August 2013 19:01 (twelve years ago)
xp because the new identity guy was super paranoid and would call off the whole thing if he smelled the weed

Solid policy for the identity fixer. You wouldn't want to go though all the trouble of creating a complete new identity for someone only to find out they smoking jazz cigarettes.

agree that Chekhov's Ricin is a weak link in the plot that disconcertingly seems to play an ever larger role. would be kinda neat though if it was never "fired," as it were. at the same time, hopefully there's a non-lame reason for Walt to go back for it.
