man dude you seriously have no clue what it's actually like, do you?
― combination hair (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Sunday, 25 August 2013 16:52 (twelve years ago)
i mean, i "get" the skylar hate but fucking sucks that people can't see how being "no fun"/drab/complacent/controlly/judgey pales to "i'm dying, guess i'll be a unethical martyr, oh wait, i'm alive, guess i'll be scarface" even if the average dude wishes his mid-life crisis would be so cool
― da croupier, Sunday, 25 August 2013 16:52 (twelve years ago)
or like that when it crosses over to the performer's real life it's kind of a whole different thing...?

"i'm sure it sucks to have people just show up at your fucking house but hey what's the big? exaggerated by the media imo" ― lag∞n

"internet psychos will be internet psychos and will never be real life psychos, so don't sweat it" is a weird stance to take unless your sympathy is with internet psychos
― da croupier, Sunday, 25 August 2013 16:54 (twelve years ago)
did some internet psycho go to her house
― lag∞n, Sunday, 25 August 2013 16:55 (twelve years ago)
while the music fan who posted my address (via white pages) on a message board after I dared to rib Big Star's Radio City never went further than that, i know another critic who had to get a restraining order so yeah maybe you're being a naive dick right now
― da croupier, Sunday, 25 August 2013 16:57 (twelve years ago)
but then again we wrote for webzines surely the star of one of the most popular cable dramas on tv has less to worry about
― da croupier, Sunday, 25 August 2013 16:58 (twelve years ago)
im not at all being naive im perfectly aware that people have even killed celebrities before, and if had any sort of public profile i would def be thinking abt ways to protect myself, that doesnt change the fact that the ratio of internet death threats to actual acts of violence is like a trillion to one
― lag∞n, Sunday, 25 August 2013 17:00 (twelve years ago)
ok you're just being a dick then
― da croupier, Sunday, 25 August 2013 17:01 (twelve years ago)
and its just often employed in a kind of unexamined manner

i think it's pretty clear that the skylar hate is a symptom of a larger cultural/national misogyny. on the other hand, i dont think the writers went out of their way to write her character in such a way as to directly challenge that misogyny. they seem in some ways trapped by the parameters of the narrative and the roles that the characters are forced to adopt by the logic of the story. she's a believable and sympathetic character, but she's not a directly challenging feminist archetype either.
are the writers obligated to write her character that way? are they obligated to write her character in response to the gross and retrograde response she invokes? i really dont know, but im inclined to say they aren't.
― ryan, Sunday, 25 August 2013 17:06 (twelve years ago)
lagoon, i know you're upset that people aren't being cynical about the violent threats they get online but that's no reason to say "i know you are but what am i"
― da croupier, Sunday, 25 August 2013 17:07 (twelve years ago)
it is
― lag∞n, Sunday, 25 August 2013 17:07 (twelve years ago)
fwiw you could def easily place the way skylar is written in w a long tradition of humorless shrews, so its not surprising that a lot of the responses have been so ugly-y misogynistic, i dont know if the writing itself is overtly sexist but it def easily jibes w a lot of sexist stuff
― lag∞n, Sunday, 25 August 2013 17:14 (twelve years ago)
tho what really prob animates the level of vitriol is that the show is so good
― lag∞n, Sunday, 25 August 2013 17:15 (twelve years ago)
i def disagree w anna gunns description of skylar as strong
― lag∞n, Sunday, 25 August 2013 17:16 (twelve years ago)
you know you just followed "sexist trolls are harmless" with "besides the show was asking for it"
― da croupier, Sunday, 25 August 2013 17:19 (twelve years ago)
no come on
― lag∞n, Sunday, 25 August 2013 17:20 (twelve years ago)
anyway good drama is usually pretty problematic and yes the internet should prob be shot into the sun
― lag∞n, Sunday, 25 August 2013 17:21 (twelve years ago)
"look at the way they've got her all self-righteous, boring and bourgeois, what did they expect"
― da croupier, Sunday, 25 August 2013 17:21 (twelve years ago)
i dont think sexist trolls are harmless i just think death threats are often trotted out in a conviently decontextualized manner
― lag∞n, Sunday, 25 August 2013 17:22 (twelve years ago)
now there's a slate pitch
― da croupier, Sunday, 25 August 2013 17:23 (twelve years ago)
i mean there are so many people saying things on the internet and many of them are horrible, this is the new normal, which is not to say it doesnt matter, just that it requires a little understanding

if youre going to examine the fans misogyny its seems like it might be worthwhile to ask if the show itself isnt also a lil mysoginsitic
― lag∞n, Sunday, 25 August 2013 17:26 (twelve years ago)
So basically people are horrible on the internet which is really the issue here not any animus directed against Skylar or Anna Gunn?
― One bad call from barely losing to (Alex in SF), Sunday, 25 August 2013 17:27 (twelve years ago)
Well done for 'contextualising' the death threats an actress received better than she could!
― kinder, Sunday, 25 August 2013 17:27 (twelve years ago)
seriously, lagoon, slate would be down for an "anna gunn doesn't get online death threats/how much the show asks for a misogynistic reaction" piece. you gotta write this up.
― da croupier, Sunday, 25 August 2013 17:27 (twelve years ago)
now you are totally willfully mischaracterizing what im saying and im going to kill u
― lag∞n, Sunday, 25 August 2013 17:28 (twelve years ago)
xxxp I don't think it's terribly worthwhile asking that when the response is so clearly well beyond anything the show has done consciously or not.

anyone in the world couldve received death threats fwiw afaik
― lag∞n, Sunday, 25 August 2013 17:32 (twelve years ago)
'if the troll is putting a defensive "fwiw" in front of their challops, you can assume relative harmlessness, a lack of hostility.' put that in the slate piece.
― da croupier, Sunday, 25 August 2013 17:34 (twelve years ago)
maybe you shd write the slate piece
― lag∞n, Sunday, 25 August 2013 17:35 (twelve years ago)
why? i don't want to defend sexist trolls
― da croupier, Sunday, 25 August 2013 17:36 (twelve years ago)
well im sure you could think up some other variety of trolling to defend
― lag∞n, Sunday, 25 August 2013 17:37 (twelve years ago)
i think my take on trolling would be more appropriate for the next season of dexter

btw i feel no shame for this delightful stand-off in the desert, better use of time than rating how hot the characters are imo
