im not at all being naive im perfectly aware that people have even killed celebrities before, and if had any sort of public profile i would def be thinking abt ways to protect myself, that doesnt change the fact that the ratio of internet death threats to actual acts of violence is like a trillion to one

i think it's pretty clear that the skylar hate is a symptom of a larger cultural/national misogyny. on the other hand, i dont think the writers went out of their way to write her character in such a way as to directly challenge that misogyny. they seem in some ways trapped by the parameters of the narrative and the roles that the characters are forced to adopt by the logic of the story. she's a believable and sympathetic character, but she's not a directly challenging feminist archetype either.

are the writers obligated to write her character that way? are they obligated to write her character in response to the gross and retrograde response she invokes? i really dont know, but im inclined to say they aren't.

lagoon, i know you're upset that people aren't being cynical about the violent threats they get online but that's no reason to say "i know you are but what am i"

fwiw you could def easily place the way skylar is written in w a long tradition of humorless shrews, so its not surprising that a lot of the responses have been so ugly-y misogynistic, i dont know if the writing itself is overtly sexist but it def easily jibes w a lot of sexist stuff
